A slender coastal tuna of the Indo-Pacific that comes close enough inshore to be cast to from beaches and rocks, unusually among tunas.

Longtail tuna is the tuna that ordinary shore anglers can actually catch. Where most tunas are creatures of open ocean, longtail work close inshore across northern Australia and the Indo-Pacific — into bays, along beaches and around headlands — chasing baitfish within casting range of the rocks.

It is slimmer than the other Thunnus, with a distinctly longer, more tapered rear body, and the pectoral fins are short. Colourless oval spots and streaks on the belly help confirm it.

It fights extremely hard for its size and is a major light-tackle target, though its eating quality is regarded as inferior to other tunas, which shapes how it is treated after capture.

Lifecycle and reproduction

Fast-growing and shorter-lived than the large oceanic tunas, maturing within a few years. Coastal rather than oceanic in habit, which is unusual for the genus.

Spawns in coastal waters in the warmer months, broadcasting eggs in batches over an extended season rather than in a single event. Spawning is coastal rather than oceanic, which is consistent with the species' generally inshore habits and unusual among the tunas.

Feeding and senses

Takes small schooling baitfish, squid and crustaceans, hunting in fast surface-feeding schools that push bait against the surface and against structure.

Why anglers care

A major light-tackle target across northern Australia and the Indo-Pacific, taken by casting metal lures, stickbaits and flies into surface-feeding schools from beaches, rocks and small boats. Its significance is that it puts genuine tuna fishing within reach of shore anglers. Practitioner consensus is that presentation speed and matching the size of the bait matter more than lure colour.

Handling and returning

A fast, powerful fish that fights to exhaustion and heats up quickly. If releasing, keep the fish in the water, minimise the fight where possible and revive properly. If retaining, bleed and chill immediately — eating quality depends heavily on prompt handling and is otherwise poor.

A coastal tuna that spawns over the shelf

Longtail tuna reproduction follows the scombrid pattern with the distinction that it happens close to land.

SPAWNING IS IN WARM COASTAL AND SHELF WATER rather than in the open ocean, which is unusual among tunas and reflects the species' neritic habit generally. Spawning areas are therefore within the same water the coastal fisheries work.

IT IS BATCH SPAWNING OVER AN EXTENDED WARM-SEASON PERIOD, with females releasing eggs repeatedly and total fecundity high.

THE TRIGGER IS TEMPERATURE, so timing varies with latitude and between years, and spawning is more protracted nearer the equator and compressed at the range margins.

EGGS AND LARVAE ARE PELAGIC and drift in the surface layer over the shelf.

MATURITY COMES EARLY — within the first two or three years — and growth is fast, which is the usual pattern for a fast-living coastal scombrid.

THE SPECIES IS COMPARATIVELY POORLY STUDIED for its importance. Longtail tuna support substantial fisheries across the Indo-Pacific, and their stock assessment and reproductive biology are less well characterised than those of the oceanic tunas — a genuine gap rather than an omission from this record.

AND THE COASTAL SPAWNING IS THE VULNERABILITY. A fish that reproduces in the same shelf water where the gillnet, purse seine and recreational fisheries operate has less spatial refuge than an oceanic spawner does.

How big a longtail tuna gets

Longtail tuna size is the reason the species has the reputation it has among Australian and Indo-Pacific anglers: it is small for a tuna and fights like something considerably larger.

A TYPICAL ROD-CAUGHT FISH IS 8 TO 15 KILOGRAMS AND 70 TO 100 CENTIMETRES. Over 20 kilograms is a large longtail, and the species' reported maximum is around 145 centimetres and 35 kilograms.

SET AGAINST THE OTHER TUNAS THAT PUTS IT AT THE SMALL END. Yellowfin and bluefin reach several times that weight. Longtail is a coastal tuna rather than an oceanic one, and its size reflects the niche.

WHICH IS PRECISELY WHY IT MATTERS TO SHORE AND SMALL-BOAT ANGLERS. A tuna that comes within range of a beach, a headland or a small boat, and that can be landed on tackle a person can hold, is a very different proposition from a fish that requires a game boat. Longtail are taken from the shore in northern Australia and across parts of the Indo-Pacific, which almost no other tuna allows.

THEY ARE FAST-GROWING AND MODERATELY LONG-LIVED, maturing at two to three years.

AND THE SIZE HAS A CATCH-HANDLING CONSEQUENCE THAT IS EASY TO MISS. A ten-kilogram tuna is small enough that an angler assumes it can be handled casually and large enough that its centre stays warm for a long time — and it is a scombrid, in warm water, which puts it squarely in the group where histamine formation is the recognised hazard. The fish is exactly big enough to be dangerous to handle badly and exactly small enough that people do.

Handling a longtail tuna

Longtail handling is the clearest single illustration in this catalogue of why the catch-to-table layer exists, because everything about the fish pushes towards doing it badly.

THE FISH IS WARM BEFORE IT DIES. Tunas generate heat in their tissues, and the FDA guidance singles them out as "species that generate heat, resulting in internal temperatures that may exceed environmental temperatures". A longtail landed in tropical air is starting from a higher temperature than the day.

IT IS A SCOMBRID, in the group where histamine formation is the recognised hazard, with the mass of histidine-rich dark muscle that defines the group.

IT IS CAUGHT IN THE WARMEST CONDITIONS the FDA's own control table addresses.

AND IT IS SMALL ENOUGH TO CARRY, which is the trap. A fish this size gets put in a bag, on a deck, or in the back of a vehicle, in a way a fifty-kilogram fish never would — and the centre of a ten-kilogram tuna stays warm for a long time regardless.

SO THE SEQUENCE IS NOT OPTIONAL FOR THIS SPECIES. Dispatch immediately. Bleed at once while the heart still moves blood, which matters more in a fish with this much dark muscle than in almost anything else. Get it into an ice slurry rather than onto ice, and pack the cavity if the fish is large. Warm hours are cumulative and irreversible: histamine cannot be removed by cooking, freezing or anything else once it has formed.

THE RELEASE CASE IS ALSO REAL. Longtail are frequently released, and a tuna played to exhaustion in warm water is a fish with a poor chance. Heavy tackle that shortens the fight, minimal air exposure and returning the fish head-first with water over the gills are the variables that matter, and they matter more here than the ordinary handling advice suggests because the fish's own metabolism is working against it.

How longtail tuna are fished, and why

A fast, shoaling, open-water tuna that comes unusually close inshore, which is why it is one of the few tuna reachable from rocks and beaches as well as from boats.

SPINNING AND POPPING work because the fish drives baitfish to the surface in visible feeding activity, and a lure cast into that activity is taken as one of the fleeing bait.

SALTWATER FLY FISHING works for the same reason and is genuinely practical for this species, which is unusual among tuna and follows from how close inshore they feed.

THE PROBLEM IS ALWAYS TIMING RATHER THAN PRESENTATION. The fish are visible, they are feeding, and the window is minutes. Everything about the tackle — long casting range, fast retrieve, immediate readiness — is designed around getting a lure into a surface event before it ends.

AND THE FIGHT IS THE OTHER CONSTRAINT. Sustained high-speed runs on light shore tackle are what make this a specialist fishery rather than a casual one.
