Reservoir fishing and depth

A deep engineered water hides its features under the surface and stratifies in summer, which turns 'where are the fish' into a vertical question before it is a horizontal one.
A RESERVOIR IS A LARGE, DEEP, ENGINEERED WATER, and the two properties that make it difficult are that its structure is invisible and that its water column is not uniform.
THE STRUCTURE IS UNDERWATER AND IT IS THE OLD LANDSCAPE. A valley reservoir drowned a valley: the old river channel runs along the bottom, with old field boundaries, walls, hedge lines, roads and sometimes buildings still in place. Those are the features, and they are as productive as any feature on any water. Finding them is the whole game, and the ways to do it are: a bathymetric chart or old map if one exists, an echo sounder, watching the water level fall in a dry summer to expose the topography, and inference from the visible bank contours continuing under the surface.
THE WATER COLUMN STRATIFIES IN SUMMER. A deep water in warm weather forms a warm surface layer over a cold dense bottom layer, separated by a narrow zone of rapid temperature change. In a strongly stratified water the bottom layer becomes progressively depleted of oxygen through the season, which means the deepest water is not merely cold — it may be uninhabitable. Fish concentrate at and above the transition, which is why finding that depth matters more than finding a spot.
STRATIFICATION BREAKS DOWN in autumn as the surface cools and the water mixes, which reoxygenates the depths and redistributes the fish completely. That turnover is abrupt, it can produce a period of very poor fishing while it happens, and it is followed by the fish becoming available at depths they had not used for months.
AND THE LEVEL CHANGES, BECAUSE IT IS A WATER SUPPLY. Drawdown in a dry summer can expose large areas, concentrate fish, and put the productive margin somewhere entirely different from where it was in spring. Refilling does the reverse. A reservoir is one of the few fisheries whose physical extent changes substantially within a season, and the fishing follows it.
HOW TO WORK IT PRACTICALLY. Establish the depth profile before choosing a method. Fish the transition depth rather than the bottom in high summer. Follow the drawdown line. Treat wind as the other main variable, because on a large open water it moves the surface layer, the food and the fish downwind, and the windward bank is frequently the wrong bank.
Drawdown is the variable that replaces the tide
On a regulated reservoir the water level is not a constant with weather noise on it. It is an output of a control room, and across the Iberian, Alpine, Nordic and central European reservoir systems the vertical movement through a year can be very large indeed.
WHICH MAKES IT THE FUNCTIONAL EQUIVALENT OF A TIDE, and the analogy is worth taking seriously because it transfers real technique. Ground that was dry is covered and immediately productive, because the material stranded on it is available for the first time. Ground that was productive is left dry and the fish that used it have moved. The margin — the transition between the two — is where fish work, exactly as on a flooding shore.
AND IT IS NOT A TIDE IN THE ONE WAY THAT MATTERS MOST. There is no table. The level responds to power demand, irrigation demand, flood-storage policy and rainfall in a catchment that may be a long way away, and it can move at night and in clear weather. A reader who knows a reservoir's level today knows nothing reliable about tomorrow's without asking its operator.
DRAWDOWN ALSO EXPOSES WHAT IS UNDERNEATH, which is a genuine advantage for anybody willing to look. A reservoir at low water shows its old river channel, its walls, its standing timber, its road beds and its field boundaries — the structure that will be invisible and productive when the water returns. A photograph taken in a drought is a chart.
THE HAZARD IS THE SAME EXPOSURE. Drawn-down margins are steep, unstable and deeply soft, they can be many metres below the vegetation line, and somebody who walks out onto one at low water can be unable to climb back. Rising water can cut off a bank that was walkable. Standing timber and submerged structure that are useful features to fish are hazards to a boat.
AND THE COLDEST WATER IS FREQUENTLY LEAVING FROM THE BOTTOM. A reservoir with a low-level outlet discharges cold, oxygen-poor, clear water into the river below it, which changes that river's temperature regime and its fishery for a considerable distance — one of the clearest cases in fresh water of a fishery being an engineering decision.
