A baited trap an animal enters and cannot leave. Simple, effective, and among the most tightly regulated things a recreational fisher can do — because a pot keeps working whether or not anybody comes back for it.
Safety
Line under tension — Can cause serious injury or death
Hauling gear puts a loaded rope under tension in a small boat, and a bight of that rope around a limb as a pot goes over the side, or as a boat moves, takes a person overboard with it. This is the mechanism behind a substantial share of deaths in the commercial potting fishery and the physics is the same in a recreational one.
What reduces it: Keep the rope flaked clear and never inside a coil of it. Never put a hand or foot through a bight. Carry a knife where it can be reached instantly, and shoot gear away from the body with the boat moving ahead rather than lifting it over.
Worse when:
- Working alone, when nobody can stop the boat or cut the rope.
- In any sea, where the boat's movement loads and unloads the rope unpredictably.
- With heavy strings of several pots, where the weight of gear already over the side is doing the pulling.
Drowning and immersion — Can cause serious injury or death
Recreational potting is frequently done alone, from a small boat, in the sort of hard-ground inshore water where pots are set — which is rocky, tidal and unforgiving. A person overboard from a small boat while hauling is often a person who cannot get back aboard.
What reduces it: Wear a lifejacket, tell somebody the plan and the return time, carry a means of calling for help on the person, and do not haul in conditions in which going overboard could not be recovered from.
Fish welfare — Can cause injury needing treatment
Pots that are not hauled continue to catch and kill indefinitely, and animals held through an over-long soak in a pot with no escape gaps starve, are cannibalised or are damaged before release.
What reduces it: Fit escape gaps and rot cord or biodegradable panels, haul on a schedule that will actually be kept, set no more gear than can reliably be retrieved, and go back for gear that has moved.
A pot is a baited enclosure with an entrance shaped so that an animal walking in cannot readily walk out. It is set on the bottom, marked by a buoy, left for a period, and hauled. Everything about it follows from the fact that it is a passive device: it works while nobody is watching, it works on animals that forage at night when nobody could watch, and it goes on working if it is lost.
THE QUARRY IS CRUSTACEAN, almost entirely — lobster, crab, crayfish, and in some fisheries prawns and whelks. The reason is behavioural. These animals locate food by scent over distance, walk to it along the bottom, and enter dark enclosed spaces without alarm because a dark enclosed space is where they live. A fish will not usually do the second and third of those, which is why pots take crustaceans and rarely take fish.
THE DESIGN IS A COMPROMISE BETWEEN CATCHING AND KEEPING. The entrance — the eye, or funnel — has to be large enough for the target animal and shaped so that the way back out is not obvious. Parlour pots add a second chamber the animal moves into and from which escape is harder still. Escape gaps sized to the local minimum landing size let undersized animals leave on their own, which is a conservation measure and in most jurisdictions a legal requirement rather than a courtesy.
THIS IS THE MOST REGULATED PRACTICE IN THIS CATALOGUE and it is worth being plain about why. A recreational potter can, with very modest equipment, exert real pressure on a slow-growing, long-lived, locally resident population — and can do it invisibly, because pots are fished unattended. Every serious potting jurisdiction therefore controls some combination of: permits, pot numbers, gear marking, minimum sizes, the return of egg-bearing females, V-notch schemes, escape gap dimensions, closed seasons and prohibitions on sale. The specifics differ everywhere and change regularly. FishingHQ does not state what applies anywhere and a reader must establish it from the local authority before setting anything.
What it is
Setting baited traps on the bottom for crustaceans, marked by a surface buoy and hauled after a soak period. Recreational potting is the small-scale version of the commercial creel fishery and uses essentially the same gear, which is a substantial part of why it is regulated as tightly as it is.
How it works
A pot catches by scent and by architecture. The bait releases a scent plume that a crustacean detects downstream and follows along the bottom, and the entrance funnel presents an inward path that is easy to walk and an outward one that is not — usually because the funnel's inner end is raised above the floor of the pot, so the animal searching the perimeter at floor level never meets it.
A parlour pot adds a second chamber behind the first, entered through a further funnel. Animals move through into it, and the parlour is markedly harder to leave. This raises the catch and also raises the consequence of a pot being lost.
Soak time is the main variable the potter controls. Too short and the plume has not reached anything; too long and the bait is exhausted, the catch has begun eating each other, and undersized animals have been held for days. Escape gaps are what make a long soak defensible, because undersized animals can leave whenever they choose.
The buoy and its line are as much a part of the gear as the pot. The line has to exceed the depth at high water by a real margin or the buoy is pulled under and the pot is lost, which is the commonest way recreational pots become ghost gear.
What it is for
It takes bottom-dwelling crustaceans that forage at night over hard ground — animals no rod method reaches and that otherwise can only be taken by diving. It is also the only method here that works while the fisher is somewhere else, which is its whole efficiency and its whole problem.
Setting it up
- Establish the rules first: permit, pot numbers, marking requirements, minimum sizes, escape gaps and closed periods are all local and all commonly enforced.
- Fit escape gaps of the correct dimension for the fishery, whether or not they are required. A pot without them holds undersized animals for the whole soak.
- Rope length must exceed the depth at high water with margin, or the tide pulls the buoy under and the pot is lost.
- Mark the gear as the local rules require, and in a way that identifies you. Unmarked gear is indistinguishable from abandoned gear.
- Set where the ground actually holds the animal — hard bottom, rock edges, kelp margins — rather than where the boat happens to be.
- Haul on a schedule you can genuinely keep. Gear you cannot get back to is gear you should not have set.
Advantages
- It reaches quarry no rod method can take.
- It is highly selective for species when the pot and entrance are correctly sized.
- Undersized animals can be released alive and in good condition, which is not true of most gear.
- It works unattended, which is its efficiency.
Limitations
- It works unattended, which is also its danger: lost gear goes on fishing indefinitely.
- It is heavily regulated everywhere and prohibited in many places for recreational use.
- Gear is expensive, heavy, easily lost to weather and tide, and vulnerable to interference.
- The pressure a small number of pots can exert on a resident population is much greater than it looks.
Conditions
Hard ground — rock, boulder, reef edge, kelp — is where the animals are, and it is also where gear snags. Depth is limited in practice by what can be hauled by hand. Weather sets everything: pots set before a blow are frequently rolled, buried or lost, and the decision to leave gear down through bad weather is a decision to accept that. Strong tidal streams pull buoys under and drag pots off the ground.
Common mistakes
- Setting without checking the rules. Potting is one of the practices most likely to result in prosecution and gear seizure.
- Too little rope, so the tide sinks the buoy and the gear is lost.
- Omitting escape gaps, which turns every soak into a holding pen for undersized animals.
- Setting more gear than can be reliably hauled, particularly before a spell of weather.
- Keeping egg-bearing females. Where it is not illegal it is still the single most damaging thing a potter can do to a local population.

- A hole of a defined dimension in the pot's side, sized so that undersized animals can leave of their own accord during the soak. A legal requirement in most regulated fisheries.
- Berried
- A female carrying eggs on her underside. Returning berried animals is a legal requirement in most jurisdictions and good practice in all of them.
- V-notch
- A notch cut into the tail fan of a breeding female before release, marking her as protected. A notched animal must be returned wherever the scheme operates, and the mark persists through several moults.
- Ghost fishing
- Lost or abandoned gear continuing to catch and kill indefinitely. The principal environmental objection to potting and the reason gear marking and retrieval matter.
Ghost gear, and why this method carries an obligation nothing else does
A lost rod loses a rod. A lost pot goes on fishing.
The mechanism is unpleasant and it is worth stating precisely. A pot that is no longer hauled keeps catching. The animals inside die. Those dead animals become bait, which attracts more animals, which enter, which die. A self-baiting trap on the seabed can continue that cycle for as long as the pot retains its shape — years, in the case of modern plastic-coated wire and synthetic netting. Estimates of the scale of this vary widely and the uncertainty is real, but the direction is not in dispute and it is the principal environmental objection to potting as a practice.
What reduces it is unglamorous and entirely within a recreational potter's control. Rope long enough that the tide cannot sink the buoy. Gear marked so that it can be identified and returned. Setting no more than can genuinely be hauled on the intended schedule, particularly ahead of weather. Biodegradable escape panels or rot cord, which many jurisdictions now require and which cause a lost pot to open itself within a season. And going back for gear that has moved rather than writing it off.
The obligation follows from the method rather than from an ethical position bolted onto it. Somebody who sets a passive killing device in the sea has taken on responsibility for retrieving it, and that is the part of this practice a reader most needs told.

Freshwater crayfish trapping is a different activity with the same gear
Trapping crayfish uses recognisably the same device and sits in an entirely different regulatory and ethical frame, because in most of Europe and much of North America the crayfish in question is an invasive species and the fishery is a management question.
Where signal crayfish and other North American species have established outside their native range, they displace native crayfish, transmit crayfish plague to them, and undermine banks by burrowing. That makes trapping look like an unambiguous good, and it is not, for two specific reasons that are widely misunderstood.
FIRST, TRAPPING DOES NOT ERADICATE THEM. Traps select strongly for large adult males and take a small proportion of a population that is mostly small and mostly elsewhere, and the removal of large individuals can release predation pressure on juveniles. The research on trapping as a control measure is not encouraging and it is a long way from the intuitive picture.
SECOND, TRAPPING IS A PRINCIPAL VECTOR FOR SPREAD. Moving traps between waters moves plague spores and juveniles, and moving live crayfish — to another water, to a garden pond, to a kitchen — is how most new populations start. This is precisely why licensing exists: in England and Wales trapping requires authorisation, in Scotland it is generally prohibited, and across the range live movement is a serious offence.
The practical upshot is that a person who wants to trap crayfish needs the local authority's position before doing anything, and needs to treat biosecurity — check, clean, dry, and nothing live leaves the water — as the point of the exercise rather than as paperwork.
