How to identify arctic char

The characters that identify arctic char, ranked by how far each one can be trusted on its own.

Look at this first
Read the spots against the background, not the colour of the fish. Char carry PALE spots — cream, pink, occasionally red — scattered over a DARKER flank. Trout and salmon do the reverse: dark spots on a lighter ground. Then check the paired fins for a clean white leading edge.
Diagnostic — settles it on its own
Each of these settles the identification on its own. If one is clear, you have your answer.
Pale spots on a dark ground
The spotting is light on dark, which places the fish in Salvelinus and rules out Salmo and Oncorhynchus in one look. It holds whatever the fish's overall colour is doing, and it holds in a photograph, which most salmonid characters do not.
White leading edges on the paired and anal fins
The pelvic, pectoral and anal fins carry a sharp white front edge, usually with a dark line immediately behind it. This is the second Salvelinus character and it is present in fish of any condition, including spawning fish where everything else has gone red.
No vermiculation on the back or dorsal fin
Brook trout — the other char in this catalogue — carry pale worm-like mottling across the back and onto the dorsal fin. Arctic char do not. If the back carries wavy pale markings rather than round spots, it is a brook trout.
Supporting — use with other characters
Real characters that are not conclusive by themselves. Use two or three together.
Small scales and a slender wrist
Char scales are noticeably finer than a trout's of the same size, which gives the flank a smooth, almost scaleless look at arm's length. A supporting impression rather than a check.
Suggestive only — varies with condition
Hints only. These vary with condition, season, water and how long the fish has been out of it, and a fish that contradicts them is still the same species.
The orange or red belly
Spectacular and almost useless for identification. Belly colour is a condition character: brilliant in spawning fish, muted or absent in a silver sea-run or deep-lake fish, and variable between populations in the same country. Do not identify a char by how red it is.
What it gets confused with
- Brook trout, wherever both occur. Vermiculation on the back settles it: present means brook trout.
- Brown trout and sea trout in silver condition, separated by the light-on-dark spotting.
- Lake trout in North America, which is also a char and is separated by its deeply forked tail and pale grey ground.
- Other char species and forms in the northern part of the range, which this page cannot separate.

Where this stops working
This page identifies a fish as an Arctic char and stops there, and the stopping point matters. Salvelinus alpinus is a species complex whose taxonomy is genuinely unsettled, with distinct forms — differing in size, diet, depth and spawning time — coexisting in single lakes, and with relict populations isolated since the last glaciation that occur in one water and nowhere else. No field character available to an angler resolves those, and several are of high conservation concern. A char from a southern relict lake should be treated as belonging to a population that cannot be replaced, whatever the page above says about the species.
