Large triangular blade-like teeth on a fast, powerful fish that thrashes when landed. Deep clean lacerations are the characteristic injury and they occur readily.

What reduces it: Never put a hand near the mouth, including on a fish that appears spent. Control the fish before unhooking. Long pliers or a de-hooking tool, and gloves. A wire trace is required tackle rather than a refinement.

Venomous and spined speciesCan cause serious injury or death

Ciguatera poisoning from eating large individuals in parts of the range. The toxin is not destroyed by cooking or freezing and causes serious and sometimes prolonged illness.

What reduces it: Follow local health authority advice about which fish are safe to eat where you are. The risk varies regionally and with fish size in ways no general rule captures.

Look at this first

Two things and they are both obvious: narrow wavy bars crossing the flank in far greater number than any related mackerel, and a mouth full of large triangular blades. Between them the fish is named before it is aboard.

Diagnostic — settles it on its own

Each of these settles the identification on its own. If one is clear, you have your answer.

  • Numerous narrow wavy bars

    Fine vertical markings, often broken and irregular, crossing the flank in numbers well beyond what a king mackerel or a school mackerel carries. Bar count and bar width together, rather than either alone, do the separating.

  • Where the lateral line drops

    The lateral line falls away abruptly beneath the second dorsal rather than curving gently. It is the character used in keys for this genus and it is visible on a fish laid on a deck. Structural and unaffected by condition.

Supporting — use with other characters

Real characters that are not conclusive by themselves. Use two or three together.

  • Large triangular cutting teeth

    Flattened blade-shaped teeth in both jaws, entirely unlike the small conical teeth of a tuna. They place the fish among the Scomberomorus and they are the reason this species has a severe handling hazard attached to it.

  • A very elongate body on a narrow keeled wrist

    Long, compressed and tapering to a fine tail wrist with keels. The outline separates the Spanish mackerels from the tunas and bonitos even at distance in the water.

Suggestive only — varies with condition

Hints only. These vary with condition, season, water and how long the fish has been out of it, and a fish that contradicts them is still the same species.

  • A dark patch on the first dorsal

    Often present at the front of the first dorsal fin, and often not, and the fin is folded into its groove whenever the fish is moving. Worth a glance and no more.

What it gets confused with

  • King mackerel where ranges are confused, which has fewer and fainter markings as an adult.
  • Other Scomberomorus across the Indo-Pacific, particularly the school and spotted mackerels, separated on bar pattern.
  • Wahoo, which has similar bars but a much longer beak-like snout and a different tooth structure.

Where this stops working

Juvenile Scomberomorus of several species carry markings that converge, and bar counts overlap at the edges between the closest relatives. The species has entered the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal, so range is a less reliable guide than it used to be. Large individuals in parts of the range carry ciguatoxin, and that is a health matter governed by local advice rather than anything an identification page can settle.
