Before you spearfish — this comes first
- Get proper instruction before you spearfish. A recognised freediving or spearfishing course teaches the things that actually kill people in this sport, and reading about them is not the same as being taught them.
- Dive with a buddy, and dive one up, one down — one diver in the water, one on the surface watching them, every dive. A breath-hold blackout is silent and gives no warning; a watching buddy is the difference between an incident and a fatality.
- Stay inside your own training and experience. Depth and breath-hold times are personal, they change day to day, and nobody else's numbers apply to you.
- Understand the conditions before you enter the water: visibility, current, swell, tide, boat traffic and your exit. Conditions decide whether a dive is reasonable far more often than skill does.
- Use equipment you have been shown how to use, check it before every session, and be visible — a marked float and line are how boat traffic knows you are there.
- Never extend a dive for a fish. No catch is worth pushing a breath-hold, and the urge to take one more second is exactly what a blackout feels like from the inside — which is to say, like nothing at all.

Safety
Entanglement — Can cause serious injury or death
Extracting an animal from a den means a hand and arm in a hole, and the same trapping mechanism applies as for crustaceans — surge moves the diver while the arm stays put. An octopus itself grips rock with considerable force and will not be pulled out easily.
What reduces it: Do not reach into anything you could not withdraw from instantly, work with the surge rather than against it, and abandon any hole that grips. Surface on your own plan rather than on the animal's.
Shallow water blackout and breath-hold loss of consciousness — Can cause serious injury or death
Working an octopus out of a den takes longer than intended, and the impulse to finish rather than surface is precisely the pressure that produces a silent hypoxic blackout.
What reduces it: Leave the animal and return on the next dive. Dive one up and one down with a competent buddy watching every dive, and never extend a dive for a catch.
Fish welfare — Can cause injury needing treatment
Cephalopods have complex nervous systems and are included in animal welfare legislation in several jurisdictions. An animal handled at length, carried alive, or dispatched poorly is a specific welfare failure rather than a general one.
What reduces it: Dispatch immediately and properly rather than carrying the animal alive, take only what will be used, and do not handle the animal for entertainment.
Taking octopus and cuttlefish on a breath-hold is an old and geographically widespread practice — Mediterranean, Atlantic Iberia, Japan, the Pacific islands, and the temperate southern hemisphere — and Sprint 29's audit found the catalogue silent on it despite holding records for both animals.
IT IS A DIFFERENT HUNT FROM SPEARING FISH, IN KIND. A fish is spotted, approached and shot at a distance. An octopus is FOUND. The animal is in a den — a crevice, under a rock, in a discarded shell or pot — and its camouflage is so effective that it is essentially invisible until something gives it away. What experienced divers look for is not the octopus but the evidence of one: a midden of empty crab and shell debris outside a hole, a suspiciously tidy arrangement of stones, a den entrance that is too neat.
SO THE SKILL IS OBSERVATIONAL RATHER THAN BALLISTIC, and that is the most interesting thing about it. Cuttlefish differ again — they are found in open water over sand and weed, hover, and will approach a diver with obvious curiosity, changing colour and pattern continuously.
AND THE ANIMAL IS UNUSUALLY CAPABLE. Cephalopods have the most complex nervous systems of any invertebrate, demonstrate problem-solving and individual recognition in laboratory conditions, and change colour, pattern and skin texture within a second under direct neural control. An octopus that has been approached once behaves differently the second time. This is not an animal that behaves like a fish and pretending otherwise produces a poor description of the hunt.
WHICH IS WHY THE WELFARE QUESTION HAS TO BE STATED RATHER THAN AVOIDED. Cephalopod cognition and capacity for suffering are taken seriously enough that several jurisdictions include them in animal welfare legislation covering scientific procedures, which is a status no fish in this catalogue has. That does not settle whether they may be taken — they are a traditional and important food across much of their range, and this record takes no position on that — but it does mean the practical obligation is clear: dispatch immediately and properly, do not play with the animal, and do not take more than will be used.
THE REGULATORY PICTURE IS SPECIFIC AND VARIABLE. Some jurisdictions prohibit taking octopus while spearfishing, some set minimum weights, some close seasons around spawning, and some prohibit particular methods of extraction. Octopus stocks in several regions are under substantial commercial pressure. None of it is stated here.
Reading a den, and why the midden is the tell
The transferable skill in this activity is not a technique but a way of looking, and it works because of something specific about how an octopus lives.
AN OCTOPUS IS A CENTRAL-PLACE FORAGER. It occupies a den — a crevice, a hollow under a boulder, an empty shell, a discarded bottle or pot — and makes feeding excursions from it, returning with prey to eat in safety. Crabs, bivalves and gastropods are consumed at the den and the empty shells are pushed out.
THAT PRODUCES A MIDDEN. Over time a used den accumulates a scatter of clean, broken crab carapaces and drilled or gaped shells immediately outside its entrance, and that debris field is far more visible than the animal. A diver who has learned to read middens finds octopus in water where a diver looking for octopus finds none.
THE SECOND TELL IS ARRANGEMENT. Octopus frequently pile stones, shells or debris at the den mouth to narrow or block it, and the result looks deliberate because it is. A hole with a tidy stone doorstep in an otherwise disordered reef is worth a second look.
THE THIRD IS THE EYE. When nothing else gives it away, the animal is sometimes betrayed by a single horizontal pupil in a mass of texture that otherwise matches the rock perfectly — camouflage that resolves the instant you know what you are looking at and not before.
CUTTLEFISH ARE FOUND DIFFERENTLY. They hover over sand, eelgrass and weed edges rather than denning, they are often in open water, and they are actively curious about a diver — approaching, hovering, and flickering through colour changes. They are also, in the warmer months, gathered inshore to spawn, attaching ink-stained egg clusters to weed and structure, and taking spawning animals over their own egg masses is a decision worth making consciously rather than by default.
AND THE SAME OBSERVATIONAL SKILL HAS A NON-EXTRACTIVE USE. A diver who can find octopus can watch them, and a great deal of what is known about the animal's behaviour in the wild has come from exactly that.
