Injury while handling fishCan cause serious injury or death

A long, hard bill on a powerful fish thrashing beside a boat. Billfish have injured and occasionally killed people, and the danger is greatest when a green fish is brought to the boat too early.

What reduces it: Do not bring a green fish to the boat. Control the bill with a gloved hand from behind, never in front. Nobody in the water with a billfish alongside. Agree roles before the fish arrives and clear the deck.

What reduces it: Nobody stands in the line's path or behind a leader being handled. Gloves, and a wireman prepared to let go. Inspect connections regularly.

Look at this first

The dorsal fin ends the question. It stands taller than the fish is deep and runs most of the length of the back, folding away into a groove when the fish swims fast. Nothing else with a bill has one.

Diagnostic — settles it on its own

Each of these settles the identification on its own. If one is clear, you have your answer.

  • A dorsal fin taller than the body is deep

    An enormous sail of a first dorsal, far exceeding body depth and extending along most of the back. Every marlin has a first dorsal that is comparatively low and short. This is as close to unambiguous as billfish identification gets.

Supporting — use with other characters

Real characters that are not conclusive by themselves. Use two or three together.

  • Long pelvic fins that fold into grooves

    Slender pelvics that tuck away beneath the body, unusually long for their width. Together with the dorsal groove they show a fish built to reduce drag at speed, and they are visible in almost any photograph of a raised fish.

  • A slender compressed body

    Light for its length and flattened side to side, where a marlin of similar length is round and heavy. Proportion separates small marlin from large sailfish better than weight does, because the two overlap.

  • The bill's proportion

    Long and rounded in section, but shorter relative to the body than a marlin's. A comparative character that wants both fish in mind, which is why it sits below the sail.

Suggestive only — varies with condition

Hints only. These vary with condition, season, water and how long the fish has been out of it, and a fish that contradicts them is still the same species.

  • Rows of pale spots lighting up on the flank

    An excited sailfish flushes with vertical bars of pale blue dots that intensify and fade within seconds. Spectacular, and a description of the fish's state rather than of its species.

What it gets confused with

  • White marlin, which shares the size range and has a rounded first dorsal lobe rather than a sail.
  • Striped marlin in the Pacific, which is the closest thing to a sailfish in dorsal height and still falls well short.
  • Small blue marlin, separated by body section and by dorsal height rather than by weight.

Where this stops working

Whether Atlantic and Indo-Pacific sailfish are one species or two has been treated both ways and the catalogue follows the single-species treatment; a fish identified confidently in the field may still sit inside an unsettled taxonomy. Damaged or folded dorsal fins on a landed fish remove the character this page depends on entirely, and a photograph taken with the sail down is much harder to read than one taken with it raised.
