Why they get confused
Both are Salvelinus — chars rather than trouts — with pale spots on a dark ground and no black spotting, which is the character that separates them from every true trout and therefore the one people stop at.

Why it matters
A large lake trout may be decades old and is irreplaceable in a way a two-year-old brook trout is not, which changes what a considered release looks like. The two are also almost always managed separately.
