Dogtooth tuna is among the reef fish most consistently associated with ciguatera poisoning in the tropical Pacific. Ciguatoxins accumulate up the reef food chain and concentrate in large predators; they are not destroyed by cooking, freezing or any preparation, and there is no test available to an angler. Poisoning causes gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms including the reversal of hot and cold sensation, and can persist for months.
What reduces it: Take local advice on which reefs and which species are affected, because ciguatera is intensely local and residents know. Avoid the largest fish, and avoid the liver, roe and viscera, where toxin concentrates. Anybody with symptoms after eating reef fish needs medical assessment.
Worse when:
- On large fish, because the toxin accumulates with size and age.
- In the liver, roe and other organs rather than the muscle.
- On reefs with a known local history, which visiting anglers are exactly the people who will not know.

- Ground
Most tunas live in open water. The dogtooth does not: it is reef-associated, holding to pinnacle, drop-off and current-swept structure from the surface down to 250 m across the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa to French Polynesia, north to Japan and south to Australia.
It is a heavy, powerful, blue-black fish with a silvery belly, and the two features that name it and define it are the conical teeth set in strong jaws and the absence of the tail-fin markings the other tunas carry. FishBase records a maximum of 248 cm and 131 kg, with low resilience.
It is the fish that made modern vertical jigging what it is. A dogtooth hits a jig at a pinnacle and goes straight back down into the structure, and the first two seconds decide the outcome — which is why the tackle used for it is heavier than the fish's weight would suggest, why assist hooks and solid rings exist in the forms they do, and why the honest description of the fishing is that a high proportion of hooked fish are lost.
Two practical points are worth stating. It has a reduced swim bladder and takes barotrauma badly from depth, which limits what release can achieve. And it is one of the reef fish most consistently implicated in ciguatera poisoning in the tropical Pacific — the toxin accumulates up the reef food chain, is not destroyed by cooking, and large predatory reef fish carry the highest loads. Local advice on which fish from which reefs are eaten is not folklore, and it is the only useful guide there is.

Lifecycle and reproduction
Reef-associated and oceanodromous over a depth range of 0 to 250 m in tropical water of roughly 20 to 28°C. FishBase gives it LOW resilience. Unlike the oceanic tunas it holds to particular structure, which makes it findable and makes a productive pinnacle exhaustible.
Not detailed on the FishBase record for this species. Its low resilience and structure-fidelity are the facts that carry the management consequence: a slow-replacing predator that lives on a specific reef feature can be removed from that feature faster than it returns to it.
Feeding and senses
An ambush and pursuit predator on reef fish and squid, working the current side of structure and taking prey with a fast committed strike. That behaviour is the whole of the jigging method: a metal jig worked fast through the water column beside a pinnacle imitates exactly what it is waiting for.
Speed and vision in clear tropical water, with strikes made from below and behind. It hunts the up-current edge of structure, which is why boat positioning matters more in this fishery than lure selection does.
Through the year
Present on the same structure through the year across most of its range, with the fishing governed by current, tide and water clarity rather than by season. The best fishing tends to coincide with running tide over a pinnacle rather than with a month.

Why anglers care
The defining target of Indo-Pacific vertical jigging and popping, taken on heavy metal jigs worked fast beside pinnacle and drop-off, on stickbaits and poppers at the surface, and on trolled and live baits. Tackle for it is chosen for the first two seconds after the take, when the fish drives back into structure, and a high loss rate is the honest description of the fishery rather than a sign of doing it wrong.

What reduces it: Unhook with long-handled pliers or a hook remover, control the fish across the body rather than by the jaw, and cut the assist rig on a badly hooked fish.
