How to identify yellowfin tuna

The characters that identify yellowfin tuna, ranked by how far each one can be trusted on its own.

Line under tensionCan cause serious injury or death

Big-game tackle carries very high drag loads, and a leader, knot or terminal component failing under that load returns hooks toward the boat at speed. A hand caught between line and rod, or in a running line, is seriously injured.

What reduces it: Keep hands clear of running line and of the leader while a fish is on. Nobody stands in line with a loaded rod or behind a leader being handled. Wear gloves for leader work and inspect connections regularly.

Offshore, hours from help, on a moving deck, with heavy tackle and a large fish. A person overboard or a serious injury here is a different event from the same thing inshore.

What reduces it: Wear a lifejacket. File a plan ashore. Carry the means to call for help. Keep the deck clear and agree procedure before a fish takes.

Look at this first

On a decent-sized fish the second dorsal and the anal fin are drawn out into long curved scythes that sweep back towards the tail. No other tuna in the same water does that, and it is the character the species is named for.

Diagnostic — settles it on its own

Each of these settles the identification on its own. If one is clear, you have your answer.

  • Elongated sickle-shaped second dorsal and anal fins

    Both fins extend well back in a smooth curve, sometimes reaching close to the tail on a big fish. Bigeye and bluefin keep both fins short. The character develops with size, which is the limitation that sets the whole shape of this page.

Supporting — use with other characters

Real characters that are not conclusive by themselves. Use two or three together.

  • Finlets edged in black

    The row of small fins between the second dorsal and the tail is bright with narrow dark margins. Distinctive and shared to some degree with bigeye, so it confirms rather than decides.

  • Eye size against head size

    The eye is proportionally small. A bigeye tuna's is conspicuously large, and on small fish where the fins have not yet extended this proportion is doing most of the work. It is a judgement rather than a measurement.

  • A deep mid-body on a keeled tail wrist

    The body is deepest around the middle rather than forward, and the tail wrist carries lateral keels with the fins folding into grooves. This places the fish among the true tunas and rules out the mackerels and bonitos.

Suggestive only — varies with condition

Hints only. These vary with condition, season, water and how long the fish has been out of it, and a fish that contradicts them is still the same species.

  • A stripe along the flank

    A broken pale or gold line is often visible along the side of a fresh fish. It fades fast, varies between individuals, and is present in other tunas. A hint at best.

What it gets confused with

  • Bigeye tuna, which is the serious confusion and is genuinely difficult below about twenty kilograms.
  • Blackfin and longtail tuna in their respective ranges, both smaller and shorter-finned.
  • Bluefin tuna, which is heavier through the shoulder with much shorter pectoral fins.

Where this stops working

Small yellowfin and small bigeye are close to inseparable in the field, and the character this page ranks first has not developed on either of them. Commercial and scientific identification of small fish uses liver morphology, which is not a field character by any definition. Where a fishery sets species-specific limits, an unresolvable small tuna is exactly the case those rules were written for and the cautious reading is the right one.
