Wind, and where it puts the food

Wind moves the surface layer downwind, and everything floating in it goes too — which is why the uncomfortable bank is usually the productive one.
Wind is the condition anglers most often get backwards, because comfort and productivity point in opposite directions.
WIND DRIVES A SURFACE CURRENT. Sustained wind pushes the top layer of water downwind, and anything suspended in that layer — plankton, terrestrial insects blown in, small food items, larval fish — is carried with it. It accumulates against the downwind shore.
SO THE FOOD ENDS UP ON THE WINDWARD BANK, meaning the bank the wind is blowing into. That is the uncomfortable one to stand on and to cast from, and it is usually where the fish are. The old advice to fish into the wind is a real observation with a real mechanism, and it is why experienced anglers on a stillwater walk to the wrong-looking end.
A RETURN CURRENT RUNS BACK ALONG THE BOTTOM, which is why deeper water off a windward shore can also concentrate fish and food.
WIND ALSO BREAKS THE SURFACE, and a chop does two things: it reduces the light reaching the fish, which shifts the predator-prey balance in the predator's favour, and it hides the angler. A flat calm bright day is frequently the hardest condition in fresh water, and a good ripple the easiest.
AND IT MIXES OXYGEN IN, which matters enormously in warm weather. A wind-blown shore in a heatwave may be the only comfortable water in a lake.
ON THE COAST THE WIND DOES SOMETHING DIFFERENT AGAIN. An onshore wind pushes surf onto a beach, colouring the water and stirring food out of the sand — which is why a moderate onshore blow is the classic surf beach condition. But wind against tide steepens the sea sharply and is a safety condition rather than a fishing one, and it is the single most important thing a small-boat angler reads.
AND THERE IS A LIMIT. Enough wind stops the fishing by making presentation impossible, colours the water beyond usefulness, and makes exposed ground dangerous. The useful range is a ripple to a moderate blow, and beyond that the wind stops being a variable and becomes a constraint.
Winds with names, and why a named wind is a different planning problem
Everything above treats wind as a variable that changes from day to day. Across a large part of Europe it is better understood as a recurring EVENT with a name, a direction, a duration and a known set of consequences — and planning around a named wind is a different exercise from reading a forecast.
WHY THEY GET NAMED. A wind acquires a local name where the topography produces it repeatedly from the same direction with the same character, so that everybody who works on the water needs a single word for a whole set of expectations. That is a signal worth reading: if the wind has a name, it is frequent, it is strong and the consequences are understood.
THE MELTEMI is the northerly of the Aegean summer. It blows hard, dry and for days at a time, and it decides what is possible on a given day in that sea more completely than weather does in most places. Its consequence is directional: a small craft that ran downwind in the morning may not be able to return.
THE MISTRAL AND THE TRAMUNTANA blow offshore in the Gulf of Lion and off the Catalan coast — cold, dry, violent and persistent. The offshore direction is the dangerous part, because a craft in trouble is being pushed away from the coast rather than towards it, and because the water inshore can look deceptively sheltered while the sea a few kilometres out is not.
THE BORA descends from the mountains behind the Adriatic as a gusty cold north-easterly that can arrive within minutes, raise a short vicious sea in water that was calm, and catch a boat mid-crossing in an archipelago with long gaps between shelter.
AND THE ALPINE AND PRE-ALPINE LAKE WINDS run on a daily cycle rather than a weather one, getting up and dropping at roughly the same times, which makes them predictable and makes people complacent about the thunderstorm gusts that do not follow the cycle at all.
WHAT THIS CHANGES FOR THE FISHING. The food-and-edges mechanism above is unaltered: a wind that has been pushing water onto a shore for two days has put food there and the fish know it. What changes is the PLANNING. In a place with a named wind, the question is not what the wind is doing now but what it has been doing, how long it is forecast to last, and whether the day can be finished if it arrives early.
