Before you spearfish — this comes first
- Get proper instruction before you spearfish. A recognised freediving or spearfishing course teaches the things that actually kill people in this sport, and reading about them is not the same as being taught them.
- Dive with a buddy, and dive one up, one down — one diver in the water, one on the surface watching them, every dive. A breath-hold blackout is silent and gives no warning; a watching buddy is the difference between an incident and a fatality.
- Stay inside your own training and experience. Depth and breath-hold times are personal, they change day to day, and nobody else's numbers apply to you.
- Understand the conditions before you enter the water: visibility, current, swell, tide, boat traffic and your exit. Conditions decide whether a dive is reasonable far more often than skill does.
- Use equipment you have been shown how to use, check it before every session, and be visible — a marked float and line are how boat traffic knows you are there.
- Never extend a dive for a fish. No catch is worth pushing a breath-hold, and the urge to take one more second is exactly what a blackout feels like from the inside — which is to say, like nothing at all.
Shallow-water blackout: what it is, and why it gives no warning

Loss of consciousness from low blood oxygen, occurring most often at or just below the surface on ascent — and the reason it gives no warning is that the sensation people rely on is driven by carbon dioxide rather than by oxygen.

Shallow water blackout and breath-hold loss of consciousness — Can cause serious injury or death
Blood oxygen falls below the level needed for consciousness, most often during ascent or just after surfacing. The diver goes limp with no warning and no struggle, and drowns if their airway is submerged.
What reduces it: A competent buddy observing the ascent and the period after surfacing, adequate surface intervals, no hyperventilation, correct weighting for positive surface buoyancy, and diving well inside trained limits.
The urge to breathe is not an oxygen alarm. It is a carbon dioxide alarm. The body monitors rising CO2 far more sensitively than falling O2, and the discomfort that eventually forces a breath-hold to end is that CO2 signal arriving.
Those two things — the gas that triggers the urge and the gas that keeps you conscious — can come apart, and when they do a diver can be comfortable and hypoxic at the same time. That is the entire mechanism, and everything dangerous about breath-hold diving follows from it.
WHY ASCENT IS THE DANGEROUS PART. At depth, pressure raises the partial pressure of oxygen in the lungs, so a diver may be perfectly conscious at fifteen metres on an oxygen store that would not sustain them at the surface. As they ascend, pressure falls, the partial pressure falls with it, and the available oxygen drops sharply over the last few metres. This is why blackouts cluster near the surface, in shallow water, at the end of a dive that felt fine — and why the name is what it is.
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. Nothing. There is no struggle, no cough and no call. The diver goes limp, and if their airway is below water they drown. A diver watching from the surface sees a person stop moving.
WHAT PRECEDES IT SOMETIMES. Loss of motor control — twitching or shaking, sometimes called the samba — is a hypoxia symptom that can precede blackout. It is not a reliable warning: many blackouts have none at all.
Why the feeling of being fine is not information
The single most dangerous belief in breath-hold diving is that a diver can tell how much oxygen they have left. They cannot, and the physiology explains precisely why.
The contractions and discomfort that build during a breath-hold track carbon dioxide. Oxygen falls on its own schedule, influenced by exertion, cold, depth, how recently the diver last dived, and individual physiology. A diver who is comfortable is a diver whose CO2 is low — which says nothing about their O2.
This is why repeat dives without adequate surface recovery are dangerous in a way that feels safe: oxygen debt accumulates across a session while the subjective experience of each dive stays similar.
And it is why the intuition 'I'll come up when I need to' fails. The need arrives, if it arrives at all, from the wrong gas.

What reduces the risk
A COMPETENT BUDDY, watching, close, through the ascent and after surfacing. This is the only measure that changes the outcome once a blackout has begun, and it is the reason it is first.
ADEQUATE SURFACE INTERVALS. Recovery between dives, longer than the dive itself as a working practice among trained divers, so that oxygen debt does not accumulate through a session.
NOT HYPERVENTILATING. Covered separately, because it is the practice that most directly manufactures this hazard.
CORRECT WEIGHTING, so a diver is positively buoyant at the surface and does not sink if they lose consciousness there.
STAYING WELL INSIDE TRAINED LIMITS, rather than at the edge of them. The margin is what absorbs a bad day, cold water, a long swim or a fish that took longer than expected.
AND STOPPING when tired, cold or unwell. Fatigue, cold and dehydration all shorten the available margin, and none of them announces itself either.

What this page deliberately does not contain
There is nothing here about extending breath-hold time, and there will not be.
The reason is that every technique for holding a breath longer works by moving a diver closer to the hypoxic threshold, and the threshold is the thing that cannot be sensed. Publishing methods to approach it more efficiently, alongside a warning that approaching it is dangerous, would be incoherent.
FishingHQ's position is that breath-hold capability is a by-product of training with a qualified instructor who can observe, measure and stop you — and that it is not a subject for a website. A spearfisher who wants to dive longer should take a course, not read one.
