Rod length and casting distance

A longer rod increases the arc the lead is accelerated through, which is why beach rods are long — but length costs control, accuracy and comfort, and past a point it costs distance too.
A cast is an acceleration problem. The lead leaves the rod tip at whatever speed the rod has managed to give it, and everything about rod length follows from how length affects that acceleration.
A longer rod sweeps the tip through a longer arc for the same rotation at the hands. More arc means more time under acceleration, and more time means a higher tip speed at release, all else equal. That is the mechanical reason surf and beach rods are long, and the reason a match angler reaching a far bank uses a longer rod than one fishing at their feet.
All else is not equal, though, and three things push back.
A longer blank is heavier and has more of its mass further from the hands, so it is harder to accelerate. Past a length that depends on the blank's material and the angler's strength, the extra arc is bought with a rotation the angler cannot deliver, and distance falls rather than rises.
A longer rod is less accurate, because a small angular error at the hands becomes a larger positional error at the far end.
And a longer rod is harder to use in confined space: under trees, on a crowded pier, from a small boat, or anywhere the backcast has somewhere to go wrong.
So length is a trade between reach and control, and the right answer is set by the environment more than by the desire to cast far.
What else decides distance, which is most of it
Length is one variable among several and rarely the dominant one.
Load matters more. A blank cast with a weight in the middle of its designed range compresses and recovers efficiently; the same blank under-loaded barely bends and throws poorly however long it is.
Line diameter matters more still at range, because the line's own drag through the air and through the rod rings grows with the length of line in flight. This is the mechanism behind braid's distance advantage: it is not that braid is stronger but that it is thinner for the same strength.
Technique dominates everything. The difference between an efficient casting stroke and an inefficient one on the same tackle is larger than the difference between two rod lengths, which is why distance casting is a discipline with its own instruction and why buying length is the least reliable route to reach.
And wind decides the outcome on many days regardless. Casting into wind rewards a heavier, more compact terminal arrangement and a lower trajectory, and no amount of rod length substitutes for that adjustment.
Regional conventions, and what they are responding to
Beach rods in Europe are commonly around four metres and are used with a long, powerful stroke; the length is a response to surf, distance and the need to hold line above breaking waves.
Australian and South African beach rods run longer still in some traditions, and the reasoning is the same one taken further: big surf, steep beaches and heavy leads.
North American surf rods sit across a wide range, and shorter rods are common where the fishing is done with lures rather than with bait and leads, because accuracy and repeated casting matter more than maximum reach.
Asian and Mediterranean shore fishing includes very long rods used with fine tackle for a different reason again — reach over shallow, clear water rather than power against surf.
The pattern across all of them is that length answers a local combination of surf, water depth and method, and no single convention is the general case.
