Weighting offsets the buoyancy of a wetsuit, and getting it wrong is the difference between an unconscious diver floating to the surface and one that does not.

An overweighted diver who loses consciousness near the surface sinks rather than floats, which removes the buddy's opportunity to reach them.
What reduces it: Weight to be positively buoyant at the shallow end of the dive rather than neutral there. Check weighting in the water under instruction. Keep the belt release accessible with one hand and unobstructed.
Entanglement — Can cause injury needing treatment
A weight belt buckle obstructed by a float line, catch bag or jacket cannot be released when it needs to be.
What reduces it: Check before every entry that the release is reachable and clear, and that the belt cannot rotate the buckle out of reach.
A wetsuit is buoyant, substantially so, and that buoyancy decreases with depth as the neoprene compresses. Weight is added to offset it so a diver can descend without fighting the suit.
The safety consequence sits at the surface rather than at depth. A diver who is correctly weighted is positively buoyant at the surface and near the surface, which means that if they lose consciousness they tend to float rather than sink. A diver who is overweighted is not, and an unconscious overweighted diver goes down.
That is the whole argument, and it explains why the practitioner and training consensus is to be positively buoyant at the shallow end of the dive rather than neutral or negative there. It also explains why the weight belt must be releasable with one hand, quickly, by the diver or by a buddy.
Why a single number cannot be published
Correct weighting depends on suit thickness and material, body composition, the depths being dived, salinity, and what else is being carried. Those vary enough between individuals and sessions that any universal figure would be wrong for most readers, and wrong in the direction that matters — a published number that overweights somebody is a safety failure, not an inconvenience.
So FishingHQ does not publish a formula or a calculator for it. The principle to take away is the direction: err towards being under-weighted rather than over-weighted, because an under-weighted diver works harder and an over-weighted one may not surface.
Weighting is checked in the water, at the depths actually being dived, ideally under instruction. It is one of the specific things a freediving course establishes properly.

Quick release, and why it is not optional
A weight belt must be releasable immediately, with one hand, by a diver who is in difficulty or by a buddy assisting one. That means the buckle faces outward, is not obstructed by other equipment, and is not covered by a jacket, a float line or a catch bag.
The common failure is not a belt without a quick release. It is a quick release that has been made unreachable by everything else the diver is wearing.
A second failure worth naming: belts that ride around the body during a dive so the buckle ends up behind the diver. A belt that fits and is checked before entering the water avoids it.
