Holding position: anchoring and drifting from a kayak

Anchoring a kayak in current is the most dangerous ordinary thing a kayak angler does, and the equipment that makes it survivable is a trolley and a knife rather than a better anchor.

A kayak anchored so that the line comes off the side in a tidal stream trips over its own anchor line and capsizes, quickly and with little warning. The paddler is then in moving water attached to a fixed point, which is a materially worse situation than an ordinary capsize.

What reduces it: Use an anchor trolley so the craft can be held bow or stern into the flow and re-set as the tide turns. Fit a quick release at the trolley ring, carry a knife on the person reachable with either hand from the seat, and prefer a drogue to an anchor wherever the fishing allows — a drogue slows a drift without fixing the boat and removes the failure mode entirely.

Worse when:

  • Spring tides and any hard-running stream.
  • Wind against the tide, where the craft is being pushed one way and held the other.
  • Anchoring alone, where nobody is watching and nobody can assist.

Anchor line, leashes, landing-net cord and fishing line are all in the water around a capsized kayak, and a person in the water among them can be held under or held to the craft.

What reduces it: Carry a knife on the person — on the buoyancy aid, reachable with either hand — rather than in a hatch. Keep leashes as short as the job allows and keep loose line off the deck.

A kayak that is not being propelled is moving, because wind and tide are both acting on it continuously. Fishing from one therefore means either accepting the drift and working with it, or holding position — and holding position is where the risk is.

WHY ANCHORING IS THE DANGEROUS ONE. Tie an anchor line to the bow or stern of a kayak in a tidal stream and the craft lies head- or stern-to the flow, which is stable and correct. Tie it to the side, or let the boat swing so the line comes off the side, and the current pushes against the whole length of the hull while the line holds it. The kayak trips over its own anchor line and goes over, and it goes over fast, and the paddler is then in moving water attached to a fixed point. This is the capsize mechanism that most often turns into something serious.

THE ANCHOR TROLLEY IS A SAFETY DEVICE. It is a loop of line running along one side of the kayak through pulleys at bow and stern, with a ring on it that the anchor line clips to. Pulling the trolley moves the attachment point to the bow or the stern, so the boat can be made to lie the right way to the flow and kept there as the tide turns. It is sold as a convenience and it is not one.

EVERY ANCHORED KAYAK CARRIES A MEANS OF INSTANT RELEASE. A quick-release clip on the trolley ring, and a knife accessible with either hand from the seated position, on the person rather than in a hatch. The decision to cut is made in seconds and the anchor is worth nothing.

AND THE MOST USEFUL ADVICE ABOUT ANCHORING IS TO DO IT LESS. Most kayak fishing does not need it. A drogue — a small sea anchor streamed off the bow or stern — slows a drift without fixing the boat to the seabed, keeps the craft correctly oriented, and cannot capsize it. It is the right answer far more often than an anchor is, and it removes the entire failure mode. Pedal drives make small corrections trivial, and a controlled drift over ground is a better presentation than a static position for most lure and bait fishing anyway.

Strong tidal flow plus anchoring plus a kayak is a combination with a bad record. Where the tide is running hard, the honest position is that the water is telling you to drift it rather than to hold in it.

Anchoring in tide is the thing that capsizes kayaks

Anchoring a kayak is not a smaller version of anchoring a boat. It is the specific manoeuvre most likely to put a fishing kayak upside down, and the mechanism is worth understanding rather than memorising.

A KAYAK ANCHORED SIDE-ON TO A CURRENT IS BEING PULLED OVER. Water pushing against the length of the hull, with the anchor line holding the middle of it, rolls the craft towards the current. The upstream gunwale goes down, water comes over it, and the whole thing happens in a second or two with no warning worth the name. Tide does not have to be fast: a knot of stream against a loaded kayak is enough.

SO THE CRAFT MUST LIE BOW OR STERN TO THE FLOW. That is the entire purpose of an anchor trolley: a loop of line running along the side of the kayak that lets the attachment point be slid to the bow or the stern from the cockpit, so the craft weathercocks into the current instead of across it.

AND THE RELEASE HAS TO BE INSTANT. Everything about an anchor system is designed around getting rid of it: a quick-release cleat or clip reachable without leaning, a float on the anchor line so it can be dropped and recovered later, and a knife where it can be reached with either hand. If the choice is between losing an anchor and capsizing, it is not a choice.

WHICH IS WHY DRIFTING IS OFTEN THE BETTER ANSWER. A drogue — a fabric cone streamed from bow or stern — slows and steadies a drift without fixing the kayak to the seabed at all, and it removes the failure mode entirely. It does not hold position; it makes the drift usable, which is what most kayak fishing actually needs. Wind against tide is the case where a drogue earns its place most obviously, because it stops the craft being blown across the flow.

AND THE HONEST DEFAULT FOR A NEW KAYAK ANGLER is to drift, and to learn anchoring later, deliberately, in slack water, with somebody watching. Nothing about holding position is worth learning by discovering how it goes wrong.
