Before you spearfish — this comes first

  • Get proper instruction before you spearfish. A recognised freediving or spearfishing course teaches the things that actually kill people in this sport, and reading about them is not the same as being taught them.
  • Dive with a buddy, and dive one up, one down — one diver in the water, one on the surface watching them, every dive. A breath-hold blackout is silent and gives no warning; a watching buddy is the difference between an incident and a fatality.
  • Stay inside your own training and experience. Depth and breath-hold times are personal, they change day to day, and nobody else's numbers apply to you.
  • Understand the conditions before you enter the water: visibility, current, swell, tide, boat traffic and your exit. Conditions decide whether a dive is reasonable far more often than skill does.
  • Use equipment you have been shown how to use, check it before every session, and be visible — a marked float and line are how boat traffic knows you are there.
  • Never extend a dive for a fish. No catch is worth pushing a breath-hold, and the urge to take one more second is exactly what a blackout feels like from the inside — which is to say, like nothing at all.

Reef and kelp diving compared

Two structurally complex environments that hold fish for the same reason and present opposite problems: reef is a maze you can see through, and kelp is a forest you cannot.

Safety

EntanglementCan cause serious injury or death

Kelp is structure that moves and closes. A route into a thick stand is not automatically a route out, because the stipes have shifted with the surge and the canopy has closed over — and every line a diver carries finds kelp instantly, particularly with a fish running into it.

What reduces it: Work the edges and gullies rather than the interior, keep the surface in sight, keep the rig short and tidy, and carry a cutting tool reachable with either hand without looking. Dive kelp with a buddy positioned to see you rather than somewhere else on the ground.

Worse when:

  • In swell, where surge moves the whole forest and the diver with it
  • After a shot, when a running fish is putting line into the stand
  • In poor light, when the canopy makes the surface hard to locate

Precautions that always apply here

  • Never spearfish or freedive alone.
  • Dive one up, one down: one diver down, one on the surface actively watching, every single dive.
  • Carry a charged phone in a waterproof case, or another means of calling for help.

BOTH HOLD FISH BECAUSE STRUCTURE HOLDS FISH — hard substrate supports attached life, attached life supports invertebrates, invertebrates support fish, and complexity provides refuge. Beyond that the two environments demand different things.

REEF. Hard structure — rock, coral, boulder, wreck — with gullies, overhangs, holes and edges. Visibility is usually better than in kelp, sometimes very much better, and the fish are frequently visible before they are approached.

WHAT IT DEMANDS: reading structure to predict where a species holds; the discipline not to enter overhangs, swim-throughs or holes, which is where divers become trapped; and awareness that a fish shot into structure will attempt to reach it, which is why holding and controlling a fish immediately after the shot matters more here than anywhere.

ITS HAZARDS: entanglement of line in structure; entrapment where a diver enters an enclosed space; abrasion and cuts from rock, coral and barnacle; and surge, which around structure becomes unpredictable and can push a diver into it hard.

KELP. A three-dimensional forest of large algae growing from the bottom to the surface, dense enough to obscure everything.

WHAT IT DEMANDS: moving through rather than over, which is slow and consumes air budget on the descent; hunting by short-range encounter rather than by spotting at distance; and a shot discipline that accounts for the fact that a fish is frequently visible only briefly and only partly, which is the situation in which uncertainty about identification is highest.

ITS HAZARDS ARE DOMINATED BY ENTANGLEMENT. Kelp catches line, floats, guns and divers, and a breath-hold diver tangled on the ascent is in immediate danger. That is why line management is stricter here, why a cutting tool that can be reached with either hand is not optional, and why diving kelp alone is refused by every organisation that publishes guidance.

KELP ALSO CHANGES THE LIGHT dramatically — dim, green and directional — which affects both identification and the diver's own orientation, and it moves with swell in a way that makes a fixed reference hard to keep.

WHAT TRANSFERS BETWEEN THEM. Reading where structure produces cover and current, keeping the buddy in a position to help, and the standing rules: one up and one down, a conservative approach to any enclosed space, and the acceptance that aborting the dive is a legitimate and frequently correct answer.

Kelp is structure that moves, closes and holds line

Reef and kelp are usually treated as warm-water and cold-water versions of the same dive. They are not, and the difference is not temperature. It is that one of them is a rigid structure and the other is a moving one.

VISIBILITY BEHAVES DIFFERENTLY. On reef, visibility is a distance. In kelp it is a direction: a diver can see ten metres along a gully and half a metre through the canopy, and the fish know it. That changes shot ranges, it changes how much warning a diver has, and it makes `aspetto`-style waiting inside a kelp gully far more productive than swimming over the top of it.

KELP CLOSES BEHIND YOU, and this is the property that matters for safety. A route in is not automatically a route out, because the stipes have moved with the surge and the canopy has closed over. A diver who has swum into a thick stand at depth and turned round to find no obvious exit is in the situation the technique's whole discipline exists to prevent — which is why the rule is to work the EDGES and the gullies rather than the interior, and to keep the surface in sight.

AND IT HOLDS EVERY LINE IN THE WATER. Shooting line, float line and reel line all find kelp instantly, and a fish that runs into a stand wraps. This is where a short, tidy rig earns its keep and where a knife stops being a tool and becomes part of the safety system.

SURGE IS THE THIRD DIFFERENCE. Kelp grows where water moves, and near the surface in swell a diver is moved along with the whole forest. That is exhausting, it is disorienting, and it puts a diver into rock repeatedly.

WHAT KELP GIVES BACK is fish. It is among the most productive temperate ground there is, it holds species that live nowhere else on the coast, and it is dived far less than the open reef beside it because it is harder work.

THE REEF'S ADVANTAGE, STATED FAIRLY: it is legible. A diver can see the shape of the ground, plan a dive onto a specific feature, and see their exit the whole time. That legibility is why reef is where a diver should learn and kelp is where they should go afterwards.
