Leashes on a fishing kayak

Every leash prevents a loss and creates an entanglement, which makes them the clearest safety trade-off in the discipline and one that has to be decided deliberately rather than by default.

Entanglement — Can cause serious injury or death
In a capsize the water is turbulent and several tethered objects move independently around a disoriented paddler. A leash can wrap a limb, a neck or the buoyancy aid, and a paddler who cannot free themselves cannot surface or re-enter.
What reduces it: Use the fewest leashes that solve a real problem, keep each as short as it can be, attach them low and outboard rather than across the cockpit, and carry a cutting tool on the buoyancy aid where it can be reached with either hand.
Worse when:
- In surf and in current, where the water is doing the wrapping rather than the paddler.
- Around structure, where a leash can snag something fixed while the craft keeps moving.
A leash is a short line tethering something to the kayak so that it does not sink or drift away. Kayak anglers use them for paddles, rods, nets, cameras, pliers and anything else that would otherwise be gone the first time the craft goes over. They are genuinely useful and they are not free.
WHAT THEY BUY. A paddle that stays with the boat after a capsize, which matters enormously because a kayak without a paddle is not a craft. Rods and equipment that are recoverable rather than on the bottom. And, less obviously, a tidier deck, because tethered items can be released rather than stowed.
WHAT THEY COST. Every leash is a length of line in a place where lines wrap. In a capsize the water is turbulent, the paddler is disoriented, and several tethered objects are moving independently around them. Entanglement in that situation is a genuine and documented hazard, and it is worse in surf, in current and around structure.
WHICH PRODUCES THE PRINCIPLE THE WHOLE SUBJECT REDUCES TO: THE FEWEST LEASHES THAT SOLVE A REAL PROBLEM, EACH AS SHORT AS IT CAN BE, AND EVERY ONE OF THEM CUTTABLE.
THE PADDLE LEASH IS THE ONE MOST WORTH HAVING AND THE MOST DEBATED. It protects the thing a paddler cannot do without, and it is also the longest, most central and most likely to wrap. Some experienced paddlers use one always, some only offshore, some never in surf — and all three positions are defensible provided the reasoning is the one above rather than habit.
THE ROD LEASH IS EASIER. Short, elasticated, attached low, and released rather than fought if a fish or a snag takes the rod somewhere.
AND ANCHOR LINES ARE NOT LEASHES AND MUST NEVER BE TREATED AS ONE. An anchor line holds the craft against moving water, which is a completely different set of forces, and it is the line most likely to capsize a kayak. It goes on a trolley with a quick release and it is the first thing cut.
