A sand smelt is the shoal of small translucent fish visible under almost any harbour wall in southern Europe, and it is one of the fish a light-tackle angler catches deliberately and everybody else uses.
It is slim, semi-transparent, and marked with a bright silver stripe running the length of the flank — the character that gives the silversides their name. The eye is large: FishBase records the eye diameter as wider than the snout length, which is the quickest way to be sure of the family. FishBase gives a maximum of 20 cm and an age of four years.
It is remarkably tolerant of what it lives in. Marine, brackish and fresh water, amphidromous, from Portugal and Spain down to Mauritania and out to Madeira, throughout the Mediterranean and Black Sea, with isolated populations on the coasts of England and the Netherlands and formerly-recognised subspecies in the Black and Caspian Seas. A fish that can live in a lagoon, a harbour and a river mouth is a fish that turns up in a great many places.
Catching it requires the smallest terminal tackle in the light-rock-fishing box: hooks of size 12 to 16, a fragment of bait or a one-inch soft plastic, and a bait fished at the depth the shoal is holding rather than on the bottom. It is also the reason larger fish come into harbours at all — a shoal of sand smelt under a wall is a bait shoal, and what it attracts is more interesting than what it is.

Lifecycle and reproduction
Demersal and amphidromous in marine, brackish and fresh water from about 1 m down, and unusually tolerant of salinity: it occupies harbours, coastal lagoons and river mouths across a range running from Madeira and Mauritania to the Black and Caspian Seas. Medium resilience and a short life of about four years.
Not detailed on the FishBase record beyond the age data. What the four-year maximum age and the salinity tolerance establish between them is the pattern: a short-lived, fast-turnover, highly adaptable shoaling fish, which is why it is abundant in exactly the disturbed harbour water most species avoid.
Feeding and senses
Takes zooplankton and small invertebrates from the water column in dense shoals, feeding in the upper water rather than on the bottom. That is the whole of the practical advice for catching one: presentation depth decides it, and a bait on the seabed is in the wrong place entirely.
Shoaling sight-feeding in the upper water, and highly responsive to anything small drifting past. A shoal that has found food competes, which is why a trickle of fine groundbait holds sand smelt under a wall where a single bait does not.
Through the year
Present year-round through the warmer parts of its range, with shoals moving into harbours and lagoons through the warmer months and thinning in winter. At the northern edge of its range it is far more seasonal than it is in Madeira or the Mediterranean.
Distribution
Eastern Atlantic: Portugal and Spain to Nouadhibou in Mauritania and Madeira, and throughout the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Isolated populations on coasts of England and the Netherlands

Why anglers care
Two things at once, and a catalogue that only records the first has recorded half of it. It is a bait fish — the shoal under a harbour wall that brings in whatever is hunting — and it is a light-rock-fishing target in its own right, taken on hooks of size 12 to 16 with a fragment of bait or a one-inch soft plastic fished at the depth the shoal is holding. In Madeira it came to an angler on a drop-shot rig in February, in the same session as a chub mackerel.
Handling and returning
Very small, soft-bodied and easily killed by handling. Wet hands or none, crushed barbs on hooks this size, and return it in the water. A sand smelt in a warm hand for a photograph is a dead sand smelt.
