Before you spearfish — this comes first
- Get proper instruction before you spearfish. A recognised freediving or spearfishing course teaches the things that actually kill people in this sport, and reading about them is not the same as being taught them.
- Dive with a buddy, and dive one up, one down — one diver in the water, one on the surface watching them, every dive. A breath-hold blackout is silent and gives no warning; a watching buddy is the difference between an incident and a fatality.
- Stay inside your own training and experience. Depth and breath-hold times are personal, they change day to day, and nobody else's numbers apply to you.
- Understand the conditions before you enter the water: visibility, current, swell, tide, boat traffic and your exit. Conditions decide whether a dive is reasonable far more often than skill does.
- Use equipment you have been shown how to use, check it before every session, and be visible — a marked float and line are how boat traffic knows you are there.
- Never extend a dive for a fish. No catch is worth pushing a breath-hold, and the urge to take one more second is exactly what a blackout feels like from the inside — which is to say, like nothing at all.
Why hyperventilation before a dive is dangerous

Rapid deep breathing before a breath-hold lowers carbon dioxide without meaningfully raising oxygen — so it delays the urge to breathe while leaving the oxygen supply unchanged, which is precisely the combination that produces blackout without warning.

Lowering carbon dioxide delays the urge to breathe without increasing oxygen, so a diver stays down past the point at which oxygen becomes insufficient and loses consciousness without warning.
What reduces it: Relaxed unforced breathing before a dive rather than rapid deep breathing, training with a recognised body, and a competent buddy observing.
Hyperventilation feels like preparation and functions as a trap.
Blood leaving the lungs is already almost fully saturated with oxygen under normal breathing. Breathing harder and faster cannot add a meaningful amount, because there is very little spare capacity in the haemoglobin to fill. What it does do efficiently is blow off carbon dioxide.
Since the urge to breathe is driven by rising CO2, starting a dive with artificially low CO2 delays that urge — sometimes substantially. The diver feels comfortable for longer. Their oxygen, meanwhile, is falling at the same rate it always would.
So hyperventilation does not buy time. It buys SILENCE: it removes the signal that would have ended the dive while leaving the hazard untouched. The dive ends when oxygen runs out instead of when discomfort arrives, and that ending is unconsciousness.
This is not a marginal effect and it is not disputed. It is the mechanism behind a substantial share of breath-hold fatalities, including among swimmers in pools, and it is why recognised training bodies teach against it explicitly rather than treating it as a matter of style.
What relaxed breathing before a dive is for
Trained freedivers do prepare, and the preparation is the opposite of hyperventilation.
Slow, relaxed, unforced breathing lowers heart rate and reduces oxygen consumption before the dive begins. The aim is to start with a low metabolic rate rather than with a depleted CO2 level, and the difference is not subtle: one reduces the rate at which oxygen is used, the other removes the alarm.
Recognised training teaches this distinction directly, and it is one of the clearest reasons a course is worth more than any amount of reading — the difference between relaxed breathing and mild hyperventilation is hard to judge from the inside and easy for an instructor to see.
What this page will not offer is a breathing routine. Prescribing one in text, to a reader nobody is observing, is the same category of error as prescribing a breath-hold target.

Where the folk practice comes from
Hyperventilation is widespread among self-taught spearfishers, and the reason is that it works in the short term at the thing the diver is measuring.
Somebody who hyperventilates does stay down longer and does feel more comfortable doing it. The feedback is immediate, positive and entirely misleading, because the cost is invisible and is paid only occasionally — on the dive where the oxygen runs out first.
That structure, where a dangerous practice produces reliable short-term reward and rare catastrophic failure, is the hardest kind of habit to argue somebody out of. It is why this page leads with the mechanism rather than the instruction: 'don't do that' loses to twenty successful dives, and 'it removes your warning without adding air' does not.
