Before you spearfish — this comes first
- Get proper instruction before you spearfish. A recognised freediving or spearfishing course teaches the things that actually kill people in this sport, and reading about them is not the same as being taught them.
- Dive with a buddy, and dive one up, one down — one diver in the water, one on the surface watching them, every dive. A breath-hold blackout is silent and gives no warning; a watching buddy is the difference between an incident and a fatality.
- Stay inside your own training and experience. Depth and breath-hold times are personal, they change day to day, and nobody else's numbers apply to you.
- Understand the conditions before you enter the water: visibility, current, swell, tide, boat traffic and your exit. Conditions decide whether a dive is reasonable far more often than skill does.
- Use equipment you have been shown how to use, check it before every session, and be visible — a marked float and line are how boat traffic knows you are there.
- Never extend a dive for a fish. No catch is worth pushing a breath-hold, and the urge to take one more second is exactly what a blackout feels like from the inside — which is to say, like nothing at all.

The urge to breathe is driven by carbon dioxide while unconsciousness is driven by lack of oxygen — two separate signals, which is why breath-hold diving can fail without warning.
Safety
Shallow water blackout and breath-hold loss of consciousness — Can cause serious injury or death
Oxygen falls below the level needed for consciousness while the urge to breathe remains tolerable, most often during the final metres of ascent or at the surface.
What reduces it: Never hyperventilate before a dive. Dive one up, one down. Take surface intervals substantially longer than the dive. Stay within limits established through supervised training rather than by experiment.
Every safety rule in spearfishing follows from one physiological fact, and it is worth understanding rather than memorising.
The urge to breathe is driven mainly by rising carbon dioxide, not by falling oxygen. Those are different variables on different timelines. A diver can therefore reach a dangerously low oxygen level while the urge to breathe is still tolerable, which means the body's warning system is measuring the wrong thing for this purpose.
On top of that, pressure changes the picture. At depth, the partial pressure of oxygen in the lungs is raised by compression, so a diver may feel adequate while deep. During ascent that pressure falls rapidly, and oxygen availability can drop below the level needed for consciousness in the last few metres — which is why blackout clusters around the surface rather than at depth.
This page explains the mechanism. It does not teach techniques for extending breath-hold, and the discipline's safety standards exist precisely because extending it is the wrong objective.
Why the warning is unreliable
Because carbon dioxide drives the urge to breathe and oxygen drives consciousness, the two can decouple. Anything that lowers carbon dioxide before a dive — most notably hyperventilation — delays the urge to breathe without adding meaningful oxygen, which extends the time available before the diver feels compelled to surface and does nothing to extend the time before they lose consciousness.
That is the mechanism behind the standing advice against hyperventilating before a dive. It does not make a diver safer for longer; it removes the signal that would have sent them up.
The mammalian diving response — slowed heart rate, peripheral vasoconstriction, spleen contraction — genuinely does conserve oxygen and is part of why breath-hold diving is possible at all. It is not a safety margin, and treating it as one is how experienced divers get into trouble.

What follows for practice
Three things follow directly, and all three are standing rules rather than preferences.
Dive with a buddy, because the failure is silent and the diver cannot self-rescue. Stay within limits established in training rather than limits discovered by experiment, because the mechanism gives no reliable warning before it fails. And do not hyperventilate, because it removes what warning there is.
A fourth follows less obviously: surface intervals matter. Repeated dives with short recovery accumulate an oxygen debt that the diver does not feel, and the practitioner convention is a surface interval substantially longer than the dive that preceded it.
