Bluefin trevally vs Giant trevally

How to tell them apart, and what follows from getting it right.

Why they get confused

Two large Caranx sharing reef, flat and surge-zone habitat across the whole Indo-Pacific, hitting the same lures in the same places and frequently in mixed groups. Adults are separable at a glance once you know what to look at; juveniles and sub-adults are not, because the character everyone relies on — the blue fins — is absent in young bluefin. Anglers also tend to judge by size, which fails whenever a young giant trevally and a mature bluefin are the same weight, which is often.

Why it matters

The practical consequence is handling and release. A giant trevally in the size classes commonly caught cannot be supported by one person or lifted by the jaw without injuring it, and the fishery for it is overwhelmingly catch-and-release; a bluefin trevally is a fish one person handles. Ciguatera risk also differs by species and by locality for large reef predators, and local advice on which fish are safe to eat is species-specific — so a misidentification is a food-safety error as well as an angling one. Retention rules, size limits and any aggregation protections are matters for the competent authority.
