Before you spearfish — this comes first

  • Get proper instruction before you spearfish. A recognised freediving or spearfishing course teaches the things that actually kill people in this sport, and reading about them is not the same as being taught them.
  • Dive with a buddy, and dive one up, one down — one diver in the water, one on the surface watching them, every dive. A breath-hold blackout is silent and gives no warning; a watching buddy is the difference between an incident and a fatality.
  • Stay inside your own training and experience. Depth and breath-hold times are personal, they change day to day, and nobody else's numbers apply to you.
  • Understand the conditions before you enter the water: visibility, current, swell, tide, boat traffic and your exit. Conditions decide whether a dive is reasonable far more often than skill does.
  • Use equipment you have been shown how to use, check it before every session, and be visible — a marked float and line are how boat traffic knows you are there.
  • Never extend a dive for a fish. No catch is worth pushing a breath-hold, and the urge to take one more second is exactly what a blackout feels like from the inside — which is to say, like nothing at all.

A small, regionally concentrated practice in an environment that is colder, murkier and more variable than the sea — and one whose legal position differs from marine spearfishing almost everywhere.

Safety

EntanglementCan cause serious injury or death

Submerged timber, weed, discarded line and man-made structure accumulate in inland water and are frequently invisible in poor visibility, creating entanglement and entrapment risk for a diver on a finite breath.

What reduces it: A cutting tool reachable with either hand, avoiding penetration of any structure, shallower and shorter dives in poor visibility, a closer buddy, and not diving flooded workings or structures at all without specific training.

Biosecurity and disease transferCan cause injury needing treatment

Diving equipment carries water, mud and organisms between freshwater sites, and a single introduction of an invasive species or pathogen to a water is permanent.

What reduces it: Checking, cleaning and thoroughly drying all equipment between waters, with drying doing most of the work, and treating it as an obligation rather than a courtesy.

Freshwater spearfishing is a genuine and long-standing activity that most marine spearfishers have never encountered, and the differences run deeper than the salinity.

WHERE IT IS PRACTISED. Substantial traditions exist in parts of the United States — notably for invasive and rough fish species in rivers and reservoirs — in parts of central and eastern Europe, in South America, and in the brackish and near-fresh waters of the Baltic where the fish community mixes marine and freshwater species. It is essentially absent in some countries where marine spearfishing is common.

THE ENVIRONMENT IS HARDER, NOT EASIER.

VISIBILITY is usually the limiting factor and is frequently very poor. Suspended clay, algal bloom, peat staining and stirred silt all reduce it, and a diver's own movement over a soft bottom destroys it instantly and for the rest of the dive.

THERMOCLINES ARE SHARPER in still fresh water than in most seas, and a diver can pass from comfortable surface water into markedly colder water within a metre.

BUOYANCY DIFFERS. Fresh water is less dense than salt, so a diver is less buoyant and needs less lead — a genuinely important point for anybody moving between the two, because carrying a marine weight belt into fresh water is overweighting.

CURRENT AND SNAGS. River diving adds moving water and the specific hazard of submerged timber, which is an entanglement and pinning risk with no marine equivalent.

AND UNDERWATER OBSTRUCTIONS in reservoirs and flooded workings — structures, wire, machinery — that are not visible and not charted.

THE SPECIES ARE DIFFERENT and so is the reasoning about them. Much freshwater spearfishing targets invasive or superabundant species — carp in parts of the United States, catfish, gar — and the conservation argument in those cases resembles the lionfish case rather than the general one. Elsewhere the target species are native, slow-growing and locally significant, and it does not.

Safety differences worth knowing before the first dive

A competent marine spearfisher is not automatically competent in fresh water, and the differences are specific.

BUOYANCY AND WEIGHTING. Less lead than in salt water. A diver who does not adjust is overweighted, which is the condition most associated with freediving fatalities. This is the single most important practical difference.

VISIBILITY AND THE BUDDY. In water where a diver disappears at a metre, surface observation is close to impossible. The response is the same as in any low-visibility diving: shallower, shorter, closer — and an honest acknowledgement that the safety model is degraded.

ENTANGLEMENT AND ENTRAPMENT. Submerged timber, weed beds, discarded line and man-made structure. Fresh water accumulates snags in ways open coast does not.

COLD. Deep lakes are cold year-round below the thermocline regardless of the surface, and the transition is abrupt.

WATER QUALITY. Waterborne infection is a real consideration in fresh water in a way it generally is not at sea — leptospirosis and gastrointestinal illness among others — and cuts, cold sores and ear infections are the usual routes. Anybody diving in fresh water regularly should know the local advice.

BIOSECURITY. Equipment moves water, mud and organisms between waters, and freshwater systems are where introductions do the most damage. Thorough drying is the control that does most of the work, and it is an obligation rather than a courtesy.

AND ACCESS, which is a safety matter as well as a legal one: inland water is frequently owned, and a diver in a place nobody knows they are is a diver nobody will look for.
