A fish the length of a finger that buries itself in warm shallow sand with a venomous black dorsal fin showing, and puts more people into British emergency departments each summer than every other marine animal here combined.

Five to seven grooved venom spines in a jet-black first dorsal fin, plus a spine on each gill cover. The fish lies buried in shallow sand and is stood on, or is picked up out of a net or bait tray. The result is immediate severe burning pain, frequently lasting many hours, with marked swelling of the foot or hand. Serious systemic reactions are rare and do occur, and spines can break off in the wound.

What reduces it: Shuffle rather than stride in shallow sandy water; wear beach shoes or boots, accepting that thin ones can be penetrated. Never pick up a small sandy fish with a black dorsal fin, alive or dead. Unhook with long forceps with the fish on the ground, or cut the trace. If stung, immerse in water as hot as can be tolerated without scalding for thirty to ninety minutes, and seek medical help for anything beyond local pain, for children, or if a spine may be retained.

Worse when:

  • Warm summer days around low water on gently shelving sandy beaches
  • Bare feet, and thin wetsuit boots which spines can penetrate
  • Bait trays, shrimp nets and landing nets, where a dead weever is as dangerous as a live one

FishingHQ already held the greater weever and described weever envenomation on it. That was the wrong fish for the job. The greater weever lives in deeper water and reaches people on a hook; the stings that ruin British beach holidays come almost entirely from this species, which lies buried in a few inches of warm sand where children are standing.

IT IS SMALL, AND THAT IS THE PROBLEM. A lesser weever is usually under twelve centimetres. It has upward-facing eyes, an oblique upturned mouth, and it wriggles backwards into clean sand until only the eyes and the first dorsal fin are exposed. That first dorsal fin is jet black — a warning colour — and carries five to seven grooved spines with venom glands at their base. There is a further spine on each gill cover.

THE STING IS DISPROPORTIONATE TO THE ANIMAL. Severe, immediate, burning pain that builds over the first hour or two and can persist for many hours, often with swelling of the whole foot or hand. It is very rarely dangerous in itself; it is memorably horrible, and the standard first aid is hot water, because the venom is heat-labile.

AND ANGLERS GET IT FROM A DIFFERENT DIRECTION. Bathers are stung by standing on a buried fish. Anglers and bait diggers are stung by handling one that has come up in a net, on a hook or in a bait tray — often without recognising what they have picked up.

  • A JET-BLACK FIRST DORSAL FIN, short and triangular, carrying five to seven spines. On a small sandy-coloured fish this is unmistakable and it is a warning: those spines are the venom apparatus.
  • SMALL — usually under 12 cm and rarely over 15. The greater weever reaches 40 cm and lives deeper.
  • EYES ON TOP OF THE HEAD and a strongly oblique, upturned mouth: the anatomy of a fish that lies buried looking upwards.
  • A SPINE ON EACH GILL COVER, pointing backwards, which is the one people forget when they pick a fish up carefully by the head.
  • SANDY BROWN ABOVE AND PALE BELOW, with no obvious markings other than the black fin. It is designed to be invisible against clean sand and it succeeds.
  • THE GREATER WEEVER is longer, more elongate, has oblique dark bars on the flanks and yellow markings, and is a deeper-water fish. Both are venomous; only one of them is under your foot.

Lifecycle and reproduction

A short-lived small fish, maturing within two to three years and living perhaps five. Spawning occurs in summer with pelagic eggs and larvae; juveniles settle to clean sand at small size and live the rest of their lives associated with it. Numbers inshore are strongly seasonal, and the species is abundant on sandy ground around southern and western Britain and Ireland through summer. It is a fish nobody manages, nobody assesses and almost nobody sees alive, which is unusual for an animal with this much public impact.

Summer spawning over sandy ground, with eggs and larvae in the plankton. There is no nest, no care, and no migration. The relevant seasonal fact for a reader is not the spawning but the consequence: weevers are inshore in numbers exactly when people are in warm shallow water, and the coincidence of the two is the whole of the public-health story.

Feeding and senses

An ambush predator. Buried in sand with only the eyes and the black fin exposed, it waits for small shrimps, mysids, small fish and other invertebrates to pass overhead and takes them with a very fast upward strike. It does not hunt and it does not chase. This is why standing on one is the commonest way to meet it: the fish's entire strategy is to remain where it is and be invisible, and it will not move out of the way of a foot.

Vision, directed upward, is the hunting sense — eyes set on top of the head watching the water above a buried body. The lateral line detects the movement of prey close by. Neither is any use for detecting a person, and the fish does not treat a human as a predator to flee from; the sting is a defence used at contact rather than an attack.

Through the year

Inshore on shallow sand from late spring through to early autumn, and in deeper water over winter. The stings are therefore a summer phenomenon almost exclusively, concentrated on warm days around low water on gently shelving sandy beaches.

Distribution

Eastern Atlantic from the North Sea and southern Scandinavia to West Africa, and into the Mediterranean, on clean sand from the shallow subtidal down to around fifty metres. Abundant on sandy beaches around southern and western Britain and Ireland in summer.

Why anglers care

Not quarry in any sense. It appears in this catalogue for three reasons: it is caught constantly by accident on small baits over clean sand, it turns up alive in shrimp nets and bait trays, and it is the single most likely cause of an envenomation on a British beach. An angler who can recognise the black dorsal fin will not pick one up bare-handed, and a bait digger or shrimper who knows they are there will shuffle rather than stride.

Handling and returning

Do not handle a live lesser weever. If one comes up on a hook, cut the trace or unhook it with long forceps while it is on the ground, and never hold it — including by the head, because there is a spine on each gill cover. Spines can penetrate a wetsuit boot and a thin glove. A dead weever is still dangerous; the venom apparatus does not stop working because the fish has, and stings from fish in bait trays and landing nets are common. If a fish must be moved, move it with a tool.

What a weever sting does, and the first aid that is actually agreed

THE SYMPTOMS. Immediate, intense, burning pain out of all proportion to a puncture from a fish that could sit in your palm. Pain typically peaks within the first half-hour to two hours and can persist for many hours; the foot or hand commonly swells, sometimes considerably, and numbness, redness and itching may follow and can last for days. Spines occasionally break off in the wound.

THE FIRST AID IS HOT WATER, AND IT IS UNUSUALLY WELL AGREED. The venom is heat-labile, and immersing the affected part in water as hot as can be tolerated without scalding — commonly given as around 40–45°C — for thirty to ninety minutes, topping it up as it cools, gives substantial relief in most cases. This is the same principle used for other fish envenomations and it is one of the few first-aid measures in this catalogue with genuine consensus behind it.

CHECK FOR A RETAINED SPINE, and get the wound looked at if the pain does not settle, if swelling spreads, if there are signs of infection, or if the person is a child, elderly, or has any reaction beyond the local one. Marine puncture wounds become infected readily.

FISHINGHQ IS NOT YOUR DOCTOR. WHAT PREVENTS IT. Beach shoes or wetsuit boots — though spines can penetrate thin ones. Shuffling rather than striding in shallow sandy water, which pushes a buried fish away instead of standing on it. And for anglers, the recognition that a small sandy fish with a black dorsal fin in the bottom of a net is not to be picked up.

Why the catalogue had this on the wrong fish

FishingHQ described weever envenomation on the greater weever record, and the greater weever is not the fish doing it.

GREATER WEEVER — up to about 40 cm, elongate, barred and yellow-marked, and living from around ten metres down to over a hundred on sand and mud. Anglers and trawlers meet it. Bathers do not.

LESSER WEEVER — under 15 cm, unmarked except for the black fin, and buried in clean sand from the low water mark down to a few tens of metres. This is the animal that people stand on.

BOTH ARE VENOMOUS and the venom and first aid are effectively the same. The distinction is entirely about who encounters which, and it decides who the page is for: a boat angler unhooking a fish, or a parent at a beach in August.

HOW THIS WAS FOUND, AND WHY IT IS WORTH RECORDING. Not by anybody reading the greater weever page, which is accurate about the greater weever. It came out of a species-level checklist of British quarry written from outside the catalogue, which asked what a British-complete platform needs and answered 'the weever that stings people'. Documenting a hazard on the wrong member of a family is a failure no internal audit can see, because nothing internal knows the family has another member.
