Weighting, and the margin that keeps you at the surface

A wetsuit compresses with depth, so a diver weighted to feel comfortable at ten metres is dangerously heavy at the surface — and being positively buoyant at the surface is what keeps an unconscious diver's face out of the water.

An overweighted diver is negatively buoyant at the surface, so a diver who loses consciousness sinks rather than floating, and must work hardest to ascend at the point their oxygen is lowest.

What reduces it: Weighting for positive buoyancy at the surface with full lungs, checking it in the water at the start of a session and whenever suit or water changes, erring light, and a quick-release belt worn over everything.

Weighting is a safety system that happens to make diving easier, and getting it backwards is a documented contributor to freediving fatalities.

A wetsuit is neoprene full of gas bubbles. Under pressure those bubbles compress, the suit thins, and its buoyancy falls. A diver who is comfortably neutral at fifteen metres is therefore strongly POSITIVE at the surface — which is correct — and a diver who is neutral at the surface is strongly NEGATIVE at depth, which means they must work to ascend at exactly the point their oxygen is lowest.

WHY SURFACE BUOYANCY IS THE ONE THAT MATTERS. If a diver blacks out, the question that decides the outcome is whether they float. A positively buoyant diver stays at the surface where a buddy can reach them and where their airway may remain clear. An overweighted diver sinks, and a rescue that would have taken seconds becomes a recovery.

THE PRINCIPLE, NOT A NUMBER. Correct weighting is checked in the water: at the surface, with lungs comfortably full, a diver should float readily; near the end of a normal working depth they should not have to fight to come up. That check accounts for the suit, the diver, the water's salinity and the depth being fished, and no formula does.

Why FishingHQ publishes no weighting calculator

A number is exactly what a reader wants here, and it is the thing that cannot responsibly be given.

The correct weight depends on suit thickness and age, suit fit, neoprene type, body composition, lung volume, fresh or salt water, the depth being fished and the diver's own technique. Two people in identical suits legitimately need different weights. A calculator producing a single figure would carry the authority of arithmetic and the accuracy of a guess, and the failure mode is a diver who is overweighted and believes a tool told them it was safe.

So the guidance here is a procedure and a principle: check buoyancy in the water, at the surface, with a buddy present, at the start of a session and whenever the suit or the water changes. Err light. A diver who is slightly underweighted works harder to descend; a diver who is overweighted may not come up.

The belt must come off in one movement

Whatever the weight, it has to be ditchable — by the diver with one hand, and by a buddy on an unconscious diver in the water.

That means a quick-release buckle that opens under load, worn so that the release is accessible and is not covered by a float line, a catch bag or a knife sheath. It means the belt goes on last, over everything, and comes off first.

A weight belt that has to be unthreaded is not ditchable. Neither is one buried under a harness. This is the sort of detail that is invisible until the one occasion it matters, and on that occasion it decides the outcome.
