How to identify thick-lipped grey mullet
Chelon labrosus · Mugilidae
The characters that identify thick-lipped grey mullet, ranked by how far each one can be trusted on its own.

How this was identified, and who took it
Identified by: Full lateral view over sand. Longitudinal stripes following the scale rows, two well-separated dorsal fins and the thick upper lip at the snout are all visible.Diego Delso — CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons — source, licenceLook at this first
The whole identification is in the upper lip. On this species it is deep and fleshy, thicker than the eye's diameter in a decent fish and often carrying small bumps along its lower edge. The thin-lipped mullet's upper lip is a narrow strip by comparison.
Diagnostic — settles it on its own
Each of these settles the identification on its own. If one is clear, you have your answer.
A deep fleshy upper lip
Noticeably thick, with a row of small papillae along its lower margin in most adults. It is the character that names the species and it is checked in one look at a fish in hand. Thin-lipped mullet has nothing resembling it.
Supporting — use with other characters
Real characters that are not conclusive by themselves. Use two or three together.
Two widely separated dorsal fins
The first dorsal carries four spines and sits well forward of the second, with a clear gap between. It places the fish among the mullets and, taken with the small mouth, rules out bass entirely.
A blunt head with a small toothless mouth
The head is rounded and the mouth small, set for grazing rather than seizing. Anybody who has confused a mullet with a bass from a distance resolves it the moment the head is visible.
Scales running forward onto the head
Large scales extending across the top of the head towards the snout, which is characteristic of the family. Useful for placing the fish and no use at all for separating the mullets from one another.
Suggestive only — varies with condition
Hints only. These vary with condition, season, water and how long the fish has been out of it, and a fish that contradicts them is still the same species.
Grey lines along the flank
Faint longitudinal stripes following the scale rows over silver. Present in several mullet species and variable within each, so it is scene-setting rather than evidence.
What it gets confused with
- Thin-lipped grey mullet, which is the whole reason this page exists. Look at the upper lip and nothing else.
- Golden grey mullet, which carries a distinct gold patch on the gill cover.
- European sea bass at a distance in a harbour, until either fish's mouth becomes visible.
Side by side: Thick-lipped grey mullet vs Flathead grey mullet.
Where this stops working
Lip thickness is a proportion rather than a measurement and it is less pronounced on small fish, so juveniles are considerably harder than adults. The grey mullets hybridise and mixed shoals of two or three species in the same estuary are normal. The species is assessed as Near Threatened globally and grows slowly, which is worth knowing before deciding whether to keep one.
The full record
This page covers identification only. The Thick-lipped grey mullet record covers behaviour, lifecycle, distribution, handling and the sources behind all of it.

How it is caught
- Float fishingFine tackle and small baits presented at a set depth in harbours and creeks, which is the classic approach to a fish that inspects everything.
- LedgeringA light leger in flowing harbour and estuary water, used where a float cannot be controlled or where fish are feeding on the bottom.
- Saltwater fly fishingAn established specialist approach, imitating the algae, maggots and small crustaceans mullet graze on rather than presenting a baitfish pattern.
Where it lives
Where you will find it
- AngleseyThe harbours, the strait and the sheltered creeks hold a mullet fishery among the better ones in Wales, and it is the fishery most visitors walk past.
- Connemara and Galway BayA genuine local speciality: mullet shoal around the piers, the working port and the promenade of this coast, and are taken on the float from May into early October.
- Cork Harbour and the east Cork coastShoal in the harbour through summer, associated with a working commercial fleet and the offal it produces, and taken on small float-fished fish strips with fish over three kilos recorded.
- CyprusThe harbour species that most rewards effort, and the one that makes the island's fine-tackle-and-groundbait approach make sense. Mullet in clear, tideless, heavily-watched harbour water are as technical a proposition as anything in European shore fishing.
- Dublin Bay and the Wicklow coastShoal in the tidal river through the city and around the working harbours, taken on float-fished bread and on offal from the commercial fleet — genuinely urban fishing rather than coast that happens to be near a city.
- Morecambe Bay and the north-west England coastIn the creeks and around the freshwater outfalls through the summer, in the numbers estuaries of this kind always hold and with the difficulty they always present.
- Pembrokeshire and the south-west Wales coastIn Milford Haven, the estuaries and the harbours through the warmer months, which is a quite different water from the exposed coast a few miles seaward.
- The Atlantic coast of IrelandAssociated with the sheltered bays, sea inlets, harbours and estuary mouths of this coast rather than with its exposed rock, and present through the warmer months.
