Long fins, and what blade stiffness does

A long blade moves more water per kick at a lower cadence, which uses less oxygen for the same distance — making fins one of the few pieces of equipment that directly extends how safely a diver can operate.
Freediving fins are long because efficiency matters more than acceleration. A long blade displaces a large volume of water gradually over a slow kick; a short blade displaces less, faster. For a diver whose limiting resource is oxygen, the slow efficient stroke wins decisively.
That is not a comfort argument. Effort is oxygen, oxygen is dive time, and dive time margin is the thing that separates a routine dive from an incident. Fins are safety-adjacent for exactly that reason.
BLADE MATERIAL sets stiffness and responsiveness.
PLASTIC is durable, cheap, forgiving of abuse and heavier. It is the right first choice: it survives rocks, boats and beginners, and the efficiency difference matters less than technique does at that stage.
FIBREGLASS is lighter and more responsive, with a smoother energy return.
CARBON is lightest and most efficient, and is also brittle — a carbon blade struck on rock during a shore entry can break, and it is expensive to replace.
STIFFNESS is matched to the diver's leg strength and to the diving. A blade too stiff is exhausting and produces a poor kick; a blade too soft does not move water. Most manufacturers grade stiffness, and the honest advice is that stiff blades are not a mark of capability.
FOOT POCKETS matter more than most people expect: a pocket that is too loose wastes energy and causes cramp, and one that is too tight restricts circulation and causes cold feet.
Where long fins are the wrong tool
Long fins are unwieldy in three situations worth naming, because the discipline's material rarely mentions them.
SHORE ENTRIES OVER ROCK. A long blade is awkward and vulnerable while a diver is being moved by surge over an uneven surface, and this is where carbon blades break. Many shore divers enter without fins on and fit them in the water, which is a technique worth learning.
CONFINED GROUND. In a gully, a hole or a kelp stand, long fins catch on things.
BOATS. Getting in and out of a small boat in long fins is genuinely difficult and is a common cause of falls.
None of that argues against long fins for the actual diving. It argues for planning the entry and exit separately from the dive, which is a theme running through every part of this vertical: the fishing is rarely the dangerous part.
