A fast, powerful, algae-eating flats fish with a tiny toothless mouth — one of the hardest fish in the world to hook on a fly, and one of the most important farmed food fish in Asia.

This is bright-flat fishing in the tropics, standing in shallow water in full sun for hours with reflected glare from the surface and the bottom, and heat exhaustion degrades judgement and coordination before producing any obvious collapse.

What reduces it: Cover skin rather than relying on sunscreen alone, wear polarised eyewear both to see fish and to protect the eyes from reflected glare, carry substantially more water than the session looks like it needs, and treat the middle of the day as the part to sit out.

Milkfish run very long and fight hard, and a fish played to exhaustion in warm shallow water has an oxygen debt to repay in water that holds little spare oxygen. The scales are also easily lost, and a descaled patch is an infection route.

What reduces it: Fish tippet heavy enough to shorten the fight rather than prolong it, unhook in the water, avoid any contact with sand or dry surfaces, and hold the fish upright facing into flow until it swims off under its own power.

Milkfish is the only living species in its family, a silver, deeply forked-tailed fish of warm Indo-Pacific coasts that grows to well over a metre and runs like a fish twice its weight.

What makes it remarkable to an angler is what it eats. Milkfish are herbivores and detritivores: they graze algae, cyanobacterial mats and organic particles, filtering them with fine gill rakers through a small, toothless mouth. Almost every technique in saltwater fly fishing assumes a predator chasing something alive — and none of that applies here. A milkfish on a flat is grazing a drifting mat of algae, and the fly that catches it is an imitation of vegetation.

The result is one of the most frustrating and sought-after targets in the sport. The fish are visible, numerous, large and strong; the mouth is small and hard; hook-up rates are famously poor; and a hooked milkfish runs a very long way very fast.

Away from the flats it is something else entirely. Milkfish is one of the most important farmed food fishes in Asia — the national fish of the Philippines, farmed at scale in Indonesia and Taiwan — reared in brackish ponds from wild or hatchery fry. For most people who encounter the species, it is dinner rather than sport.

  • A single dorsal fin and a very large, deeply forked tail, giving a fast, streamlined silhouette often mistaken for a large mullet or a bonefish at distance.
  • Small, toothless, terminal mouth with no visible jaw armament at all — the feature that separates it from every predator it shares a flat with.

Lifecycle and reproduction

Spawns at sea, with larvae recruiting into shallow coastal, estuarine and brackish habitats — including mangrove and lagoon systems — before moving back offshore as they mature. That inshore fry phase is the basis of the aquaculture industry, which historically depended entirely on collecting wild fry and now uses hatchery production alongside it.

Broadcast spawner in warm offshore waters, releasing very large numbers of small pelagic eggs, with no parental care. Spawning is associated with warm-season conditions and, in several regions, with lunar periodicity.

Feeding and senses

Herbivorous and detritivorous. Grazes filamentous algae, cyanobacterial mats, diatoms and organic detritus, filtering fine particles with closely spaced gill rakers. It does not hunt, does not chase, and does not take prey — which is why the entire predator-imitation logic of saltwater fly fishing fails against it and why the successful flies imitate drifting algae rather than an animal.

Feeds visually on floating and suspended material in bright shallow water, and is markedly wary — a grazing shoal is easily put down by line shadow, a heavy cast or a wading angler, because the fish are feeding at or near the surface with nothing between them and the sky.

Through the year

Present year-round through the tropical range, with the flats fishery concentrated where algal mats form and drift. Fish gather where wind and current pile that material into lines and slicks, which is what an angler is actually looking for rather than the fish themselves.

Distribution

Widespread in the tropical and subtropical Indian and Pacific Oceans, from the east coast of Africa and the Red Sea through South and South-East Asia to the western Pacific islands and the eastern Pacific coast of the Americas. Occurs on coasts, in lagoons, over flats and well into brackish estuarine water.

Why anglers care

A specialist fly-fishing target of the Indo-Pacific flats — Seychelles and the wider western Indian Ocean, Christmas Island, and parts of South-East Asia and the Pacific — and one of the few genuinely famous saltwater quarry whose challenge is hooking rather than finding. The fish are large, visible and abundant where they occur; the small hard mouth and the algae diet make conversion rates poor, and a hooked fish runs hard and long enough to test tackle and backing properly. Elsewhere it is overwhelmingly a farmed food fish rather than a sport fish, and the two worlds barely overlap.

Handling and returning

Large scales are shed readily and the fish is powerful and awkward at the boat after a long fight. Support the body horizontally with wet hands, avoid dragging it across sand or a gunwale, and keep it in the water while unhooking. A long fight in warm shallow water is the main risk to the fish, so heavier tippet that shortens the fight is a welfare decision rather than a sporting compromise.
