Warm-water fishing, and the oxygen problem

Warm water holds less oxygen while the fish needs more of it, and that squeeze explains where fish go in a heatwave, why they stop feeding, and why released fish die.
Hot weather is the condition under which fishing does most harm and produces least reward, and one mechanism accounts for both.
THE SOLUBILITY OF OXYGEN FALLS AS WATER WARMS. This is straightforward physics: warm water simply holds less dissolved oxygen than cold water can. At the same time, a fish's metabolic demand for oxygen is rising with the temperature. Supply down, demand up.
SO FISH GO WHERE THE OXYGEN IS. In a heatwave they concentrate at inflows, springs, weir pools, wind-blown shores where the surface is being churned, deeper cooler layers below the thermocline in lakes, and anywhere flowing or aerated. Knowing that turns a difficult day into a searchable one.
BUT THE DEEP LAYER MAY BE A TRAP. In a stratified productive lake, the deep water is cool and also deoxygenated, because decomposition consumes oxygen and stratification prevents it being replaced. Fish are then squeezed into a narrow band between water that is too warm above and water with no oxygen below. Finding that band is the whole summer problem in such waters.
FEEDING STOPS BEFORE THE FISH DIES. A stressed fish reduces or ceases feeding well before oxygen reaches lethal levels, which is why hot weather produces poor fishing rather than merely difficult fishing.
FISH KILLS FOLLOW A PREDICTABLE PATTERN. Hot still weather, a productive water, an algal bloom that dies and decomposes overnight, and dawn oxygen levels collapse. Most kills happen at first light for that reason, and the largest fish die first because they need the most oxygen.
AND RELEASE MORTALITY RISES SHARPLY. A fish fought hard in warm water accumulates an oxygen debt it cannot repay, and the evidence that post-release survival falls with rising temperature is among the better established findings in the catch-and-release literature. Shortening fights, minimising air exposure and reviving properly matter far more in warm water than in cold, and the most responsible option in extreme heat is frequently not to fish at all.
A warm sea that is hungry rather than suffocating
This record is about warm water holding less oxygen and what that does to a fish under stress. There is a second, quite different warm-water problem that a northern European angler meets on their first Mediterranean trip and almost always misreads.
THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN IS AMONG THE MOST NUTRIENT-POOR SEA WATER ON EARTH. Very little river input, limited upwelling, and a circulation that keeps nutrients out of the sunlit layer. Primary production is low, so the whole food web it supports is small.
CLARITY IS THAT SHORTAGE MADE VISIBLE. Water looks green and turbid where there is a great deal of phytoplankton in it, and phytoplankton is the base of everything above it. The transparency that makes a Greek bay beautiful is the same fact as the small fish in it. A clear blue sea is a hungry sea.
WHICH CHANGES WHAT A GOOD SESSION LOOKS LIKE. A shore session producing a handful of small seabream, a wrasse and a garfish is a normal Mediterranean session rather than a poor one. Anglers who arrive with Atlantic expectations and scale their tackle DOWN rather than their expectations tend to enjoy it considerably more, because the fishery rewards finesse and refuses weight.
THIS IS NOT THE OXYGEN PROBLEM AND SHOULD NOT BE CONFUSED WITH IT. A warm shallow lake in a heatwave is oxygen-limited and a fish in it is in physiological trouble. A warm oligotrophic sea is food-limited and its fish are perfectly comfortable — there are simply fewer of them and they grow more slowly.
WHERE THE TWO MEET is in enclosed and semi-enclosed water: a coastal lagoon in a Mediterranean summer can be warm, shallow, poorly exchanged and genuinely oxygen-stressed, particularly at night when the plants that produced oxygen all day consume it. Those are the waters where everything in this record applies at full force, and they are frequently the most attractive-looking water on the coast.
