Safety
Species that bite — Minor injury
The beak at the centre of the arm web is the only hard part of the animal and is built to break crab shell. A bite is a puncture wound, octopus saliva is biologically active, and marine puncture wounds are prone to infection.
What reduces it: Keep the underside of the arm web away from bare skin and keep fingers out of the centre of it. Use a sealing catch bag rather than carrying the animal against your body. Clean any bite properly and seek medical advice if it becomes inflamed.
Worse when:
- Carrying a live octopus against bare skin or in an open bag.
- Reaching blind into a crevice to feel for an animal.
Fish welfare — Can cause injury needing treatment
The evidence for cephalopod sentience is strong, and the traditional dispatch methods — beating the animal, or leaving it to die in air in a bag or bucket — are precisely those the reviews recommend against. Separately, taking a female brooding egg strings destroys an entire clutch alongside an animal that had stopped feeding and would have died at hatching anyway.
What reduces it: Kill an octopus intended for the table immediately and decisively by destroying the brain between and behind the eyes. Do not take animals you do not intend to use, and do not leave one to die slowly. Leave any den containing egg strings alone and move to the next hole.
Worse when:
- Hot conditions, where an animal left in a bag dies slowly and the flesh spoils as well.
- Following traditional or online practice uncritically.
- Brooding season, when females are concentrated in dens and are the easiest animals to find.
Precautions that always apply here
- Keep fingers out of the gills and clear of the teeth. Gill damage is usually fatal to the fish, and several species will remove skin from a finger.
- Wet your hands before touching a fish. Dry hands strip the protective mucus layer that keeps infection out.

IT IS A MOLLUSC WITH A VERTEBRATE'S PROBLEM-SOLVING. Eight arms with no internal skeleton, a beak that is the only hard part of the body, chromatophores that change colour and texture in under a second, and a demonstrated capacity to open containers, use shelter tools and learn by observation. The evidence for cephalopod sentience is strong enough that a number of jurisdictions now regulate their handling and killing.
AND IT LIVES ABOUT AS LONG AS A LARGE DOG DOES NOT. Most common octopus live one to two years, breed once, and die. The female stops feeding to guard her eggs and dies as they hatch. That single fact — semelparity on a one-year cycle — is why populations swing so violently between seasons and years, and why octopus abundance is far more responsive to water temperature and food than to fishing effort in any given month.
IT IS FOUND BY READING A DEN RATHER THAN BY SEARCHING WATER. An octopus in residence collects, and the litter of shells, crab carapaces and stones outside a hole — the midden — announces the occupant long before the animal is seen.

- EIGHT ARMS, no tentacles. A squid or cuttlefish has eight arms plus TWO long feeding tentacles; an octopus has eight limbs and nothing else. This separates the groups instantly.
- TWO ROWS OF SUCKERS along each arm. The curled octopus of northern European waters, Eledone cirrhosa, has a SINGLE row — the fastest way to tell the two apart where both occur.
- No internal shell and no fins. A cuttlefish has a calcified cuttlebone and a fin skirt; a squid has a stiff internal pen and terminal fins; an octopus is a soft bag with a beak.
- Colour and texture change continuously and are not identification characters at all. The same animal will be brick red, mottled brown, pale grey and warty within seconds.
- A midden of shells, crab carapaces and stones outside a hole in rock or reef indicates an occupied den, and is what a searching diver actually looks for.
- Arm span commonly around a metre; noticeably larger and longer-armed than the curled octopus.

Exceptional: Around 10 kg and an arm span approaching 1.3 m is the widely reported upper end. Very large individuals are old by the standards of an animal that rarely sees a second birthday.
Lifecycle and reproduction
Short and terminal. Common octopus hatch from eggs as tiny planktonic paralarvae, drift and feed in the water column for weeks before settling to the bottom, then grow extremely fast on a diet of crustaceans and molluscs. Most individuals live one to two years. Reproduction happens once: the male transfers a spermatophore using a modified arm and dies within months; the female lays tens or hundreds of thousands of eggs in strings inside a den, stops feeding entirely to tend and aerate them, and dies as they hatch. This is semelparity — breed once, then die — and it means a population is effectively rebuilt from scratch every year or two.
The female's brooding period runs to weeks or months depending on temperature, during which she does not feed and defends the den continuously. Because she dies at hatching and the male dies after mating, there are no repeat spawners and no accumulated reserve of large old breeders in the population. The practical consequences are direct: abundance swings sharply with temperature and food supply between years, a good octopus season is not evidence that the next will be, and a brooding female taken from a den costs the entire clutch she was tending as well as the animal.
Feeding and senses
A nocturnal ambush hunter of crustaceans and molluscs — crabs above all, then bivalves, gastropods and small fish. The octopus envelops prey in the arm web, and either bites through the shell with its beak or drills it and injects a paralysing, digestive saliva. Crab remains and drilled shells are the diagnostic litter of a den. In practical terms this is why crab is the near-universal octopus bait and lure, and why a jig or lure that behaves like a crab on the bottom outperforms anything that swims.
Vision is excellent and the eye is a genuinely camera-like eye evolved entirely independently of the vertebrate one — and yet the animal is almost certainly colour-blind, achieving its colour matching by other means. Touch and chemoreception are distributed: the suckers taste as well as grip, and a very large share of the nervous system sits in the arms rather than the brain, so an arm exploring a crevice is doing a great deal of its own processing. Practically, an octopus sees a diver clearly and early, judges intent, and will either flatten into a crevice or leave.
Through the year
Strongly seasonal in shallow water and strongly variable between years. Animals move inshore to feed and breed in warmer months across much of the range, with abundance in any given season depending on recruitment from a short-lived population rather than on a stable stock. Because the whole population turns over in one to two years, a run of favourable temperature can produce a conspicuous local abundance and an unfavourable one can produce near-absence, and neither is a stable baseline.
Distribution
Eastern Atlantic from the southern North Sea and the English Channel south along the European and African coasts, throughout the Mediterranean, and around the Atlantic islands. Occupies rock, reef, rubble and seagrass from the intertidal down to around 200 m, denning in holes, crevices and any container it can occupy. Assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, which reflects a fast-growing, highly fecund, short-lived animal rather than an absence of local depletion — octopus fisheries can and do exhaust local ground within a season.

Why anglers care
A major quarry in its own right across southern Europe, north-west Africa and the Atlantic islands, taken by hand and hook while snorkelling or freediving, by pot and by shore fishing with crab-imitating lures. It is also central to the food culture of much of its range in a way few catalogue species are — pulpo in Galicia, polvo in Portugal, htapodi in Greece — and it is one of the species where handling and dispatch have become a live regulatory question because of the sentience evidence. Handling and returning
An octopus is strong, boneless, and extremely good at not being held. It will move into any gap, grip with hundreds of suckers, and a large one is genuinely difficult to control; a catch bag that seals is not optional, because an octopus in an open bag leaves. THE BEAK IS THE ONLY HARD PART AND IT BITES. It sits at the centre of the arm web on the underside, it can break shell, and a bite is a puncture that can be venomous to a degree in some species and is prone to infection in all of them — keep the web away from bare skin and keep fingers away from the centre. An octopus intended for the table should be killed immediately and decisively by destroying the brain between the eyes, not allowed to die by exhaustion. On the water: chill immediately, because cephalopod flesh degrades quickly in warmth. AND DO NOT TAKE A BROODING FEMALE from a den holding egg strings — she has stopped feeding, she will die at hatching in any case, and taking her destroys the whole clutch as well.
One year, one clutch, then death — and what that does to a fishery
Almost everything unusual about octopus fishing follows from a life history that no fish in this catalogue shares.
THE ANIMAL BREEDS ONCE AND DIES. Common octopus generally live one to two years. The male mates, passing a spermatophore with a modified arm, and dies within months. The female lays tens or hundreds of thousands of eggs in strings inside a den, then STOPS FEEDING ENTIRELY to guard and aerate them, and dies as they hatch. This is semelparity, and it means there is no such thing as an old breeding octopus holding a population together.
SO THE POPULATION IS REBUILT FROM SCRATCH EVERY YEAR OR TWO. There is no reserve of large mature animals accumulating over decades in the way there is for a tope or a skate. What exists in any season is essentially the survivors of one or two recruitment events.
WHICH IS WHY ABUNDANCE SWINGS SO VIOLENTLY. Temperature and food supply during the planktonic and early benthic phase determine how many animals survive to be catchable, and the effect is large and fast. A conspicuous local abundance one year genuinely tells you very little about the next, and reasoning from 'there were octopus everywhere last summer' is reasoning from a population that no longer exists.
IT ALSO MEANS LOCAL DEPLETION IS REAL DESPITE A LEAST CONCERN LISTING. The global assessment reflects a fast-growing, hugely fecund, widely distributed animal. It does not mean a particular headland cannot be cleared out within a season, because the animals there are a single short-lived cohort and there is nothing behind them.
AND IT MAKES ONE SPECIFIC DECISION MATTER MORE THAN ANY OTHER. A den containing egg strings holds a female who has stopped eating and will die when they hatch. Taking her adds one animal to a bag and removes the entire clutch, at the one point in the life cycle where the population is most concentrated in a single individual. It is the clearest case in this catalogue where leaving an animal is straightforwardly the right call, and it costs nothing but a walk to the next hole.
THE FLIP SIDE IS ENCOURAGING. A short-lived, fast-growing, extremely fecund animal recovers quickly when ground is left alone — far faster than any elasmobranch. Rotation between areas, and simply not stripping a piece of reef, works here in a way it does not for slow-breeding species.

Reading a den, crab baits, and killing an animal the evidence says is sentient
Finding an octopus is a search for evidence rather than for the animal, and taking one raises a question most quarry does not.
THE MIDDEN GIVES IT AWAY. An octopus in residence brings food home and discards the remains at the entrance. A scatter of crab carapaces, broken bivalve shells — often DRILLED, with a neat hole where the animal bored through — and gathered stones outside a crevice is an occupied den. Divers and shore hunters look for the litter, not the octopus.
THE ANIMAL ITSELF IS BUILT NOT TO BE SEEN. Chromatophores change colour and skin texture in well under a second, and an octopus flattened into a crevice against matching rock is genuinely invisible from a metre away. Colour is therefore useless as an identification character and useless as a search cue.
CRAB IS THE ANSWER TO ALMOST EVERY BAIT QUESTION. The diet is dominated by crabs, and the whole apparatus — the arm web that envelops, the beak that breaks shell, the saliva that drills and paralyses — is built around them. This is why crab-imitating jigs and lures worked slowly on the bottom outfish anything that swims, and why a real crab is the traditional bait wherever it is lawful.
THE HUNT IS SLOW AND SHALLOW — snorkelling and shallow freediving over rock and rubble, worked methodically along structure. The depth is modest and the skill is observational.
AND THEN THERE IS THE PART THAT HAS CHANGED. The evidence for sentience in cephalopods is strong — strong enough that formal reviews have concluded it and that several jurisdictions now regulate how these animals are handled and killed. That has practical consequences an angler can act on immediately.
KILL IT IMMEDIATELY AND DECISIVELY IF IT IS FOR THE TABLE. The traditional methods the reviews specifically recommend against are the ones most often described online: beating the animal against rock, or simply leaving it in a bag or bucket to die in air. An octopus taken for food should be killed at once by destroying the brain, which lies between and behind the eyes.
DO NOT LEAVE ONE TO DIE SLOWLY, and do not take one you do not intend to use.
CHILL IT AT ONCE. Cephalopod flesh degrades fast in warmth, and octopus is generally taken in warm places.
