Who to ask before fishing anywhere in Florida

FishingHQ does not know the current access position here. Florida requires a saltwater fishing licence to fish from shore, a pier, a bridge or a jetty as well as from a boat, with exemptions that depend on age, residency and whether the trip is on a licensed charter. Several species are catch-and-release only, some carry separate permits or stamps, and fishing for sharks from shore requires its own permit and an educational course. Much of the Keys sits inside a National Marine Sanctuary whose zones restrict where and how fishing is permitted, on boundaries that are invisible from the water, and federal rules apply to some species beyond state waters. Measures change. Check the current position with the state wildlife authority and with the sanctuary before going.

    Charter departure port · Salt water

    A village strung along the Upper Keys with marinas on both the ocean and the bay side, and the departure point for the flats skiffs, backcountry boats and offshore charters that work the water around it.

    Particular to this water: A departure point, not a fishing mark. What the boats catch is recorded against the flats, the backcountry, the reef and the offshore ground. Fishing for sharks from shore in Florida requires a no-cost permit and completion of an educational course, renewed annually. It is not required when fishing from a vessel.
