Squid, cuttlefish and octopus — soft-bodied, fast-growing molluscs that are the main prey of a large share of the ocean's big predatory fish.

Cephalopoda covers squid, cuttlefish, octopus and nautilus. Squid in particular are abundant, grow extremely fast, live a year or two, and form dense shoals over the shelf and in open water, which makes them a food source that renews continually.
For open-ocean predators they are frequently the dominant item. Tuna, billfish, dolphinfish, amberjack, dentex and a long list of others take squid heavily, often at night and often at depth when the squid rise. Bottom-associated predators such as conger and grouper take octopus and cuttlefish instead.
The evidence is normally reported at this level, and often at a coarser one still, because cephalopod remains in a stomach are frequently reduced to beaks. Beaks can be identified to family and sometimes to species by a specialist, and diet studies vary enormously in how far they take that.
The scope is the class Cephalopoda. Where a source does identify a squid species and the catalogue holds a record for it, the edge should point there instead — this record is for the common case where it does not.
