When conditions turn during a session

Conditions deteriorate faster than divers notice, because the diver is absorbed, cold and progressively less capable of judging — which is why the decision is agreed on land before anybody has anything invested.

Conditions deteriorate gradually while the diver's ability to judge them is being reduced by cold, fatigue and absorption, and the exit becomes impossible while they are still fishing.

What reduces it: Agreeing abort conditions on land before arriving, identifying the exit and a second one before entering, checking periodically whether the exit could still be made, and an agreement that either buddy can end the session without justification.

Every condition in this family can change during a session, and the diver is the person least well placed to notice.

WHY. Absorption in hunting, cold reducing judgement, fatigue accumulating, and the simple fact that change is gradual and the reference point moves with it. A diver two hours into a session is comparing the water to how it was ten minutes ago rather than to how it was when they got in.

WHAT TURNS, AND THE SIGNS.

SWELL BUILDING — surge stronger near the ground, visibility dropping in the shallows, the entry point looking different, white water where there was none.

CURRENT STRENGTHENING — having to fin to hold position, the float pulling, drifting further between dives than expected.

VISIBILITY FALLING — losing sight of the buddy or of the float line, the bottom disappearing.

WIND RISING — surface chop making the diver harder to see and the swim back harder.

AND THE DIVER'S OWN STATE TURNING — shivering, or shivering that has stopped; fumbling a buckle; shorter dives; being cold and no longer minding.

THE DECISION IS MADE ON LAND. Agreeing in advance what would end the session — with a buddy, before anybody has driven, paid or kitted up — moves the judgement to a moment when it can be made clearly. 'We get out if the swell reaches the second rock' survives a two-hour drive; a judgement made in the water while cold does not.

The exit is the thing to watch

Almost every condition that turns during a session matters chiefly because of what it does to the exit.

Swell that has built makes a rock exit dangerous. Current that has strengthened puts the exit upstream. Falling visibility means the exit cannot be seen. Wind and chop make the swim back longer and colder.

So the practical monitoring is simpler than watching four variables: look at the exit periodically, and ask whether you could make it now. That single check integrates all of them, and it is answerable from the water.

The corollary is that the exit is identified before entering, a second one is identified where possible, and the session ends while the answer is still comfortably yes — not at the point where it becomes no. A margin that has been consumed cannot be recovered by a diver who is by then cold and tired.

And the buddy has a role here that is easy to forget: they are better placed to notice that YOU have deteriorated than you are. An agreement that either person can end the session, without discussion or justification, removes the social pressure that keeps people in the water.

Local knowledge beats a forecast, and neither beats looking

A forecast describes a region and a diver is at a point. Headlands accelerate current, bays shelter, reefs refract swell, and a rock platform exposed to one swell direction can be calm in another with the same significant wave height.

That is why local knowledge is worth more than any general rule in this family, and why diving an unfamiliar coast with somebody who knows it is a genuine safety measure rather than a convenience.

It is also why forecasts should be read for the variables rather than for the verdict: swell height AND period AND direction, wind direction relative to the coast, state of tide, and how each is expected to change during the session. A long-period groundswell of the same height as a short wind swell behaves entirely differently at a rock entry.

And when the forecast and the water disagree, the water is right.
