Coastal lagoons

Shallow water held behind a barrier of sand or reef, connected to the sea through a narrow mouth — warm, productive, biologically unlike the sea outside, and very frequently protected.
A coastal lagoon is a body of shallow water separated from the sea by a barrier — a sand spit, a shingle bank, a reef — and connected to it through one or more restricted openings. That single piece of geometry produces everything else about them.
RESTRICTED EXCHANGE IS THE DEFINING FACT. Because water moves in and out through a narrow mouth, a lagoon does not behave like the sea beside it. It warms further in summer and cools further in winter, its salinity can be lower than the sea after rain or HIGHER after evaporation in an arid climate, and its water can sit for a long time before it is replaced.
THE MOUTH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF WATER IN THE SYSTEM. Everything entering or leaving passes through it, current there is far stronger than anywhere else in the lagoon, and it concentrates both prey and predators. It is also where the system is most dynamic — mouths shoal, migrate along the coast, close entirely in some seasons and are opened by storms.
THEY ARE NURSERY GROUND, WHICH IS WHY THEY MATTER OUT OF PROPORTION TO THEIR SIZE. Shallow, warm, turbid, food-rich water with limited access for large predators is close to ideal for juvenile fish, and many species that are caught offshore as adults spent their first year in a lagoon. Sea bass, gilthead bream, mullet, flounder and many tropical species all use them this way.
THE ANGLING IS SIGHT-ORIENTED AND STEALTH-DEPENDENT. Shallow clear water, hard bottom in places, fish that can see out, and often no significant tide to disguise an approach. Long casts, light presentation and keeping off the skyline matter more here than in almost any sea fishing.
AND THEY ARE PROTECTED MORE OFTEN THAN ANY OTHER COASTAL ENVIRONMENT. Lagoons support birds in internationally significant numbers, which is why so many carry wetland designations, reserve status or seasonal restrictions. The overlap is not a coincidence and it is a practical fact: the more interesting the lagoon, the more likely it carries rules that a general coastal framework does not describe. Which body manages it, and what those rules currently are, must be checked locally before fishing — designations, access, seasons and permitted methods all vary and all change.

What characterises it
Shallow water bodies separated from the open sea by a depositional or reef barrier and exchanging through restricted openings. Typically a few metres deep at most, with soft bottom, seagrass or algal beds, and a channel system focused on the mouth. Temperature and salinity range much more widely than the adjacent sea, and in arid climates evaporation can make a lagoon saltier than the ocean.
What lives there
Extremely productive per unit area, dominated by species tolerant of variable salinity and temperature. Function as nursery habitat for many species taken offshore as adults, and support very large invertebrate and bird populations, which is why they are so frequently designated. Seagrass and algal beds provide the structure that would elsewhere be provided by reef or rock.
Through the year
Water temperature and salinity swing much further through the year than in the open sea, and species composition follows: marine species enter through the mouth in warmer months and leave or die back in cold. The mouth itself changes through the year in many systems, shoaling or closing in calm seasons and reopening in storms, which can isolate the lagoon biologically for months at a time.
