Species that bite — Can cause serious injury or death
A hooked marlin brought alongside is enormously powerful and the bill can cause fatal injuries; crew have been struck by leaping fish.
What reduces it: Never attempt to boat a green fish, keep all hands clear of the bill, wear gloves on the leader and be prepared to cut it, and brief crew before fishing.
Atlantic blue marlin is the archetypal big-game fish: a huge, cobalt-backed, spear-billed predator of warm open ocean, capable of extraordinary speed and of the leaping runs that made billfishing what it is.
Females grow far larger than males — a marlin over about 130 kilograms is almost certainly female — and it is the large females that matter most reproductively. That fact, combined with real concern over Atlantic stock status, is why recreational blue marlin fishing has shifted decisively toward release, with tag-and-release and circle hooks now standard practice in most fisheries.
It is separated from white marlin and sailfish by the pointed tips of its dorsal and pectoral fins and by a lateral line pattern that forms a chain-like reticulated network.

Lifecycle and reproduction
Fast-growing and long-lived, with a pronounced size difference between the sexes: females reach several times the maximum weight of males. Highly migratory across the whole Atlantic basin.
Spawns in warm oceanic waters, with females producing enormous numbers of eggs in multiple batches through the season. Spawning areas are broad oceanic regions rather than defined sites.
Feeding and senses
Takes tuna, dolphinfish, squid and other pelagic prey, using the bill to stun prey in a fast slashing pass before returning to feed.
A high-speed daylight visual predator of the upper ocean, hunting in clear blue water and often associating with temperature breaks and current edges where prey concentrates.
Through the year
Follows warm water and prey across ocean basins, producing seasonal concentrations at well-known offshore grounds — the basis of the tournament calendar rather than of the fish's own schedule.
Distribution
Atlantic Ocean: in tropical and temperate waters. We follow Nakamura 1985 in recognizing Makaira mazara and Makaira nigricans as two distinct species chiefly because of differences in the pattern of the lateral line system. Many scientists, however, do not recognise this character as specifically diagnostic and consider the latter species as a single pantropical species occurring in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. Why anglers care
One of the premier big-game targets in the world, fished by trolling lures and rigged baits offshore. Its significance to the sport is foundational, and the culture around it has changed substantially: release is now standard, circle hooks are widely required or recommended, and tagging programmes contribute genuine data. FishingHQ does not state what any rule is; billfish regulation is international and changes.
Handling and returning
Release practice matters more here than almost anywhere else. Keep the fish in the water, use circle hooks to reduce deep hooking, cut the leader close rather than attempting to remove a deep hook, and revive the fish alongside the boat under way. Never bring a green marlin aboard — the bill and the fish's power are both extremely dangerous.
The most dangerous fish anybody deliberately brings alongside
Everything in the sailfish account applies with the margins removed. A blue marlin is an order of magnitude heavier, the bill is a substantial weapon, and the fish is brought within arm's reach of people on purpose.
THE INJURIES IN THIS FISHERY ARE SERIOUS. Billfish have penetrated hulls and have killed people. The mechanism is a green fish beside a boat making a sudden movement while somebody is holding the leader or reaching for the bill. The person on the wire is doing the most dangerous job on the boat and should be the only one in that space, wearing gloves, with a clear route backwards and no wraps of leader that cannot be dropped instantly.
NEVER BRING A LIVE MARLIN ABOARD. There is no version of this that is safe or necessary.
THE FISH'S SIDE IS EQUALLY DEMANDING. Blue marlin fight to extreme exhaustion, and post-release survival depends heavily on fight duration, hook placement and revival. Circle hooks, heavy enough tackle to shorten the fight rather than prolong it, and an active revival alongside the boat with water moving over the gills are the practices that make release meaningful. A fish fought for hours on inadequate tackle is unlikely to survive whatever is done afterwards.
AND THE MEASUREMENT QUESTION. Length and girth taken alongside, with the fish in the water, is the accepted way to record a fish that is being released. Weighing requires killing it, and the fishery has largely moved away from that for good reason.

Warm blue water with a boundary in it, and why the temperature break is the mark
Blue marlin occupy open tropical and subtropical ocean, and the useful part of their habitat description is not where they are but what they are looking for within it.
THE BROAD REQUIREMENT IS WARM, CLEAR, DEEP BLUE WATER. Blue marlin are epipelagic and oceanic, spending most of their time in the mixed layer above the thermocline in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic, and they are strongly associated with high water temperatures — considerably warmer than swordfish tolerate. Their distribution shifts seasonally with the isotherms, expanding poleward in summer.
BUT WARM BLUE WATER IS ENORMOUS AND MOSTLY EMPTY, so the fish is not distributed evenly through it. What concentrates blue marlin is the same thing that concentrates every open-ocean predator: DISCONTINUITY. Temperature breaks, colour changes, current edges, upwellings, eddies, and the physical structures where water masses meet. Those fronts concentrate plankton, which concentrates baitfish, which concentrates the tuna and other prey blue marlin eat. A front is habitat in exactly the sense a reef is — a persistent physical feature that assembles a food chain — and it is why offshore fishing is conducted by reading sea-surface temperature and colour rather than by returning to fixed positions.
SEAMOUNTS, SHELF EDGES AND DROP-OFFS DO THE SAME JOB with bathymetry instead of hydrography. Water forced up over a seamount brings nutrients into the light, productivity follows, and a predictable concentration of life forms above a feature that never moves. Those are the closest thing the open ocean has to permanent marks and they are why particular banks and edges have reputations.
THE VERTICAL DIMENSION IS CONSTRAINED BY OXYGEN AS WELL AS TEMPERATURE. Blue marlin are largely restricted to the well-oxygenated water above the thermocline, and where an oxygen minimum zone sits shallow — as it does in parts of the tropical Atlantic — the habitat is compressed into a thinner surface layer. That compression concentrates the fish and is one reason certain regions fish as they do.
AND THE SPECIES IS HIGHLY MIGRATORY ACROSS THE WHOLE BASIN, with individuals crossing the Atlantic, which means a local fishery is sampling an ocean-wide population rather than a resident one.
