Reading the conditions

Tide, wind, weather, water colour, temperature, light, river level and the season — what each one actually changes about the fishing, and what to do differently because of it. No scores and no best-time-to-fish number: every line here is a mechanism you then apply to the water in front of you.

Tide and current

What you notice
A tide table gives times and heights. What you see is water moving, standing still, or moving the other way — and moving faster in some places than others.
What it changes
Moving water carries food and pins it against structure, so it decides both where fish feed and when. Most marks fish for a couple of hours of the tide and are dead for the rest of it, and which hours those are is a property of the mark rather than of the day.
What to do about it
Find out which state of tide the mark fishes before you decide what time to arrive. Fish the moving water and use slack for moving about, changing rigs and eating. Add weight or change to a grip lead when the run is strong rather than letting the bait roll.
When not to fish
When the tide will cut off your way back. This is the commonest way a coastal session becomes a rescue, and it closes the exit long before it reaches where you are standing.

Wind and sea state

What you notice
Direction and strength on a forecast, and then the sea itself: flat, a chop, a swell running, or white water on the ground you meant to fish.
What it changes
Wind stirs food off the bottom and pushes it downwind, which is why an onshore blow can turn a dead beach on. It also decides what you can physically fish: casting distance, bite detection and whether you can hold bottom at all.
What to do about it
Fish into or across the wind rather than with it if you can bear the casting, because that is where the food ends up. Drop the casting range and go heavier when it is rough. Give a beach a few hours after a blow rather than fishing it at the peak.
When not to fish
When the swell is breaking over the ground you meant to stand on, or when the wind is offshore and you are afloat in anything small. Both are decisions to make in the car park rather than at the water.

    A weather window is a period in which conditions are workable rather than merely forecast, and reading one means understanding wind, swell, tide and their interactions rather than a single number.

Weather, fronts and pressure

What you notice
A front arriving or clearing, a settled spell, rain on the way, thunder in the forecast. And the thing everybody argues about: the moon.
What it changes
Less than anglers say it does, and this is the axis where FishingHQ most often has to say so. Some effects are real and mechanical — rain colours a river and raises it, wind and pressure change sea state. Others are convention repeated confidently, and the pages say which is which.
What to do about it
Use weather to predict the things it plainly controls — water level, colour, sea state, safety — and treat the rest as a reason to fish rather than a reason to stay home. A settled spell is worth more for making the water readable than for anything it does to the fish.
When not to fish
With thunder about. Carbon rods and open water are a combination with no upside, and it is the one weather call on this page that is not a matter of judgement.

    Anglers are certain that pressure affects fishing and the controlled evidence is thin. What is well supported is that fronts change light, wind, temperature and water — and those are enough to explain most of it.

Water clarity and colour

What you notice
How far down you can see. Gin-clear, a tinge of colour, chocolate after a flood, or plankton-green in high summer.
What it changes
It decides which sense the fish is hunting with, and therefore what a lure or bait has to do. In clear water a fish inspects before it commits; in coloured water it finds by vibration and smell and commits without looking closely.
What to do about it
Coloured water: bigger profile, more vibration, more scent, and fish closer in. Clear water: finer line, longer casts, more natural presentation, and work at the light edges instead. Change the lure to match what the fish can actually detect rather than what looks good in the box.

    Water removes colours in a fixed order with depth, so a lure's colour changes as it sinks — and that physics does not add up to a ranking of which colour to tie on, however much anglers would like it to.

    Water absorbs light unevenly by wavelength, so red is effectively gone within the first few metres and every colour follows it — which means the character most people would name first is the one least available when it is needed.

    Turbidity shortens the distance at which anything can be seen, which shifts the balance from sight-hunting to vibration and scent for fish and anglers alike.

    Visibility decides the range at which fish are seen, the confidence with which they are identified, and — the part that matters most — whether a buddy can watch you at all.

    Visibility, current, swell and thermoclines decide whether a dive happens and what it can achieve — far more reliably than skill does.

Water temperature

What you notice
Rarely measured and usually inferred — the time of year, how long the weather has been settled, whether the water feels warm on your hand.
What it changes
Fish are the temperature of the water they are in, so it sets their metabolic rate and therefore how much and how often they need to eat. It is the slowest-moving thing on this page and the one that explains most of the year.
What to do about it
Cold water: slow everything down, smaller baits, fish the warmest part of the day and the deeper water. Warm water: fish faster and earlier, and expect the fish to move shallow at the light edges rather than sit in the heat.

Light and time of day

What you notice
Dawn, dusk, full sun, heavy cloud, or dark. And, at night, whatever artificial light there is: a harbour lamp, a pier light, a headtorch.
What it changes
Low light shifts the advantage from the prey to the predator, which is why the light edges are the most reliably productive hours in most fishing. Artificial light does the same thing in miniature and concentrates it in one place.
What to do about it
Be fishing before first light rather than arriving at it. Under bright sun, fish deeper, shaded or coloured water. At night, work slower, use bigger silhouettes, and set your gear out while you can still see it.
When not to fish
Anywhere at night that you have not walked in daylight first. Every hazard on a mark is the same at night and every escape route is harder to find.

    A genuine and mechanistic effect rather than folklore: at low light a predator that sees better than its prey has an advantage it does not have at either extreme, and the window is short.

    Cloud is an optical variable rather than a mood: it changes how much light reaches a given depth, how exposed a fish in shallow water feels, and therefore where in the water column it is willing to be.

    Darkness changes which sense the fish is using, how close it will come, and every single thing about the angler's own safety — and the third of those is the one that decides whether a night session is a good idea.

    After dark vision stops being the dominant sense for both the fish and the angler, and lure choice changes for a reason rather than by convention: what the fish is detecting is displacement and silhouette rather than detail.

    Squid fishing concentrates after dark not because squid prefer darkness, but because light creates a food chain in the water and the squid arrive at the end of it.

    Darkness does not add new hazards so much as remove the cues that let anglers avoid the existing ones, and it does so at the time of day when help is furthest away.

River level and flow

What you notice
Height against a bank or a gauge, how fast the water is moving, what colour it is, and what it is carrying.
What it changes
A rising river moves fish and food and turns some swims off entirely while switching others on. A falling, clearing river after a flood is the single most reliable condition in running water.
What to do about it
Fish the slacks and the inside of bends when it is high, and the creases and the faster water as it drops. Give a spate river a day after the peak rather than fishing the peak.
When not to fish
When the river is still rising hard. Wading in rising coloured water is a poor bet you cannot re-read once you are in it.

The season

What you notice
The month, and what the water has been doing for the weeks before it.
What it changes
It is the slow background to everything else on this page. Species arrive and leave, spawning moves fish and closes fisheries, and the same mark is a different proposition in February and August.
What to do about it
Target what is actually there rather than what you caught last time, and check the close seasons and size limits before you go — those change by fishery and by country, and FishingHQ routes you to the body that sets them rather than answering for it.

Conditions interact, they differ by mark, and the honest form of this knowledge is a mechanism you apply to water you can see rather than a prediction somebody made without seeing it.
