Night fishing with lures

After dark vision stops being the dominant sense for both the fish and the angler, and lure choice changes for a reason rather than by convention: what the fish is detecting is displacement and silhouette rather than detail.
Safety
Slips, trips and falls — Can cause serious injury or death
Ground that is straightforward in daylight becomes hazardous in darkness. Weed-covered rock, sudden drops, soft mud and the edges of piers and platforms are all invisible, and a fall into water at night, alone, is very frequently fatal.
What reduces it: Walk any mark in daylight before fishing it at night, fish with somebody else, carry more than one light source, wear a buoyancy aid on any elevated or steep mark, and tell somebody where you are and when you will be back.

- Fishing alone, and fatigue late in a session
WHAT ACTUALLY CHANGES AT NIGHT. Light falls far below the level at which colour vision operates in most fish, and detail resolution collapses long before detection does. What remains available to a predator is: SILHOUETTE against whatever light there is above, DISPLACEMENT sensed by the lateral line, and SOUND. So a lure at night is being found by feel and seen, if at all, as a shape against the sky.
WHAT FOLLOWS FOR LURE CHOICE, and each of these has a mechanism behind it rather than a tradition.
STRONGER ACTION AND MORE DISPLACEMENT. A lure that pushes water is findable. This is why broad-lipped plugs, thumping paddle-tails and large-bladed lures earn their place after dark, and why a subtle finesse presentation that works in daylight can go untouched.
SLOWER RETRIEVES. A fish hunting by displacement has to close on a target it cannot see clearly, and a lure travelling fast gives it no time. Night retrieves are typically slower than the same angler's daytime retrieves, sometimes considerably.
SURFACE AND SUB-SURFACE PRESENTATIONS BECOME MORE PRODUCTIVE, because a lure worked at or near the surface is the one silhouetted against the sky, and because a surface disturbance is a strong displacement signal. A great deal of night lure fishing is shallower than the daytime equivalent.
DARK LURES, WHICH SOUNDS BACKWARDS AND IS NOT. A fish looking up at a lure sees it against a comparatively lighter surface, so a dark, solid silhouette is the most visible thing available. Black and dark purple have a long-standing reputation in night fishing for exactly this reason, and the optical argument is sound even though the comparative field evidence is thin.
GLOW AND LIGHT, treated honestly. Luminous finishes and attached lights are widely used, they clearly do something in some fisheries — squid fishing being the strongest case — and there is little controlled evidence about when they help and when they alert. Where lights are used to attract fish there are also places where their use is restricted.
AND THE PART THAT IS ABOUT THE ANGLER RATHER THAN THE FISH. Night lure fishing means casting treble hooks in the dark, moving over ground you cannot see, and unhooking fish by torchlight. Almost every account of a bad night's fishing turns out to be a hazard account rather than a catching one. Ground should be walked in daylight before it is fished in darkness, and that is not advice about catching.
Choosing a lure for water the fish cannot see far into either
Night lure fishing is usually explained as a matter of using dark lures against the sky, which is one true thing stated as though it were the whole method. The useful frame is that vision has stopped being the dominant sense and something else has to do the work.
WHAT THE FISH IS ACTUALLY USING. In darkness a predator relies far more on the lateral line — an array that detects water displacement and pressure change at close range — and on hearing, which in water is effective over greater distances than most people assume. Vision does not switch off, and many predators see considerably better in low light than a human does, but the range at which it operates collapses.
SO THE LURE HAS TO BE FINDABLE BEFORE IT HAS TO BE CONVINCING. That reorders everything. A lure that pushes water, rattles, thumps or swims with a wide slow action is broadcasting to the sense that is working. A subtle, tight-actioned, natural-looking lure is optimised for a sense that is not.
WHICH IS WHY SLOWER IS ALMOST ALWAYS RIGHT. A fish locating by displacement needs time to track and intercept, and a lure retrieved at daylight speed is gone before it has been found. This is the single change that most improves night lure fishing and it is the one that feels least productive while doing it.
SURFACE LURES ARE UNUSUALLY EFFECTIVE AT NIGHT and the reason is geometric as well as acoustic: a lure on the surface is silhouetted against whatever light there is, it disturbs the surface film continuously, and the fish is looking up at the one part of the water column with any contrast in it. It is also where the take is most spectacular, which is why the technique has a following out of proportion to how much of the night it works.
AND THE COLOUR ARGUMENT IS NARROWER THAN IT SOUNDS. Black is recommended for night fishing because a black object silhouettes best against a marginally lighter sky, and that is a contrast argument rather than a colour one — it applies to a lure fished at or near the surface and applies very little to one fished deep. `lure-colour-and-water` covers the general case.
THE PRACTICAL CHANGES THAT MATTER MOST HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE LURE. Fish water you have walked in daylight. Reduce the number of hooks. Use a heavier leader than you would by day, because you cannot see a snag coming and cannot inspect the line easily. And accept that you will fish more slowly, cover less water, and lose more tackle — which is the actual cost of the method.
