How to identify bluefin trevally

Safety
Injury while handling fish — Can cause injury needing treatment
Sharp keeled scutes along the rear lateral line and a strong fish that thrashes when handled.
What reduces it: Handle in the water where possible, support the body horizontally, wear gloves, and keep hands clear of the rear flank where the scutes are.
Venomous and spined species — Can cause injury needing treatment
Ciguatera is a regional consideration for reef predators including this species in parts of the range.
What reduces it: Follow local health authority advice about which reef fish are safe to eat where you are. The risk varies regionally in ways no general rule captures.

Look at this first
Count spots rather than admiring fins. A bluefin trevally is peppered with small dark dots over the upper flank, increasing with age, and the trevallies it swims with are not. The electric fins that give it its name are the second thing to check, not the first.
No single character settles this one. Everything below is supporting or suggestive, and a confident identification needs several of them together — or, for the hardest cases, a count that cannot be made from a photograph.

Fine dark spotting on the flank
Small discrete dots scattered above the lateral line, sparse on young fish and dense on old ones. It is the most reliable visible separation from giant trevally, and unlike the fin colour it survives being photographed at depth.
A more sloping head than a giant trevally
The forehead rises at a gentler angle and the whole body is slimmer, so the fish reads as a longer, lighter animal. A comparative character, which means it needs the other species in mind to be useful.
Lateral scutes
The hard keeled scales along the rear lateral line that place the fish in the jacks. Establish this before applying anything else here, because it rules out a large number of reef fish in one movement.

Hints only. These vary with condition, season, water and how long the fish has been out of it, and a fish that contradicts them is still the same species.
Blue fins
In shallow water on a live adult the dorsal, anal and tail fins are a startling electric blue. Ranked here because water removes that wavelength with depth, and because a dead fish loses it within minutes. It is the best character on the boat and the worst one at fifteen metres.
What it gets confused with
- Giant trevally, the main confusion, settled by spotting and by the head profile.
- Bigeye trevally, which has a conspicuously larger eye and no spotting.
- Juvenile Caranx of several species, which lack the spots and the fin colour entirely and are close to inseparable in the field.

Where this stops working
This page has no diagnostic character and juveniles are the reason. A young bluefin trevally has neither the spots nor the blue fins and is separated from several congeners only on counts. Colour is unusable underwater beyond a few metres, and it is the character most non-specialists reach for first. Ciguatera is a regional consideration for reef predators of this kind, and it is a health question rather than an identification one.
