Line memory, stretch and bite detection

Memory is line holding the shape of the spool and stretch is line absorbing movement, and both sit between the fish and the angler's hand deciding how much of a bite arrives.

Two properties of a line decide how much of what happens at the hook reaches the angler, and they are different properties with different causes.

MEMORY is the tendency of a line to hold the shape it has been stored in. Nylon and, to a lesser extent, fluorocarbon are viscoelastic: wound onto a spool under tension and left, they take a set, and the line comes off in coils. Those coils have to be pulled straight before any movement at the hook can travel up the line, so a memory-heavy line inserts a dead zone between the bite and the rod tip. Braid has effectively no memory, which is one of its real advantages.

STRETCH is elastic extension under load. Nylon extends substantially — enough that at long range a large proportion of a fish's movement is absorbed by the line before the tip moves. Fluorocarbon extends less. Braid extends very little.

The two combine into a single practical consequence: the further away the fish is and the more memory-heavy and stretchy the line, the more of the bite is lost before it arrives. At close range on a short line the difference is small. At a hundred metres in deep water it is the difference between registering a bite and not.

Stretch is not simply a defect, though, and that is the part usually left out. The same elasticity that hides a bite also cushions a hook hold, forgives a hard strike, and prevents a hook pulling when a fish lunges at the net.

What causes memory, and what reduces it

Memory increases with time on the spool, with tightness of winding, with heat, and with the tightness of the coil — which means small spools produce more of it than large ones for the same line.

Storage matters accordingly. Line left tightly wound on a small spool in a hot car for a winter arrives in the spring in a state no amount of casting will fix. Line stored loosely, cool and out of sunlight keeps far better.

Line can be relaxed by stretching it: casting a length out and retrieving under tension pulls the coils out, and many anglers do this deliberately at the start of a session. It is a temporary fix, and it is also the point at which the line's age becomes obvious.

Stiffer nylons hold more memory than supple ones, which is one of the reasons the same nominal breaking strain from two makers behaves so differently on the reel.

Choosing which problem to have

Where bite detection is the constraint — deep water, long range, subtle takes, feeder and drop-shot work — anglers overwhelmingly move to low-stretch braid and accept that the system has lost its cushion, then put the cushion back with a softer rod tip, a lower drag setting, or a length of nylon leader.

Where hook holds are the constraint — hard-mouthed fish at close quarters, snags, or lively fish on light hooks — the reverse choice is common, and the stretch is the point rather than a cost.

The mistakes that follow from ignoring both

Blaming missed bites on shy fish when the line is three seasons old and full of coils.

Moving to braid for detection and keeping a stiff rod and a tight drag, so that the whole system has no give anywhere and hook pulls replace missed bites.

Filling a spool too full, which increases both memory and the tendency of coils to jump off in loose loops.

Assuming stretch is constant. It is not: nylon that has been repeatedly loaded near its limit stretches further and recovers less, which is a sign that the line is finished rather than a property to work with.
