Bottom type, and what lives on it

Sand, rubble, reef, kelp, seagrass and wreck each hold a different fish community for structural reasons — which makes bottom type the most transferable habitat knowledge in the discipline.

What is on the bottom decides what lives there, and the reasoning transfers to any coast in the world even though the species do not.

SAND AND MUD hold ambush and burrowing fish — flatfish, rays, gurnards, lizardfish, flathead — and comparatively little else. Featureless sand is usually a place to cross rather than to hunt, and the exception is the EDGE where sand meets something else.

RUBBLE AND BROKEN GROUND holds far more than clean sand because it provides shelter at small scale. It is under-dived because it is unglamorous.

REEF AND ROCK is where structure, shelter and current interaction concentrate life. Fish position predictably: on the up-current edge, in the lee of outcrops, under ledges, in holes.

KELP is a three-dimensional forest with its own community and its own hazards. It reduces light, restricts movement, and is an entanglement environment. In cold temperate water it is the dominant habitat and a diver who cannot work kelp cannot fish much of the coast.

SEAGRASS is nursery habitat — juveniles, and the things that eat them — and is ecologically sensitive in a way that argues for care about where fins go.

WRECKS AND ARTIFICIAL STRUCTURE concentrate life for the same reasons reefs do, with added entanglement risk from remaining fishing gear.

AND THE MOST PRODUCTIVE GROUND IS ALMOST ALWAYS AN EDGE: sand against reef, kelp against open rock, the lip of a drop-off.

Why edges matter more than features

The transferable principle is that boundaries concentrate life.

An edge gives a fish two things at once: shelter on one side and feeding on the other, with a short move between them. It also concentrates prey, because small fish using the structure are exposed as they cross the open ground.

That is why a sand-reef interface out-fishes either the sand or the middle of the reef, why the outer edge of a kelp bed is more productive than its centre, and why a drop-off holds more than the flat ground above or below it.

It is also why searching structure systematically along its boundary is more productive than swimming across open ground — and it costs less oxygen, because the diver is not covering distance for nothing.

The same logic explains why current matters here: an edge in moving water is delivering food continuously, and a fish on the sheltered side of it is feeding without swimming.

Ground type and safety are the same subject

Bottom type decides the fishing and it also decides most of the hazards.

KELP is an entanglement environment, reduces light, and hides both the diver's own lines and the way out. Working it demands the entanglement discipline the safety family describes rather than merely patience.

ROCK AND REEF near the surface is where surge amplifies, and holes and ledges are where hole hunting's specific risks live — following a line into a space you cannot back out of.

WRECKS carry remaining fishing gear, monofilament and net, which is the entanglement hazard the diver did not bring with them and cannot see.

SAND is benign underwater and can be the most dangerous exit, because a surf beach exit in swell is its own problem.

The practical consequence is that ground type belongs in the pre-dive assessment alongside swell, current and visibility — it is not only a question about where the fish will be.
