Weather fronts, and what can honestly be said

Anglers are certain that pressure affects fishing and the controlled evidence is thin. What is well supported is that fronts change light, wind, temperature and water — and those are enough to explain most of it.
Barometric pressure is the subject where practitioner conviction and controlled evidence diverge most sharply in all of angling, and the honest treatment is to separate them rather than to pick a side.
WHAT IS WELL SUPPORTED. A fish's swim bladder is a gas-filled organ, and fish are demonstrably sensitive to pressure change — they have to be, because moving up and down in the water column changes pressure far more than any weather system does. A metre of depth change alters pressure more than a substantial barometric swing.
THAT IS THE STRONGEST ARGUMENT AGAINST THE FOLKLORE, and it deserves stating: the pressure change a fish experiences swimming a metre deeper dwarfs the change a passing front produces at the surface. Any mechanism by which weather pressure alone drives feeding has to explain why so much larger a change from depth does not.
WHAT THE CONTROLLED EVIDENCE SHOWS IS LIMITED AND MIXED. Studies looking for relationships between barometric pressure and catch rates have produced inconsistent results, and where effects are found they are frequently small and confounded with the other things weather does.
AND THOSE OTHER THINGS ARE SUBSTANTIAL. A front arriving brings cloud, which changes light. It brings wind, which moves food and breaks the surface. It brings rain, which colours water and raises rivers. It changes air and then water temperature. Any one of those has a well-understood effect on fish behaviour, and all of them arrive together with the pressure change.
SO THE PRACTITIONER OBSERVATION IS PROBABLY REAL AND THE EXPLANATION PROBABLY WRONG. Anglers who report that fishing is good ahead of a front and poor after one are describing something they have seen repeatedly, and the likely cause is the falling light and rising wind before, and the cold, bright, still, high-pressure conditions after.
FISHINGHQ'S POSITION IS THEREFORE PRECISE. Do not dismiss the observation; do not repeat the mechanism as fact. Fish the conditions the front brings — light, wind, water colour, temperature — because those are legible and their effects are understood, and treat the barometer as a proxy for them rather than as a cause in itself.
AND THE SAME REASONING APPLIES TO MOON PHASE, which correlates strongly with tide and with night light level, both of which have clear mechanisms, and which is frequently credited with effects those two adequately explain.
What to do with a forecast, given how little the front itself tells you
The record above is largely about what cannot be claimed. That leaves a practical question unanswered: a front is coming, so what should change? The honest answer is that a front is useful as a PREDICTOR OF OTHER CONDITIONS, and those other conditions are the ones worth acting on.
A FRONT IS A PACKAGE, AND THE PACKAGE IS WHERE THE MECHANISMS ARE. What arrives with it is a wind shift, usually a wind increase, cloud, rain, and a temperature change. Every one of those has a documented effect on fishing that does not depend on pressure at all — wind moves surface food and stacks it on a shore, cloud changes light penetration, rain changes river level and oxygen, and temperature change alters activity. An angler who plans around those four is acting on mechanisms rather than on folklore, and gets most of the practical benefit the pressure story claims.
WHICH DISSOLVES MOST OF THE ARGUMENT. 'Fishing is good before a front' and 'fishing is poor after one' are, in the cases where they hold, usually descriptions of a rising wind with cloud before, and a cold clear windless high after. Those are two very different fishing days described by their barometry rather than by what actually changed.
SO THE PRACTICAL SEQUENCE IS TO READ THE FORECAST FOR ITS COMPONENTS. What will the wind be doing, and from where. Will there be cloud. Will it rain enough to move a river. Is the air mass warmer or colder than the water. Those four have answers; 'is the pressure falling' has an answer that does not connect to anything reliable.
THE ONE THING A FRONT PREDICTS WITH CERTAINTY IS THE WEATHER ITSELF, and that is a safety input rather than a fishing one. An approaching front means wind, poor visibility and — on the active ones — thunderstorms, and that is the part of the story where the mechanism is not in dispute at all. A carbon rod on an open bank is the tallest conductive object in the landscape.
AND THE HONEST POSITION ON A GOOD DAY THAT FOLLOWED A FALLING BAROMETER is that it was a good day. The record's argument is not that experienced anglers are imagining their results; it is that the barometer is the least likely of the several things that changed at the same time to have been the cause, and that a variable which correlates with four others cannot be separated by noticing it.
