A wide-mouthed, spiny, superbly camouflaged ambush predator that sits in British rock pools looking like a stone — the largest fish most light-tackle anglers catch on a bad day, and the one they should not grab.
Safety
Injury while handling fish — Can cause injury needing treatment
A long sharp spine on each gill cover, plus a spiny first dorsal and bony ridges on the head. They are not venomous and they go into a palm readily, and marine puncture wounds infect easily and heal slowly. The fish holds position rather than fleeing, which is exactly why people put a hand on one.
What reduces it: Do not close a hand around it. Unhook with forceps over the water, use a net, and hold across the back behind the head if it must be held at all. Clean and dress any puncture properly and seek advice if it inflames.
Worse when:
- Reaching into a pool or under weed by feel
- Sorting a catch by torchlight
- Handling with cold wet hands, which grip badly
Fish welfare — Can cause injury needing treatment
A small site-attached fish caught on a hook proportionally large for it, frequently by somebody learning. Air exposure, dry surfaces and finger unhooking all cost more on a fish this size than on a larger one, and a fish returned to a different pool has been displaced.
What reduces it: Wet hands, forceps, barbless or crushed barbs, and unhook over water. Return it where it came from and replace any stone you turned.
Worse when:

If a shanny is the fish under the rock, the sea scorpion is the fish that was already looking at you.
IT IS AN AMBUSH PREDATOR AND IT IS BUILT LIKE ONE. A huge head, an enormous mouth relative to the body, a tapering body, and a colour and texture that make it effectively invisible against weed and rock. It sits still and waits, and it will take prey almost as large as itself.
THE SPINES ARE WHY IT NEEDS A RECORD. A long, sharp spine on each gill cover — the character in the name — plus a spiny first dorsal fin and bony ridges on the head. They are not venomous. They are entirely capable of driving into a hand, and marine puncture wounds infect readily and heal slowly.
THE CHARACTER THAT SEPARATES IT FROM ITS RELATIVE IS THE SPINE LENGTH. The long-spined sea scorpion's preopercular spine reaches back past the rear edge of the gill cover; the short-spined sea scorpion's does not. There is also a small barbel at the corner of the mouth on the long-spined, and it is the commoner of the two in shallow water.
AND IT IS THE FISH LIGHT ROCK FISHING CATCHES WHEN NOTHING ELSE IS HAPPENING. Willing, aggressive, abundant on the right ground, and interesting to look at — which makes it a mainstay of the discipline and one of the fish a species hunter is most reliably going to meet.

- A LONG SPINE ON EACH GILL COVER reaching back BEYOND the rear edge of the gill cover. This is the name and the character; on the short-spined sea scorpion the spine stops short of it.
- A SMALL BARBEL AT THE CORNER OF THE MOUTH, present on the long-spined and absent on the short-spined.
- A HEAD THAT IS A THIRD OF THE FISH, with a very wide mouth and bony ridges and spines over the top of it.
- SUPERB CAMOUFLAGE — mottled brown, green, red or cream depending entirely on the ground, with flaps and irregular outlines. Colour is worthless as a character.
- SCALELESS BODY tapering sharply from the head, with a spiny first dorsal fin.
- SITTING STILL ON THE BOTTOM of a pool or gully rather than swimming. A fish that does not move as you approach in British water is very likely this.

Lifecycle and reproduction
Matures within a year or two and lives around five. Eggs are laid in a mass among weed or in a crevice in late winter and spring and are guarded by the male until they hatch; larvae are planktonic before settling to the shore. Growth is rapid early and slows sharply, and the fish is strongly site-attached, holding the same patch of ground for long periods — which is the same practical point as the shanny's homing: a fish moved is a fish displaced.
Spawning is in late winter and spring, with eggs deposited in a mass among algae or under a stone and guarded by the male. Because the eggs are attached to shore ground rather than shed into the water column, the population depends on the physical structure of a particular stretch of shore in a way a broadcast spawner's does not.
Feeding and senses
A sit-and-wait ambush predator that takes prey with a very fast suction strike, expanding the enormous buccal cavity to pull it in. Diet is small crustaceans — shrimps, prawns, amphipods and small crabs — plus small fish, including fish surprisingly large relative to the predator. It does not pursue and it does not forage; the whole strategy is being invisible and waiting, which is why it is caught on a small bait or lure dropped near it rather than by covering water.
Vision for the strike, with eyes set high on the head looking upward and forward, and a well-developed lateral line for detecting prey close by in poor light and turbid water. As with any ambush predator that relies on camouflage, there is no flight response to an approaching person worth the name — which is exactly why people put a hand on one.
Through the year
Present on the same ground year-round, moving into slightly deeper water in winter and up into pools and the shallow subtidal in the warmer months. Males are on eggs in late winter and spring.
Distribution
North-east Atlantic from Iceland and Norway to Portugal, including the whole of Britain and Ireland, on rocky and weedy ground from rock pools and the intertidal down to around thirty metres. Common and widespread wherever there is weed and hard ground.

Why anglers care
A mainstay of British light rock fishing and species hunting and a regular incidental capture for anybody fishing small baits over rough ground. It is not eaten and there is no fishery for it. Its significance is that it is abundant, willing, distinctive, and the mini-species capture most likely to injure the person holding it — which is why it needs a record rather than a mention inside a broader one.
Handling and returning
Do not close a hand around it. The gill-cover spines and the spiny dorsal go into a palm easily, and the wound is a marine puncture, which infects readily and heals slowly.
Hold it across the back behind the head, or better, do not hold it at all: unhook it with forceps over the water and let it go. Wet hands if it must be handled. A landing net makes all of this easier and is worth carrying for fish this size for exactly that reason.
THE SPINES ARE NOT VENOMOUS. This is not a weever, a scorpionfish or a stonefish, and the pain is mechanical rather than chemical. It still puts people in a minor injuries unit, and any puncture that inflames should be seen.
Return it to where it came from — it is site-attached — and replace any stone you turned.
Sea scorpion, weever, scorpionfish and stonefish: four spined fish and one difference that matters
The word scorpion appears on four quite different animals in this catalogue, and the difference between them is whether the spines carry venom.
LONG-SPINED SEA SCORPION — British, abundant, spined, NOT venomous. The spines go into a hand and hurt mechanically. Any puncture in seawater can infect, which is a real risk and a different one.
LESSER WEEVER — British, buried in shallow sand, VENOMOUS. Small, sandy, with a jet-black first dorsal fin. This is the one that stings bathers, and the first aid is hot water immersion.
RED SCORPIONFISH — Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic, sits on rock, VENOMOUS. Large-headed, mottled, with fleshy tabs, and one of the commonest envenomations among people who catch fish in the Mediterranean.
STONEFISH — Indo-Pacific and Red Sea, buried on shallow bottom, EXTREMELY VENOMOUS. The most dangerous of the group by a wide margin.
THE PRACTICAL RULE THAT COVERS ALL FOUR: do not close a hand around any spined fish, and identify it before handling rather than after. That is a habit rather than a piece of knowledge, and it is the one worth teaching first.
AND WHY THE DISTINCTION IS NOT ACADEMIC. A person who has learned that a British sea scorpion is harmless enough to grab has learned a habit that will hurt them in the Mediterranean and could put them in hospital in the Red Sea. The habit should be the same everywhere and it should be formed on the harmless one.

The camouflage, the mouth, and why it lets you get close
A sea scorpion is a small demonstration of the same strategy the scorpionfish uses in the Mediterranean, and the mechanics are worth understanding because they explain the fishing as well as the risk.
THE CAMOUFLAGE IS ACTIVE AND IT IS GOOD. Colour and pattern change to match the ground over hours to days — a fish from red weed is red, one from a gravel gully is grey-brown — and the outline is broken by flaps and irregular margins. Divers and rock poolers routinely fail to see one at arm's length.
THE MOUTH IS THE WEAPON. An enormous buccal cavity expands very fast, and the pressure drop pulls prey in from a short distance. Fish that hunt this way do not need to be fast; they need to be close and unnoticed, which is why a sea scorpion will take prey nearly as large as itself.
THERE IS NO FLIGHT RESPONSE WORTH THE NAME. The entire strategy is not being seen, so the fish holds position while a hand approaches — which is exactly the behaviour that puts a spine in a palm.
AND IT IS WHY THE FISHING WORKS THE WAY IT DOES. A small soft plastic or a scrap of bait dropped and worked slowly near the bottom, close to weed and rock, will be taken. Retrieving quickly across open ground will not: a sit-and-wait predator does not chase.
WHICH GIVES A GENERAL LESSON WORTH MORE THAN THE FISH. The way an animal makes its living decides how it is caught, and a great deal of angling advice that looks like technique is actually a description of a feeding strategy. A sea scorpion in a British rock pool teaches the same thing as a scorpionfish in the Mediterranean and a stonefish in the Red Sea, at no risk.
