Brackish water

Water between fresh and salt, where the species list is decided by salinity tolerance rather than by whether the water is called a sea or a river — and where pike and cod can share a coast.
Brackish water is anything saltier than fresh and fresher than the sea, and it is a far larger category than the estuaries most anglers associate it with.
SALINITY IS A CONTINUUM, NOT A LABEL. Open ocean sits around 35 parts per thousand. Fresh water is near zero. Everything between is brackish, and enormous fisheries sit in that band: the Baltic, which grades from nearly marine in its south-west to almost fresh in the far north; coastal lagoons; the upper reaches of every estuary; mangrove systems; and the brackish inland seas.
THE BIOLOGY IS GOVERNED BY OSMOREGULATION. A fish must keep the salt concentration in its body different from the water around it, and doing so costs energy. Most species are adapted to one end of the range and can tolerate a limited excursion from it. So salinity acts as a filter: as water freshens along a gradient, marine species drop out one by one and freshwater species appear.
THE RESULT IS THE THING NOTHING ELSE PRODUCES. In the Baltic, pike, perch and zander are caught in the SEA, spawning in shallow brackish bays, while cod and flounder occupy the saltier basins to the south. A model that binds species to 'freshwater' or 'saltwater' as though those were properties of the fish gets this exactly wrong. The right question is always what salinity a species tolerates.
BRACKISH SYSTEMS ARE OFTEN SPECIES-POOR AND INDIVIDUAL-RICH. Relatively few species tolerate the middle of the range, but those that do face little competition and can be extremely abundant. That is why a brackish fishery can feel simultaneously limited and extraordinary.
THEY ARE ALSO UNSTABLE, AND THE INSTABILITY IS THE FISHING. Rainfall, river flow, wind and — where there is one — tide all move the salinity boundary. Fish move with it. In a stratified system, salt water can sit as a wedge beneath fresher water, so the salinity a fish experiences depends on its depth as well as its position, and a lure fished a metre deeper can be in a different world.
AND LOW-SALINITY WATER STRESSES FISH DIFFERENTLY. Brackish systems are frequently shallow, warm easily, and can suffer oxygen problems that the open sea does not. Where a fish is already spending energy on osmoregulation, careful handling and quick release matter more rather than less.

What characterises it
Water of intermediate salinity, from a fraction of a part per thousand up to near-marine. Includes permanently brackish seas and lagoons as well as the mixing zones of estuaries. Frequently shallow, often stratified with saltier water beneath fresher, and physically variable on timescales from hours to seasons depending on whether the system is tidal, wind-driven or river-driven.
What lives there
Species composition is set by salinity tolerance rather than by habitat type, producing assemblages that exist nowhere else — freshwater predators alongside marine flatfish in the same body of water. Diversity is typically low because few species tolerate intermediate salinity, while abundance of the species that do can be very high. Many marine species use brackish shallows as nursery ground, and every diadromous species passes through a brackish transition twice in its life.
Through the year
The salinity boundary moves with river flow and rainfall, seaward in spate and landward in drought, and fish distribution follows it. Shallow brackish systems warm and cool faster than the open sea, so seasonal species turnover is sharper. In systems that freeze, ice cover changes oxygen and light for months. Where the system is tidal, the fortnightly spring-neap cycle moves the boundary as much as the season does.
