Weather windows in sea fishing

A weather window is a period in which conditions are workable rather than merely forecast, and reading one means understanding wind, swell, tide and their interactions rather than a single number.

Every maritime nation issues graded marine forecasts, and every one of them exists because the sea changes faster than people expect and with consequences that do not scale gently.

A usable reading of a forecast covers four things.

WIND, which produces local waves. Wind speed matters, but so does duration and fetch — how long it has been blowing and over what distance of open water. A fresh wind that has just started produces a very different sea from the same wind after a day.

SWELL, which is separate and is the variable most often ignored. Swell is wave energy generated by distant weather and travelling far beyond it, so a long-period swell can arrive under a clear sky and a light breeze. Swell is what makes rock marks lethal in apparently benign conditions and what closes harbour bars.

SEA STATE, which is the combination as it presents. Forecast wave heights are conventionally SIGNIFICANT wave heights — an average of the larger waves rather than a maximum — and individual waves substantially higher occur routinely. Reading a significant wave height as a maximum is the single commonest misreading of a marine forecast.

AND THE INTERACTION WITH TIDE. Wind blowing against a tidal stream steepens and shortens waves dramatically, and a passage or a piece of ground that is comfortable on one state of tide can be dangerous on the other in identical wind. Wind over tide is the specific condition that turns a forecast that looked fine into a trip that was not.

What the forecasters actually issue

Marine forecasts are structured by zone and by lead time. Coastal or inshore products cover a band close to the shore and are the relevant ones for shore anglers and small boats; offshore and high-seas products cover the rest.

Warnings are graded, and the grades are defined by wind speed thresholds rather than by judgement. The names differ between countries — a small craft advisory, a gale warning, a storm warning — but the structure is common: a tier that says conditions are hazardous for small vessels, and tiers above it that escalate.

Wave height in a forecast is a significant wave height. Visibility and sea state are separately defined scales.

The practical instruction is to learn the local product rather than to translate a foreign one. Two national forecasters are cited here deliberately, because the point that generalises is that a graded system exists everywhere and the angler's job is to know which one applies where they are.

And a forecast is a probability rather than a promise. The window is the period over which the forecast is confident, and confidence falls with lead time.

Judging a window rather than a moment

The mistake that produces most incidents is planning around the best hour rather than the worst one.

A window has to cover the whole trip including the return, and the return is when conditions are typically worse: wind builds through the day in many coastal regimes, the tide turns, and the crew is tired.

It has to allow for something going wrong. A window with no margin is a plan that fails if the engine needs an hour of attention.

And it has to account for what the conditions do to the specific ground. A swell that is irrelevant offshore breaks heavily on a shallow bar; a wind direction that is offshore and comfortable at the beach is the one that takes an inflatable out to sea.

For shore anglers the equivalent discipline is to check the swell as well as the wind, to know what the tide will do to access during the session, and to treat a rising sea as a reason to leave rather than as an interesting development.

The judgement improves with local knowledge, and local knowledge is the one input a forecast cannot supply.

Weather as a fishing variable, separately

Conditions decide safety first and fishing second, and the second is worth stating because it is where the folklore lives.

What is reasonably well grounded: onshore wind and surf colour the water and stir food, which is why many shore fisheries are better in a blow than in a flat calm; wind pushes surface water and the plankton in it, which concentrates food downwind; and a settled spell allows sediment to drop out and clarity to rise, which changes which methods suit.

What is not settled: whether barometric pressure itself predicts feeding, a question with a large practitioner literature and weak evidence, treated in its own record.

The two should not be confused. A decision to go is a safety judgement. A decision about what to fish once there is a conditions judgement. Reversing the order is how people end up on a rock mark in a swell because the fishing is supposed to be good in one.
