Kayak conditions: wind, tide, swell, and the decision not to launch

There is no wind speed that is safe and no wave height that is not. What decides a kayak day is how wind, tide, swell, temperature, daylight and your own range combine — and the most useful answer this subject has is often that today is not the day.

An offshore wind produces flat, sheltered, inviting water in the lee of the shore and open conditions a short distance out. It moves a stationary kayak seaward continuously, faster than a tired paddler can paddle back, and the paddler frequently does not notice until the return leg is already impossible.

What reduces it: Treat wind direction as the first question and wind speed as the second. In an offshore wind the answer is usually not to launch. Where a trip goes ahead, work out the return leg first, fix a turnaround time, and identify more than one place to land.

Worse when:

  • Gusty conditions, where the mean wind in a forecast understates what is actually arriving.
  • Later in the day, when the paddler is tired and the wind has typically risen.
  • On a falling or ebbing tide taking the craft in the same direction as the wind.

Moving water and currentsCan cause serious injury or death

When the tidal stream runs against the wind, waves are compressed into a short, steep, breaking sea. A wind speed that is comfortable with the tide becomes dangerous against it, and the change happens over the course of a single tide without the forecast wind altering at all.

What reduces it: Read the tide table and the tidal stream alongside the wind forecast, not instead of it. Know when the stream turns, and treat the period of wind against tide as a different set of conditions from the same wind with it.

Worse when:

  • Spring tides, where the stream runs hardest.
  • Over shallow banks, bars and around headlands, where the stream accelerates and the sea steepens further.

Tidal streams through narrows, around headlands and over banks can equal or exceed a kayak's cruising speed. Water like that cannot be made progress against by any paddler, so a crossing is only possible in the direction and at the time the stream allows.

What reduces it: Consult a tidal stream atlas rather than only a tide table, plan crossings for slack water, and do not treat a passage made easily with the stream as evidence it can be made back against it.

Every kayak angler eventually asks what wind speed is too much, and the honest answer is that the question has no number in it. Fifteen knots onshore across a sheltered estuary on a neap tide in August is a pleasant day. Fifteen knots offshore over a spring ebb on an open coast in February is a search and rescue callout. The wind speed is identical. Everything that matters is different.

So what follows is how the factors interact, because that is the transferable part. Any number given here would be read as permission, and there is no number that gives permission.

WIND DIRECTION MATTERS MORE THAN WIND SPEED. An onshore wind builds an uncomfortable, choppy sea at the launch and pushes a paddler who gets into difficulty back toward the land. An offshore wind does the opposite in both respects, and the second is the one that kills. It produces flat, sheltered, inviting water in the lee of the shore, and it takes a stationary kayak seaward faster than a tired paddler can paddle back. WIND AGAINST TIDE IS A MULTIPLIER, NOT AN ADDITION. When the tidal stream runs against the wind, the waves are compressed: shorter, steeper, closer together and far more likely to break. The same wind with the tide produces a long, low, manageable swell. This is why the same forecast produces two entirely different seas six hours apart, and why reading a wind forecast without a tide table is reading half the information.

SWELL IS NOT WIND. Swell is generated somewhere else, often days ago and a thousand miles away, and it arrives regardless of the local wind. A flat-calm morning with a two-metre ground swell is dangerous in shallow water, over a bar, and at the launch and landing, and it will not be in the wind forecast at all.

TIDAL STREAMS SET WHAT YOU CAN GET BACK FROM. A kayak's cruising speed is a few knots. A spring tide through a narrows, around a headland or over a shallow bank can equal or exceed it. Where that is true, the water is not somewhere a paddler can make progress against, and it is only crossable in the direction and at the time the water allows.

COLD WATER SETS THE CONSEQUENCE OF EVERYTHING ELSE. It does not affect whether a capsize happens; it decides what happens next.

DAYLIGHT, VISIBILITY AND FORECAST TREND. Fog removes navigation and being seen at the same time. A deteriorating forecast means the conditions on the return leg are not the ones being assessed on the beach. And a wind rising through the afternoon is the ordinary summer pattern, not a surprise.

Not launching is an answer, and so is coming back early

The output of a conditions assessment is frequently: do not launch. That is a complete and correct answer, it is the one experienced kayak anglers give most often, and it is not a failure of skill, fitness or equipment. A forecast that is marginal for a kayak is a forecast that is marginal, and there will be another day.

The corollary matters just as much and is given less often. A decision to launch is not a commitment to stay out. Conditions change, people get cold, people get tired, and the assessment made on the beach at eight in the morning is not binding at two in the afternoon. Turning back early, cutting a session short, or landing at the nearest safe beach rather than the one the car is parked at are all ordinary outcomes rather than defeats, and the last of those is worth planning for explicitly — a lift back to the car is a trivial problem compared with the paddle that was being avoided.

It is also worth naming the thing that pushes against all of this, because it is not ignorance. It is the drive, the early start, the forecast that was checked three times, the tide that only works this weekend, and the fish that somebody else caught yesterday. Every serious incident report in every branch of outdoor recreation contains some version of that pressure. Recognising it as pressure — rather than as information about the conditions — is most of the skill.

Equipment does not change this calculation and should not be allowed to. A drysuit buys time in cold water; it does not make cold water safe. A VHF summons help; it does not shorten the time help takes to arrive, and in an offshore wind on a winter afternoon that time is the whole problem. A better boat extends a range; it does not extend the paddler. The judgement is the safety system, and everything else supports it.

Planning the return leg first

The single most useful planning habit in kayak fishing inverts the obvious order: work out the journey home before deciding where to go.

The reason is that the outward leg is done fresh, usually with the wind or tide helping, and it always feels easy. The return is done tired, often later than intended, frequently against something, and it is the leg where every problem happens. A paddler who has drifted three kilometres downwind while fishing has not had an easy day out; they have an unplanned three-kilometre upwind paddle to do at the end of it.

So: identify where the wind and tide will be taking you while you fish, not where they are at the launch. Work out whether you could paddle back against them at your genuine speed rather than your best speed. Identify more than one place you could land, and know that the nearest safe beach beats the one your car is on, every time. Set a turnaround time and treat it as fixed, because the reason to extend it is always the fishing and the reason not to is always the weather.

And tell somebody ashore where you are going and when you will be back, with an agreed action if you are not. That single free measure does more for the outcome of a serious incident than any item of equipment on the boat, because it decides how long it is before anybody knows to look.

Reading the forecast you actually need

General weather apps forecast the weather over land, and the number they show is usually a mean wind rather than the gusts. Neither is what a small craft is operating in.

The marine products exist and are free. In the UK the Met Office issues an inshore waters forecast covering the coastal strip, separate from the shipping forecast, giving wind direction and force, sea state, visibility and weather, with a trend. In the United States the National Weather Service issues coastal and nearshore marine forecasts with small-craft advisories. Both are written for craft far larger and better found than a kayak, which is worth remembering when reading them: a sea state described as slight is being described from the deck of something with a cabin.

Gusts matter more than mean wind to a kayak, because a kayak is momentarily overpowered rather than steadily loaded, and a gust arriving beam-on while a rod is being held is a specific and common capsize. Tide tables and tidal stream atlases give the direction and rate of the stream — not just high and low water — and it is the stream, not the height, that a paddler is working against.

None of these tells you whether to go. They tell you what you would be going into. The decision is still a judgement, made by the person who knows their own range, their own boat and their own experience, and it is a judgement that has to be allowed to come out as no.
