The long spiny dorsal and the sharp rear edge of the gill cover both cause cuts and punctures during handling.

Butterfly peacock bass is the peacock most anglers outside the Amazon have actually caught. It is smaller than the speckled peacock bass, marked with three distinct dark vertical bars along a golden-green flank and a black eyespot ringed with white at the base of the tail, and it has been introduced widely — most notably to south Florida, where it was stocked deliberately to control other introduced fish and now supports a substantial urban fishery.
Like all Cichla it is a daylight sight predator that hunts in warm clear water and strikes surface lures with genuine violence.
In its native range it shares water with the larger speckled peacock, and separating the two is a matter of counting bars and looking at the pattern rather than at size.

Lifecycle and reproduction
Fast-growing and warm-water dependent — it cannot survive sustained cold, which is what confines introduced populations to subtropical and tropical waters and limits its spread.
Pairs excavate a nest on hard substrate and both parents guard eggs and fry aggressively for weeks. That parental care is a large part of why introduced populations establish so effectively.
Feeding and senses
A daylight ambush and pursuit predator taking small fish, chasing prey in open water and around structure with considerable speed.
Hunts entirely by sight in warm clear water during daylight, which is why the fishing is a daytime proposition and why water clarity matters so much.
Through the year
Spawns and feeds through warm months; activity falls sharply as water cools, and cold snaps kill introduced populations at the edge of their tolerance.

Why anglers care
A prime tropical lure target in northern South America and a major introduced sport fish in south Florida and Hawaii, taken on topwater lures, jerkbaits and jigs. Its significance is that it delivers genuine tropical predator fishing in accessible urban and roadside waters, and in Florida it is one of the few introduced species deliberately managed as a sport fishery.

Butterfly peacock bass are handled under three constraints at once, and only one of them is about the animal's anatomy.
THE ANATOMY IS STRAIGHTFORWARD. A long spiny dorsal running most of the back and a sharp rear edge to the gill cover, both met by a hand closing over the fish. The fish thrashes hard. Grip across the body with the dorsal folded, or use a lip grip — the teeth are small and abrasive rather than cutting — and unhook with pliers.
THE HEAT IS THE FIRST REAL CONSTRAINT. This is a tropical and subtropical fish caught in warm water under a hot sun, and warm water holds less oxygen while a warm fish needs more. A peacock bass fights in short violent bursts that go deep into oxygen debt, and it then has to repay that debt in water poorly equipped to supply it. Air exposure in that situation is expensive in a way it is not in a cool river. Fish stay in the water, are photographed at the surface, and are held facing into flow until they leave under their own power.
THE PARENTAL BEHAVIOUR IS THE SECOND. Like every Cichla, this species guards its fry intensively and attacks intruders near the brood, which is a large part of why lure fishing works during the guarding period. A parent removed from a brood, even briefly, leaves the fry undefended in water that is full of things that eat fry. Immediate return, to the same place, is the minimum if such a fish is caught at all.
THE LEGAL POSITION IS THE THIRD AND IT VARIES SHARPLY. Butterfly peacock bass have been deliberately introduced to a number of waters outside their South American native range — in some cases as a managed sport fishery, in others as an unwanted invasion — and whether a fish should be returned depends entirely on which of those a given water is. In some places the fishery is stocked and protected with size limits; in others the species is a problem and returning it is inappropriate or unlawful. That is a local question with a local answer, and it is worth having before fishing rather than while holding a fish.
