How to identify roach
Rutilus rutilus · Leuciscidae
The characters that identify roach, ranked by how far each one can be trusted on its own.

Look at this first
Find where the dorsal fin starts and compare it with the pelvic fins. On a roach the dorsal begins directly above the pelvic root; on a rudd it begins clearly behind. That is the check that separates the two commonest silver fish in European stillwaters, and colour will not do it.
Diagnostic — settles it on its own
Each of these settles the identification on its own. If one is clear, you have your answer.
The dorsal fin starts above the pelvic fin base
Lay a finger vertically from the front of the dorsal fin: on a roach it lands on the base of the pelvics. On a rudd it lands well in front of the dorsal, because the rudd's dorsal is set further back. The single most reliable separation, and it does not fade.
Supporting — use with other characters
Real characters that are not conclusive by themselves. Use two or three together.
A terminal or very slightly downturned mouth
The mouth points forward or a little down, matching a fish that feeds through the water column and on the bed. A rudd's is distinctly upturned for taking food off the surface. Best used together with the dorsal check.
Around 40 to 45 scales along the lateral line
Countable on a fish in the hand and useful against silver bream and small common bream, whose scales are smaller and more numerous. Tedious, and decisive when everything else is ambiguous.
Suggestive only — varies with condition
Hints only. These vary with condition, season, water and how long the fish has been out of it, and a fish that contradicts them is still the same species.
A red iris and reddish lower fins
The character everybody uses and the one that misleads most. Rudd have red fins too, often brighter, and both fade in poor condition or after time in a keepnet. Treat the colour as the thing that makes you check the dorsal.
What it gets confused with
- Rudd, constantly. Dorsal position first, mouth angle second.
- Silver bream, which is deeper-bodied with a longer anal fin and smaller scales.
- Roach × rudd and roach × bream hybrids, which are common and genuinely intermediate.

Where this stops working
Hybrids are the real difficulty and they are not rare: roach cross with rudd and with bream freely, and the resulting fish shows an intermediate dorsal position, an intermediate mouth angle or an anal fin longer than a roach's. A fish that half-fits two descriptions is more likely a hybrid than a badly-coloured example of either parent, and no visual character will settle it. Colour is unreliable throughout and particularly so in fish from coloured or acidic water.
