Fishing rough ground, and what it costs

Rock, reef and kelp hold the most fish and take the most tackle. The technique is entirely organised around losing gear cheaply and deliberately, and the environmental cost of doing it badly is real.
ROUGH GROUND IS WHERE THE FISH ARE, and the reason is structural: hard substrate supports attached life, attached life supports invertebrates, invertebrates support fish, and the broken structure gives everything somewhere to hide. Clean sand cannot compete with it.
IT IS ALSO WHERE TACKLE GOES. Every cast risks a lead wedged in a crevice, a hook in kelp, or a line drawn across an edge. The whole craft is a response to that.
THE ROTTEN BOTTOM IS THE CENTRAL IDEA. The lead is attached to the rig by a length of line deliberately weaker than everything else — often much weaker. When the lead jams, that link breaks, and you recover the rig, the hooks and the fish. You lose one lead instead of a whole rig, and critically, a fish hooked when the lead jams is not tethered to the bottom. This is a welfare mechanism as much as an economy.
WHAT ELSE THE GROUND CHANGES.
LEAD SHAPE. Smooth, round or bomb-shaped leads with no wires, because anything that can catch will catch. Wires are for sand.
HOOKLENGTHS SHORT AND STRONG. Long flowing traces find kelp. A short trace keeps the bait close to a known position and reduces what can wrap.
RETRIEVE STYLE. Start winding immediately and keep the rod high, so the rig lifts and planes over the ground rather than dragging through it. Most rough-ground losses happen in the first few seconds of the retrieve.
HEAVIER MAIN LINE AND LEADER than the fish require, because the line is being cut rather than pulled.
AND ACCEPTING THE ARITHMETIC. Anybody fishing rough ground properly loses leads. Somebody losing none is fishing the clean patch and catching accordingly.
THE ENVIRONMENTAL COST IS NOT INCIDENTAL. Every lost lead is lead in the marine environment. Every lost rig is monofilament that persists for years on ground where diving birds and fish feed, and lost gear on reef and kelp accumulates precisely because that is where tackle is lost. Rough-ground fishing done carelessly is one of the more concentrated ways recreational angling leaves gear behind.
WHAT REDUCES IT, and none of it is difficult. Use the rotten bottom so that the thing left behind is a lead rather than a rig with three baited hooks. Break off deliberately at the weak link rather than pulling for a straight break that leaves metres of line. Retrieve what floats free. Take waste line home. And consider non-lead alternatives where they are available for the weight and shape needed, which is increasingly the case and in some places is a requirement rather than an option.
