Overhead power lines — Can cause serious injury or death
Carbon fibre rods conduct electricity. Contact with — or close approach to — an overhead power line while casting or carrying a rod upright is regularly fatal, and electricity can arc across a gap without any physical contact at all.
What reduces it: Look up before setting up. Do not fish anywhere near overhead lines, and treat the safe distance as considerably greater than the length of the rod. Carry rods horizontally, particularly when moving between swims.

A fishing rod does three jobs: it loads and releases energy to cast, it absorbs the shock of a fighting fish so the line does not, and it transmits information back to the hand. Everything about rod design is a compromise between those three.
The critical specification is not length. It is the weight range the rod is designed to work with, expressed as a casting weight in grams or ounces for lure and beach rods, as a test curve in pounds for carp and specimen rods, or as a line weight number for fly rods. A rod loaded outside its range does not simply cast less well — it casts badly and it can break, because a blank flexing beyond its design curve fails at the point of maximum stress.
The second specification is action: where along the blank the rod bends. A fast action bends mainly at the tip and gives a crisp, direct feel; a through action bends along most of its length and gives a softer, more forgiving fight. Neither is better, and the choice follows from what the rod is for.

What it does
Stores energy during the casting stroke and releases it to accelerate the terminal tackle; absorbs the shock of a running or lunging fish so that peak loads never reach the line; keeps line clear of the water; and transmits vibration from the terminal tackle back to the angler's hand. A rod is a spring, a shock absorber and a sensor at the same time, and the three requirements pull in different directions — which is why there is no universal rod.
How to choose one
- Choose by the weight it must cast, not by length — casting weight or test curve is the specification that decides whether a rod works for a job.
- Match the action to the fight: fast for direct contact and positive hooking, through for cushioning light lines and soft-mouthed fish.
- Length buys casting distance and line control at the cost of accuracy and handling in confined space.
- A rod that comfortably handles the fish is more useful than one that just about survives it — an over-stressed rod is how a fight becomes a rebuild.
- For a first rod, pick the middle of the range you expect to fish rather than either end.
What the numbers mean
CASTING WEIGHT, printed as a range such as 10–30 g, is the weight of terminal tackle the rod is designed to load against. Below the range the rod does not flex enough to cast well; above it, the blank is stressed beyond its design. TEST CURVE, printed in pounds and used mainly for carp and specimen rods, is the weight required to pull the tip through ninety degrees — a rough proxy for power, where a 2.75 lb test curve rod is a general carp rod and a 3.5 lb one is for long range or heavy ground. FLY LINE WEIGHT, a number from about 1 to 12, describes the mass of the first few metres of line the rod is designed to cast, and rod and line must match. LENGTH affects casting distance, line control and how manageable the rod is in a confined swim.
Care, and how it fails
Rods break at stress concentrations rather than at random. The commonest causes are: a nick or crack in the blank from a knock, which fails later under load; over-tightened or ill-fitting joints, which crack the female section; lifting a snagged lead by pulling with the rod, which loads the tip far beyond its design; and lifting a heavy fish vertically with the rod rather than using a net. Rinse salt off after sea use, check the blank for damage after any impact, and never pull for a break with the rod — point the rod straight at the snag and pull from the reel.
