Electronics on a fishing kayak

A wet, tipping, single-battery platform with no spare of anything. Electronics here are a rigging problem and a power problem before they are a fishing one, and the safety-critical device is the one that summons help rather than the one that finds fish.

Fish finders, chartplotters and phones all work perfectly well on a kayak, and this is a subject at all because the platform breaks three assumptions the equipment was designed around.

THE FIRST IS THAT THE INSTALLATION STAYS THE RIGHT WAY UP. A kayak may capsize, and everything mounted on it will then be submerged, upside down, in moving water. That changes the specification from water-resistant to genuinely immersion-tolerant, it means every mount has to hold under load rather than merely hold, and it means anything that would be lost is leashed or accepted as expendable. A screen torn off its mount in a surf landing is an ordinary event rather than an unlucky one.

THE SECOND IS THAT POWER IS AVAILABLE. A boat has an engine, an alternator and usually more than one battery. A kayak has one small battery, no way of charging it and no way of diagnosing it afloat. The electronics budget is therefore finite and known before launching, and a battery never tested under load in the cold is an assumption rather than a resource — capacity falls with temperature, which is exactly when the days are shortest and running out matters most.

THE THIRD IS THAT THE INSTALLATION CAN BE REACHED. Anything in a hatch is unreachable once loaded and afloat, and anything needing two hands means putting the paddle down. Wiring is done once, on the assumption it will not be touched again afloat.

THE TRANSDUCER IS THE ONE GENUINELY KAYAK-SPECIFIC PROBLEM. It must contact the water without adding the draught a kayak exists to avoid and without becoming a snag, and each mounting trades something: through the hull is protected and loses signal quality; a scupper mount adds a fixed protrusion below the hull; an arm over the side is removable and most exposed. Launching through surf argues strongly for nothing sticking out.

WHAT THE ELECTRONICS ARE FOR IS WORTH BEING HONEST ABOUT. A sounder shows depth, ground and what is directly beneath a very small boat — useful on featureless ground and for finding drop-offs, reef edges and channels. It does not tell you where to go, and a kayak covers ground slowly enough that searching by sounder is a poor use of a limited day. Many productive sessions involve no electronics at all.

NAVIGATION IS WHERE IT BECOMES A SAFETY SUBJECT. A GPS position is genuinely valuable in fog, at night, and where the shore looks the same for kilometres — but navigating by a device sharing a battery with a fish finder, on a platform where nothing recharges, is a plan with a single point of failure. A paddler who cannot find the launch without a screen has not planned the trip.

AND THE LAST POINT IS THE ONE THE WHOLE VERTICAL KEEPS RETURNING TO. None of this shortens the time help takes to arrive, makes cold water survivable, or changes what an offshore wind will do. Equipment makes a good decision easier to act on and does not make a bad one safer, and a kayak fitted out to the last accessory is as exposed to a poor launch decision as a bare one.

Power budgeting, and the number worth working out on the bank

The single most useful piece of preparation for kayak electronics is arithmetic done at home, and almost nobody does it.

A KAYAK HAS ONE BATTERY AND NO WAY OF KNOWING WHAT IS LEFT IN IT. Unlike a boat, there is no charging, no second bank and generally no meaningful state-of-charge display. So the only reliable approach is to establish, before the trip, roughly how long the installed equipment runs on a fully charged battery, and to treat that figure as the trip's electrical limit.

THE FIGURE MOVES WITH TEMPERATURE AND IT MOVES THE WRONG WAY. Battery capacity falls in the cold, and cold days are short days on exposed water — so the season that shortens the runtime is the season in which running out matters most. A capacity established in July is optimistic in January.

AND IT DEGRADES WITH AGE SILENTLY. A battery that has been through a couple of seasons of partial charging holds noticeably less than its rating, and nothing on a kayak will tell you that until the screen goes off.

THE PRACTICAL RESPONSE IS SEPARATION RATHER THAN CAPACITY. Anything safety-relevant — a hand-held VHF, a locator device, a phone in a case — runs on its own power, is charged independently, and is carried on the person rather than wired into the boat. Then a flat main battery costs a fish finder and nothing else. Wiring a communications device into the same battery as a sounder is the arrangement to avoid, and it is a common one.

SWITCHING OFF IS AN UNDERUSED TOOL. A sounder does not need to run continuously; used to check depth and ground at intervals it lasts several times longer, and on most kayak ground it adds little when it is running all day.

WATERPROOFING THE BATTERY COMPARTMENT IS NOT OPTIONAL AND IT IS FREQUENTLY THE WEAK POINT. A sealed battery box with a gland for the cable, rather than a battery loose in a hatch, is the arrangement that survives an inversion — and the connections rather than the battery are almost always what fails first in salt water.

Carried on the person, not fitted to the boat

There is one rule in kayak electronics with a genuine safety argument behind it, and it has nothing to do with what the equipment does.

ANYTHING NEEDED AFTER A CAPSIZE MUST BE ON THE PADDLER. A kayak separated from its occupant takes everything fitted to it with it, and a kayak upside down in surf takes everything in its hatches. A VHF in a hatch, a phone in a deck bag, a locator beacon clipped to a rail — each of those is unavailable in exactly the circumstance it exists for. The equipment that matters goes in a buoyancy aid pocket or on a tether to the person.

WHICH RESHAPES THE WHOLE EQUIPMENT DECISION. It means a small, robust, waterproof, floating hand-held device is a better choice than a larger and more capable one that will not fit in a pocket, and it means a fixed installation is a convenience rather than a safety measure however good it is.

A MOBILE TELEPHONE IS NOT A MARINE COMMUNICATIONS DEVICE and should not be treated as the primary one. Coverage offshore is unreliable and directional, a wet capacitive touchscreen frequently cannot be operated, cold hands make it worse, and a call to a single number reaches one place rather than every vessel within range. It is worth carrying, in a case, as a secondary means. It is not a plan.

A HAND-HELD VHF IS THE DEVICE WITH THE STRONGEST ARGUMENT, because it is heard by nearby vessels and by the shore station simultaneously, works where there is no cellular coverage, and is designed to be used wet. Carrying one implies knowing how to use it, which is a short piece of learning that people postpone indefinitely. Licensing and operator requirements for marine radio vary by country and are a matter for the relevant national authority; FishingHQ does not state what any of them are.

A PERSONAL LOCATOR BEACON OR SIMILAR DEVICE is a further layer, and the honest framing is that it shortens the search rather than the response. It does not reduce the time spent in the water before help arrives, which is the quantity cold water actually cares about.

AND NONE OF IT ALTERS THE LAUNCH DECISION. The whole point of the kayak vertical's safety posture is that equipment buys time and margin and does not create permission, and the paddler who reasons that a beacon makes a marginal day acceptable has used the equipment to make a worse decision than they would have made without it.
