Safety
Venomous and spined species — Can cause serious injury or death
The short black first dorsal fin carries five to seven venomous grooved spines and there is a further venomous spine on each gill cover. Trodden on, or grasped to unhook, the fish drives them into a foot or hand and injects venom. Pain builds over minutes to an intensity people describe as among the worst they have experienced, radiates up the limb and can last for hours. Spines frequently break off in the wound. Severe systemic and allergic reactions occur, secondary infection is common, and stings to children and older people are more serious.
What reduces it: Do not handle one: cut the trace or unhook with long pliers while the fish is on the ground, never in the hand, and never put one in a bucket or leave one lying on the beach. Wear footwear when wading over sand and shuffle rather than step. IF STUNG, immerse the part in water as hot as can be tolerated without scalding — tested by somebody else, because the pain makes the stung limb a poor judge — for thirty to ninety minutes; the venom is heat-labile and this works. Check for retained spine fragments. Seek medical help for a sting in a child, a large or multiple wound, any breathing or systemic symptoms, a possible retained spine, or a wound that later becomes infected.
Worse when:
- Wading barefoot on clean sand on a falling or low tide in summer, which is where and when almost every sting happens.
- Unhooking by feel in the dark, which is exactly how anglers fishing worm baits for flatfish are stung.
- Handling a small fish on the assumption that a small weever is a harmless one — size has no bearing on the sting.
- A sting to a child, an older person, or anyone with a known severe allergic history.
Precautions that always apply here
- Handle spined and venomous species with the spines controlled. Know which local species have them before you fish, not afterwards.
- If a hook goes past the barb into a person, cut the line, leave the hook where it is, and get medical help. Pulling it back out does far more damage than pushing it through under proper care.
- Carry a charged phone in a waterproof case, or another means of calling for help.
- Keep fingers out of the gills and clear of the teeth. Gill damage is usually fatal to the fish, and several species will remove skin from a finger.
This record exists for one reason: greater weever is the most venomous fish in British and Irish seas, it is caught by accident on surf beaches and inshore boat marks every summer, and an angler who does not recognise one will pick it up.
IT IS NOT A QUARRY SPECIES. Nobody fishes for weever, and FishingHQ does not present it as something to catch. It is here as a hazard and as an identification, in the same way that a page about a live power line is not a page about electricity supply.
THE VENOM IS DELIVERED BY THE BLACK FIRST DORSAL FIN AND BY A SPINE ON EACH GILL COVER. The fish lies buried in clean sand with only its eyes and the tip of that black dorsal exposed, waiting for small fish and crustaceans. Trodden on, or grasped, it drives the spines into the foot or hand and injects venom through grooves in them.
THE PAIN IS SEVERE AND OUT OF ALL PROPORTION TO THE INJURY. It builds over minutes to an intensity people describe as among the worst they have experienced, radiates up the limb, and can last for hours. It is very rarely dangerous in itself, but severe systemic reactions and secondary infection both occur, and a broken-off spine left in the wound is common.
THE TREATMENT IS HOT WATER, and it works. The venom is heat-labile: immersing the affected part in water as hot as can be tolerated without scalding, for thirty to ninety minutes, relieves the pain and denatures the venom. That single fact is the most useful thing on this page.

- A SHORT, BLACK FIRST DORSAL FIN carrying five to seven venomous spines. The black fin is the warning signal and the single most important thing to recognise — it is often the only part visible on a buried fish.
- A venomous spine projecting backwards from each gill cover, which is the one that catches a hand reaching to unhook.

Exceptional: Around 40 cm is the reported maximum. Size has no bearing on the severity of a sting and should not be treated as if it does.
Lifecycle and reproduction
Greater weevers hatch from pelagic eggs and pass through a planktonic larval stage before settling to sandy bottoms and adopting the buried ambush habit. They grow slowly, mature at two to three years and may live for a decade or more. The buried habit is adopted early, so even small juveniles present the same hazard as adults.
A broadcast spawner, releasing pelagic eggs over sandy grounds through summer, with no nest and no parental care. Spawning coincides with the period when the fish are most abundant in shallow inshore water, which is also when bathers and anglers are most likely to encounter them — the seasonal overlap of the sting problem is a consequence of that timing rather than a coincidence.
Feeding and senses
An ambush predator that lies buried in clean sand with only the eyes and the tip of the black dorsal fin exposed, and takes small fish, shrimps and other crustaceans that pass overhead. The upward-facing mouth and high-set eyes are direct adaptations to that posture. Weevers are most active at dusk and at night, when they emerge and hunt more freely over the sand.
Vision upwards, against the light, is the primary sense for an ambush from below, supported by a well-developed lateral line that detects the water movement of prey passing overhead. This is why a weever can hunt effectively at night and in poor visibility, and why burying is not a handicap: the fish does not need to see far, only to detect what crosses directly above it.
Through the year
Weevers move into shallow inshore water in summer and retreat into deeper water in autumn and winter. Almost all stings occur between late spring and early autumn, and the majority on falling and low tides when bathers and anglers are wading over sand that was covered a few hours earlier. Encounters at night are proportionally more common because the fish emerge to hunt.
Distribution
Eastern Atlantic from Norway and the British Isles south to Morocco and Madeira, throughout the Mediterranean and into the Black Sea. Lives on clean sand and muddy sand from the shallow subtidal down to around 150 m, and is common in the shallow inshore water of sandy beaches in summer. The global assessment is Least Concern.

Why anglers care
None as a quarry, and considerable as a hazard. Weevers are taken accidentally on worm and small fish baits fished on clean sand — exactly the fishing that targets dab, plaice and small bass — and they are landed by anglers who are not expecting them and are reaching to unhook by feel. They are also trodden on by waders and bathers on the same beaches. Recognising the black first dorsal fin before touching a small sandy-brown fish is the entire practical content of this record.
Handling and returning
DO NOT HANDLE ONE. If a weever is on the hook, cut the trace and let the fish go, or unhook it with long pliers while it lies on the ground and never in the hand. Do not attempt to hold it, do not grip it to remove a hook, and do not put it in a bucket or a bag where somebody will later reach in. If one is landed on a beach, do not leave it lying on the sand where a bare foot will find it — return it to the water with the rod tip, a landing net or pliers. Wear footwear when wading over sand. If stung, immerse the part in water as hot as can be tolerated without scalding for thirty to ninety minutes, check for broken-off spine fragments, and seek medical help for a sting to a large area, a sting in a child, any breathing or systemic symptoms, or a wound that later becomes infected.
Sandy shallows in summer: where and when people actually get stung
The weever problem is a problem of overlap. The fish wants exactly the ground that people want.
THE HABITAT IS CLEAN SAND. Greater weevers bury in clean sand and muddy sand from the shallow subtidal down to around a hundred and fifty metres. What matters for anyone reading this is the shallow end: in summer they are common in a metre or two of water over the same sandy beaches people swim from and cast onto.
THE SEASON IS LATE SPRING TO EARLY AUTUMN. Weevers move inshore as the sea warms and retreat to deeper water in autumn and winter. Essentially all stings happen in the warm half of the year, and that is not because the venom is seasonal but because the fish and the people are in the same water at the same time.
THE TIDE STATE MATTERS AND IS UNDER-APPRECIATED. Most stings occur on a falling or low tide, when people wade across sand that was deeper water a few hours before and the fish are in the shallowest water they will occupy. Standing in ankle-deep water on a low summer tide on a sandy beach is the highest-risk situation there is, and it is also the single most ordinary thing anyone does at the seaside.
DUSK AND NIGHT INCREASE ENCOUNTERS, because weevers emerge from the sand to hunt and move more freely. A night beach session on clean sand is more likely to produce a weever on the hook than a daytime one.
THE SAME GROUND IS DAB, PLAICE AND BASS GROUND. That is the angling half of the overlap: fishing worm baits on clean sand for flatfish is precisely the fishing that catches weevers by accident, and it is done in the dark by people reaching down to unhook by feel.
FOOTWEAR SOLVES MOST OF THE BATHING PROBLEM and shuffling rather than stepping solves more of it — a weever will move away from disturbance if given the chance, and it stings when it is trodden directly on.
THE LESSER WEEVER SHARES THIS GROUND AND GOES SHALLOWER STILL, right into the surf line. It is smaller and blunter-headed and just as venomous, and every word here applies to it.

Buried, looking up: how a weever hunts, and how big it needs to be to hurt you
The weever's whole anatomy is organised around lying still under sand and waiting.
IT BURIES ITSELF. The fish works down into clean sand until only its eyes and the tip of its short black first dorsal fin are exposed. That is its normal resting state, and it is why a weever is essentially never seen before it is stood on.
THE EYES AND MOUTH FACE UPWARDS. Both are set high on the head and angled up, which is the direct anatomical consequence of an ambush from below. The fish does not need to see far — only to see what passes directly overhead, against the light.
THE LATERAL LINE DOES THE REST. Water movement from a small fish or shrimp passing above is detected without vision at all, which is why weevers hunt effectively at night and in coloured water and why being buried costs them nothing.
THE DIET IS SMALL FISH, SHRIMPS AND OTHER CRUSTACEANS, taken with a fast upward lunge from the sand. Weevers are most active at dusk and through the night, when they emerge and hunt more openly over the bottom.
SIZE: SMALL, AND IT DOES NOT MATTER. Most greater weevers are 15 to 25 centimetres, over 30 is large, and around 40 centimetres is the reported maximum. The lesser weever is smaller again.
BUT SIZE HAS NO BEARING ON THE STING. This is the most dangerous misconception about the species and it deserves stating flatly: a small weever envenomates exactly as effectively as a large one. The spines are proportionally long, they are grooved, and the venom glands run their length. A fifteen-centimetre fish that looks harmless enough to pick up will put somebody on the ground.
AND THE BLACK FIN IS THE ONLY RECOGNITION YOU NEED. A small sandy-brown fish with oblique flank markings and a SHORT BLACK FIRST DORSAL FIN is a weever. Do not pick it up. Everything else on this page is detail; that sentence is the content.

If you are stung: hot water, and what else to check
The treatment for a weever sting is simple, it is well established, and a great many people do not know it.
HOT WATER. Immerse the stung part in water as hot as can be tolerated WITHOUT SCALDING — hot bath temperature, tested by somebody else's hand or with a thermometer, never judged by the stung limb itself because the pain makes that judgement unreliable — and keep it there for thirty to ninety minutes, topping the water up as it cools. The venom is heat-labile: heat denatures it, and the pain relief is usually rapid and substantial. This is the treatment, not a folk remedy.
WHY THE TEMPERATURE WARNING MATTERS. A person in severe pain will hold a limb in water hot enough to burn and not notice. Scald injuries from weever first aid are a recognised problem. Have somebody else test the water.
WHAT THE PAIN IS LIKE. It builds over minutes rather than arriving at full strength, radiates up the limb, and reaches an intensity people routinely describe as among the worst they have experienced. Swelling, redness and numbness around the site are usual. It commonly persists for hours and tenderness can last for days.
CHECK FOR BROKEN SPINE FRAGMENTS. Weever spines break off in the wound reasonably often. A retained fragment keeps the wound painful, keeps venom in the tissue and seeds infection, and it needs removing — which usually means medical attention rather than a penknife on the beach.
SEEK MEDICAL HELP IF: the sting is to a child or an older person; the wound is large, or there are multiple punctures; there is any difficulty breathing, chest pain, faintness, widespread rash or swelling away from the site, which suggest a systemic or allergic reaction; a spine fragment may be retained; or the wound becomes red, swollen, hot or increasingly painful over the following days, which suggests infection. Tetanus status is worth checking as for any puncture wound.
WHAT NOT TO DO: do not use ice or cold water, which does nothing useful and may worsen the pain; do not cut the wound, suck it, or apply a tourniquet; do not use urine or vinegar, neither of which has any role here.
AND THE PREVENTION IS ORDINARY. Wear footwear when wading over sand. Shuffle rather than step. Never pick up a small sandy fish with a black first dorsal fin, never put one in a bucket, and never leave a landed one lying on the beach where a bare foot will find it — return it with pliers, a net or the rod tip.
